Yea and you used the Tatis for Shields trade as an example of trading a small piece for a stopgap.

NO ONE is suggesting bringing in 2016 James Shields.

Well, of course no one is suggesting trading for a pitcher who will perform badly in exchange for a prospect who will far outrstrip expectations.

    That's the beauty of hindsight.

What is being advocated is prospects for "stopgap" pitchers.

I'm pointing out the downside in that.

    Why not?

At some point you have to identify which ones are worth keeping and discard the rest.  You can't give them all at bats indefinitely.

As some point you have to be willing to risk losing a trade.

For the record I'm not strongly advocating to make a move at this point.  Obviously I'd much rather promote players than bring in outside guys.  But as a matter of practice, you can't be scared to trade a fringe guy because he might pan out.

Obviously, I'm not advocating never making trades or never trading prospects.

Let's keep these things in context.

I'm specifically criticizing the idea of the Orioles right now trading a prospect for a stopgap pitcher.

It depends on the player.  Do they help the younger players?  Are they signed for an additional year?  A stop gap is someone not here long term.  To me, that could be someone signed through next year.

There are plenty of situations out there  where making moves to make the team better now is absolutely the right thing to do.

Don’t worry, I’m sure if Elias did just this, you would praise him for it.

No, rest assured, if Elias starts trading prospects for stopgaps I'll criticize him for it.

Obviously one example is a reason not make trades.

Obviously, the history of baseball is littered with far more than one example where a "small piece" or an "insignificant" prospect far overachieved their prospect status.

It's why trading prospects for stopgaps to get that magical 64th win is a stupid, moronic, very idiotic proposition.  Am I doing it right?

  5. Bullpen was great last night.  Had a real 2012 vibe to it.

Going forward, we'll see.  I believe I started a thread, or participated in one last year, around the end of April and I was effusive in my praise for them.

They immediately wilted under the pressure of having to carry an awful starting staff.

So far though there's a lot to like.

BTW, there was speculation about Tate after his last appearance and that should be put to bed now.  His velo was fine last night.

Yeah, but he should know who’s out there.   By the way, I wouldn’t say it wasn’t even close.   It was close, but he clearly was out.  Nice throw and nice catch and tag.

    It was definitely close.

Great throw and probably better tag were the only reason he was out.

However, you can't make an out there.

Hyde says "You see a lot of teams doing that now." Some day, I'd like to hear about a strategy or idea that the Orioles had before other teams.  Something that would give them a competitive advantage, rather than just prevent them from falling further behind.

That would kinda be the thing they would keep proprietary, no?

Or the fact that it's been four games.

He's been fine, all you could reasonably expect.  Not sure if he's going to hold up for 100 games.

Let's hope we only need about half that.

  9. Wow.  What a breathe of fresh air this guy has been.

Praising a man by criticizing another is the poorest compliment possible, but when he broke down and blocked a breaking ball in the dirt, even without any baserunners the other day, I had to smile and think about his predecessor.  He's also been active with the pitchers and clearly communicative and engaged.  Likewise, a welcome difference.

I always liked him in Texas.  I realize he's 38 years old, but for what is hopefully his role- ~45 games behind the plate- he should help this team.

  10. I don't know if I would go that far.

The broadcast guys did comment on it, and even said they were surprised there wasn't a mound visit.

It's worth following, though there was also talk that Tate had looked to sacrifice velocity to gain movement in winter work.

    Let's hope it's that.

I do think it's stupid to start him at Bowie.

Why not give him innings with the ML ball and against a higher level of competition?

What's he going to learn in a return to AA?

I mean... you're talking about probably a handful of appearances at most.

He's going to pitch again for the first time in a year.  That's what he's going to "learn."
