I have often thought about a 30 second walk up music from the classical repertoire: you can always go with the Shostakovich, the climax of Beethoven nine of the last movement of Beetnveon 5, the last 45 seconds or so of the finale of Roman festivals by respighi, O Fortuna from Carmine Burana of course, for something offbeat, the last of the four sea interludes from Peter Grimes?

Meanwhile, the guys in Norfolk have just cranked four home runs, so maybe we should use whatever they’re using?

I love how this site occasionally becomes a music appreciation discussion.  I grew up on fantasy movies so I'm going with Orff's O Fortuna.  Bit of a cliche I guess but I don't know the classics like you guys do.

Boy is THIS an underwhelming effort tonight...just putrid...and its not an aberration...in virtually EVERY game this season we dont get untracked till late...not a good recipe for winning baseball...

With the exception of Mullins I'm not really concerned about the hitting.  It's cold and wet and early in the season.  And even Mullins I think will find his stroke again, though it may take awhile.  The pitching is more concerning until we add two or three more guys -- either back from the IL, in a trade or up from the minors.

I don’t think Kemp is long for this team except if Elias makes a trade. There are too many players in the organization who are better. Ideally I want to see Mateo as the super sub fit infield and outfield.

Mateo and Kemp are redundant with Mateo being the more useful roster piece.

The only reason Kemp is on the team is because he is a lefty hitting middle infielder, and the team does not want to promote Holliday quite yet.  Kemp is gone when Holliday is up.  The Westburg/Urias/Mateo shuffle is a separate matter imo.

Are there more people watching this thread than are at the game?! I can hear watches ticking in the stands.

Probably because bad weather is on the way -- and Cole Irvin is pitching.

Cowser seems like a guy who is going to need consistent ABs to have success.  Not sure this team as currently constructed can provide that for him.

If Hays or Mullins don't start hitting Cowser will surely get an opportunity to start.

Or it might have been two players. It's not as if teams were overwhelming the O's with offers for Ortiz.

I'm just speculating, but I'm guessing that Milwaukee held firm on, more or less, a Top 100 Major League ready prospect to go along with Hall.  And I'm guessing they preferred an infielder as well.  If so Ortiz or Westburg fit the bill.

Understood. But if Ortiz got us Burnes, pretty sure something else could have gotten us Burnes

You mean someone of lesser value?  Doubt it.  I'm guessing Westburg or Kjerstad if not Ortiz.

I was really hoping that Urias/Mateo would be gone and Ortiz/Holliday would have replaced them.

Ortiz got us Burnes.  And he isn't doing anything in Milwaukee yet either.

  11. I don't think I'll be able to see them in Anaheim in April but I will try to see them play in Dodger Stadium in August.  I saw them beat the Padres in SD last season, which was great.  Lots of O's fans.

Holliday needs to take Westburg's spot.  Westburg needs to take over Urias's job.  Holliday won't be promoted to sit on the bench.  I guess Urias has to be traded or Westburg demoted for Holliday to get promoted.

In terms of the roster I think Holliday would take Kemp's spot over the others because both are left-handed hitting infielders.  Obviously Holliday would start over the others too, but the others are righties and have other skills, such as Westburg and Urias both being able to play third and Mateo having great speed.  Maybe Mateo gets traded or let go before Kemp but I highly doubt it.

A Norby-Cowser platoon in LF might be the way to go.   Would hit for more power than Hays, worse in the field. Hays is what he is at this point and flipping him for BP/Pitching would be unpopular but make sense.

Holiday replaces Kemp when he is deemed ready.

Bottom line is the roster is too good to carry marginal players.  Would feel completely differently if Elias were acquiring vets that are difference makers vs replacement level good vibe guys.

I forgot Holiday's spot is currently occupied by Kemp (and not Mateo or Urias), as both are left hitting infielders.  It's hard to believe Kemp is on the team over Holiday, but clearly the FO wants Holiday to spend more time at second base for a little while longer.

Not sure the FO believes Norby has the glove to replace Hays.  Not sure they believe he is a starting outfielder.  But Hays does appear to be the most vulnerable starting player on the team right now, at least until he gets hot with the bat again, assuming he does.

  14. This team can't afford to carry all of Mateo, Urias and Westburg much longer.  They all overlap too much, especially as right-handed hitters with limited power and OBP potential.  Westburg should be the best hitter of the three but really so far has yet to show he's better than Urias.  Two of these guys need to make room for Holiday and Mayo pretty soon -- that is unless Mayo goes to the outfield or some other player gets moved, like O'Hearn.

Wish Cowser would get some more at bats

Ding ding ding!  Cowser comment finally appeared.  Won't see many Cowser appearances against a lefty until he proves he can handle them better, but now that Detmers is out I wouldn't be surprised to see him sub for someone in the outfield.
