They have Kjerstad at DH and Santander in RF. Is Santander better defensively?
It doesn't appear the powers that be think that Kjerstad is ready to play in the field at the MLB level yet. Not really a problem while Mountcastle is out but could be a problem soon enough.

Yes! Way to keep it under control. HBP on a 1-2 count was pretty bad, but Flaherty escapes without allowing a run.
Is that Sidney Ponson as your avatar? Unexpected!

Hyde said before the game Flaherty has.
Really? Thanks for the news.

Gibson wasn't terrible but as usual his pitch count stunk.
This bullpen is fried. Really needed more from Gibson. We might see Flaherty tonight.
That's the drawback from having a 6 man rotation -- too many starters not enough relievers. I really don't get it. One of the current starters should go in the pen, preferably Gibson or Flaherty.

Yup. He should only be a pinch runner, occasionally a defensive replacement for a Frazier type or rarely starter for injuries or a very rare off day. Otherwise stay on the bench and be ready to run like the other night.
I figured he'd only start against the occasional left handed pitcher but Hyde must have seen something in the matchup he liked -- unless maybe Westburg is hobbling a bit, dunno.

For the last 10 games? He's not on the 40-man and can't play in the playoffs and it's likely he'd hit about as well as Mateo this year at the MLB level.
I knew either you or CoC would have some infuriating yet correct reason for this major injustice.

Mateo may never hit another HR
He's more likely to steal home from second base.

I like Mateo but don't see why he's starting. Jackson Holliday needs to get called up soon.

it's unbelievable at how whenever we score multiple runs...at the other end of our innings they score too...
It's very easy to believe when your starter has a 5 ERA and he's facing the Houston Astros.

People are piling on Gibson but what do you expect when Houston has had the second best team OPS since the All-Star break -- behind only the Braves? The Astros just mash -- even on guys better than Gibby.

Insurance paid most of the Belle contract.
No doubt but insurance costs money too -- I'm assuming it costs more the more expensive your players are.

Why is the Angelos family so cheap?
Paying Albert Belle and Chris Davis lots and lots of money is part of the reason.

I never understood why the Astros were taken from the NL to the AL and the Brewers were taken from the AL to the NL??
Milwaukee was an NL town when the Braves used to be there, and there was some desire to make it an NL town again I'm thinking partly so they'd play the Cubs and Cards on a regular basis. The only guess I can make about the Astros moving to the AL was to create an intrastate rivalry with the Rangers.

This was like the Lenn Sakata at catcher game, with Roenicke at third and Lowenstein at second. Tippy threw it to Eddie Murray because it was the only guy he recognized in the infield. Three straight pickoffs.
Cano recognized Rutschman and just threw three straight to him. Keep it simple. Big win!
Maybe not as wild as that game, which arguably had the craziest half inning ever -- but I was thinking of that game earlier too.

Mike Baumann is 10-1 lol. This team is crazy.

I think we took Fuji and Lopez and Webb because they throw hard and something about their spin rates and shape of their pitches we like. Lopez is back because of the power sinker. They like them in one inning spurts which makes me wonder why we force Lopez over and over to go two innings.
Yes, I agree, and despite the success there wasn't enough depth with Tate and Givens on the IL and DL Hall having to work on his arm strength. It's been a weird and rocky year for Orioles pitching, even though it's mostly been pretty good -- and way better than in recent years past.

I understand the frustration with the wild pitches, but Fuji had some bad luck there and has been pitching pretty well recently. He gave up a triple that is probably an out in 29/30 ballparks (not sure about Fenway), a hard-hit grounder (97mph) that was booted by Westburg, and a ground ball single through a drawn-in infield that wasn’t hit that hard. That same sequence could have been a 3 up 3 down at OPACY.
Enron Field err… Minute Maid Park is a unique ballpark that produces some weird results.Yes good point

The O's bullpen has the second best ERA in the league -- so we're getting way carried away with the idea of our bullpen being not good. These are the Houston Astros after all.
But it does beg the question -- if our bullpen is so good, then why are we picking up guys castoffs like Fuji, Lopez and Webb?
I guess we have something resembling a shutdown bullpen if it's Coulombe, Cano and Bautista 7,8 and 9. Anything other than that -- even though Perez has been much better lately -- I think it's more of a coinflip.

Hyde not pushing the right buttons on this game. Means had 86 pitches, he could've gone 1 more inning!
That's been the MO all year. I'd understand it better if we had a shutdown bullpen but we don't.

If you can’t sign Frazier for 2-3M, so be it. I’m sure you can find another 0 WAR player for that money.
He has a BWAR of 1.7 -- 12th highest on the team.

Big game for Grayson today. We need someone to restore order after last night’s chaos. 6 quality innings would be much appreciated.
Ho hum. I didn't see the game, but looking at the box score it looks like he wasn't too bad and was unlucky due to an error. Did he deserve to get taken out so early or did Hyde maybe go to the bullpen too early (as he does sometimes in my opinion)?

Speaking of old rock stars the Rolling Stones released a new song today called "Anger". The song is ok but the music video is fantastic.

The Tyler Wells story.

It likely wouldn't be this way if Givens and Tate hadn't been hurt all year and DL Hall also hadn't regressed the first part of the year.
If your criticism is that Elias should have done a bigger trade before the deadline to get a difference making reliever (maybe two of them), then many of us agree with you. I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt when he got Fuji and Flaherty, but they haven't exactly worked out. And Wells does not appear to be back in form yet, so no dice there. And then of course the team loses Bautista, causing more stress on the pen. But Elias must have thought the David Robertson type pitchers were too expensive prospect-wise to strike a deal for any of them.
The good news is that Flaherty could end up being successful in the bullpen, Means looks like he can start on a regular basis, which also means Irvin would likely remain in the pen (I'm guessing anyway). Fujinami probably should no longer be used in close game situations.
I'm hoping in the playoffs the starters are allowed to go a little deeper, at least when they are having a good game or have a decent lead.
