I have to say, I feel much better about our loss knowing that all four 99+ win teams lost.  I’ll definitely be rooting for Texas and Arizona in the next round.

Texas against Arizona sounds like a bowl game not the World Series, but it is a bit hard not to pull for those two teams.  My mid-Atlantic loyalties kind of have me pulling for Philly, and I like their home stadium atmosphere.

  2. The Brewers, Dodgers and Orioles had the three best post-All Star Break team ERAs -- yet they all got hit hard in the playoffs.

And of the three teams only the Orioles had a game where their offense scored more than 3 runs.  The Rays and Blue Jays each only scored 1 run over 2 games.

Don't know if you can blame the playoff format, but I hated the extended format as soon as it was announced.

Intellectually, I completely understand that the playoffs are a bit of a crapshoot.  That said, if we exactly replicated this year and got swept in the postseason again, I don’t think I’d feel satisfied. I’d be far more bummed out than I was this year.

Agreed, the O's will at least have to make it to the ALCS for next year to be a "success".  I don't even care of they win the division as long as they get back to the playoffs.

IMO we should certainly be looking to upgrade over O’Hearn. 2023 was the best that he will most likely ever be. And still in time of the season, he gave us next to nothing.

Mayo or Kjerstad could be the upgrade over O'Hearn, though I'm not sure what the timeline for Mayo is thought to be.  O'Hearn could be a good trade candidate, though because he's cheap and had a good 2023 I think it's probably he'll be on the OD roster.  As much as this team needs a big name bat I have no doubt Elias, whether he goes for a big name or not, will be looking for another Ryan O'Hearn or another Aaron Hicks.

    - Need at least 1 more TOR arm

    - Need at least 1 900+ OPS bat via trade or FA (even a JD Martinez type)

    - Add a closer fill in for 2024

    - Trade Hays for pitching prospects (no one in minors outside of Povich)

    - Replace Frazier with Ortiz

    - Find spots for Kjerstaad and Holliday on OD roster

Sounds about right though I'd argue we need more than one new arm in the rotation.  We don't know how many innings Means will give us, Grayson may hit some more bumps, for now Kremer looks like a #5, Wells is probably better as a reliever/spot starter -- plus we need to replace Gibson and Flaherty.

I agree we need a big new FA bat, and it should be an outfield bat.  Hicks is likely gone, Santander/Hays could get traded, and fingers crossed Mullins will start hitting again.  Of the young guys only Kjerstad has shown his bat is ready for the majors right now, but is he an outfielder?  We don't need any more 1B/DH types (unless maybe Mountcastle or O'Hearn is traded -- though that seems a bit unlikely).

Sure. And... you never know what mediocre pitcher (seriously, Andrew Heaney, Dane Dunning?) is going to beat you on any given day in October.

Until Sunday the O's had not hit well for a few weeks -- and honestly they were never one of the top hitting teams all year -- except in clutch situations.  The prodigious bats coming up from the minors should be hitting the Andrew Heaneys and Dane Dunnings of the world harder next year and beyond.  We'll see next season what Holliday and the others coming up will be giving us.

The 1971 Orioles won 101 games in the regular season, had four 20-game winners on its staff, and still didn’t win the World Series.   So, you just never know what it will take.   One thing for sure, it requires a team to be playing its best baseball at the exact right time.

Well, no one will ever have four 20 game winners again, but I do think the O's need both more talent and more experience in the rotation to give them a better shot in the postseason.  Yamamoto has no MLB experience, but look at his numbers from Japan and it's clear he's a beast -- and he's only 25.  I'm scared the Yankees, Red Sox or Blue Jays will get him.  Somebody like Snell or one of the other free agents brings experience and talent.

Free agents are always a risk, but we are not a pitching factory like the Rays or Dodgers.  Not getting any good free agent pitchers is a risk.  Of course a trade or two could be made, though trade partners will want some bats -- probably Kjerstad, Mayo, Cowser, Ortiz, etc -- we don't want to trade.

  8. Go get Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Blake Snell -- seriously!  I know I'm probably dreaming, but what more proof does a 101 win team need, after flaming out in the post season, that top pitchers are needed to get this team a World Series?

We're pretty sure we got a lot of great bats coming up from the minors.  Pitching?  Hopefully but not quite as sure.  I say go as big as possible in trying to get one to two top free agent starters and a free agent reliever -- or get them via a trade.  If not Yamamoto or Snell then get an Eduardo Rodriguez, Jordan Montgomery or Aaron Nola or...  Pitching, pitching, pitching!

You never know who could regress or get hurt.

I don’t think they need to overhaul the pitching staff totally but they have the prospects to land one legit guy. They should absolutely do that.

Maybe but they need to get used to spending money again too.  They can't accomplish everything with trades.

Starting pitching literally carried us tye 2nd half of the season but just got destroyed.  Once the Rangers beat Bradish I felt they had the confidence and there top 2 pitchers which turned the tables,  if we win game 1 the entire series is different,

I think losing John Means for the series was the difference.  His presence in the rotation was a major shot in the arm the last several weeks of the season.  Even if a couple of our starters struggle, the ability to go to Means in Game 2 or 3 gives the O's a chance.  Without him everyone else has to be fairly dominant.

The offense has had a bad 3 weeks

Agreed, but the story of the postseason is that they've gotten to our starting pitching early.

Kind of unexpected, but I think that missing John Means was more than this staff could handle against this kind of lineup.

  12. I don't see this as the Orioles not having good enough relievers to win.  Oriole pitching overall has been quite good the past couple of months.

I was not able to watch much of yesterday's game, but I see this as the wrong relievers put in the wrong situation.  Why Baker -- who hadn't pitched in how long for the O's?  And why Webb -- who was rocked just the day before?  If Hall and Wells were to be saved for later, then whey not Kyle Gibson or possibly Flaherty?  Hindsight is 20/20 but even at the time pitching these two early in a close post-season game just felt like -- no!

Shorten the season to 154 games and start the playoffs a week earlier. Maybe it ends a week later in November still, but does that really matter? Know this isn’t going to ever happen, but just my thoughts.

Agreed though I'd make it even shorter than that.  The season is already too long and then they force more postseason games on us.  The fans have less and less of an attention span for each game the more they thrust on us.

  14. I thought Hicks should have swung at the pitch on which Gunnar ran.  But I can't remember what the count was though it looked like a good pitch.

You're right that Hicks hasn't looked good at the plate lately, but at least Hicks drew too walks today, which is more than most of the rest of the team did at the plate.   It does feel like Kjerstad's bats is needed now, whether it's in place of Hicks or O'Hearn or somebody else.  The good news is that Santander, Mountcastle, Hays and Gunnar all looked pretty good at the plate today.  Mullins looks like maybe he's playing hurt.  If he can give us anything it would be a major lift.

I didn't like Frazier coming in the game so early. Westburg hit the ball hard in his one at bat before getting lifted.

Frazier was great with the bat over the summer but it's just not there now.  Don't like him getting at bats over Westburg anymore unless it's an obvious matchup situation other than just lefty/righty.

But it's really O'Hearn and Mullins who have to start hitting again.  You have to wonder if Hyde is considering sitting O'Hearn in favor of Kjerstad.

Keep in mind that I qualified all of this with a subjective "my feeling is... my vibe is..." and acknowledged my noobness to the team. :D That being said, I dont know where Santander would go, but my "feel" is that he has the ability to be a superstar, not just on the field, but socially - like movie-star / media / tabloid sort of thing. I think he finds a fanbase (sometime, somewhere) that makes him a hometown hero/celebrity.

No false dichotomy meant re: M & K. I'm simply explaining the fantasy league that's in my mind. OP --> "IF I HAD to choose".  Let's say it was a money thing... or a get rid of one or two to bring in some other dynamic. Other than that, I'm gleaning from the forums and taking a shot at participating. :D

Santander is a good player who I happen to like a lot but definitely not a "superstar" numbers wise.  He's perhaps comparable to Adam Jones with the bat (though not the glove).  But looking at his stats he's not at all comparable to a true baseball superstar like Aaron Judge, Ronald Acuna or Mookie Betts.  If you're suggesting he might want to go play for a big market team in NY, California or Texas, then I'm sure many of them would be interested, but certainly not at superstar money.

But this does touch on a point that I have thought a bit about lately.  Santander is 28.  Some players don't peak until their early 30s or so.  That's probably true for only a minority of players, but it is possible he could be one of those guys.  Probable?  Maybe not.  But I would not be surprised if Santander's best years are in the future.  We'll have to wait and see.

I know it starts at 10...I also know that Oriole players of the past will speak...Doug DeCinces is one I know for sure...Jim Palmer told me he will NOT speak because it's too emotional for him to get through...I will not be attending..I am in LA but the speakers were all selected by the Orioles and Brooks' immediate family will speak too...Connie will NOT speak...

Shucks, too bad you're not going since you have such a history with all these players.  I hope you make it to a playoff game at some point.

We are most likely contending next year - No reason to deal Santander unless we vastly disappoint. He’s not Manny so whomever we get back is t lineky to be better than guys already on the roster or in AAA. If we are close it isn’t worth a low A guy to move him because he can win a game at any time with his bat.

I mean I do agree with the many people who say here that if Cowser or Kjerstad or some other hitter emerges as good or better than Santander, then yes of course it makes sense to trade him.

But I just don't trust prospect rankings.  Don't assume a player will be as good as high as he ranked until he proves it over a period of time.  In 2016 Jorge Mateo was the Yankees top prospect, just ahead of Aaron Judge -- just to name one example.  For this reason I think Santander hangs around a little awhile -- unless the O's trade for or sign a replacement outfield bat prior to the season -- in addition to trading Santander.

They said their plan is the Rays model. You can expect them to move players rather than sign them long term. The guy you need long term is Henderson and Bradish.

I think it’s very possible they send Santander & Mullins. If Means would agree to a team friendly deal it’s possible he gets a 2-3 year extension.

But the Rays did lock up some of their best hitters -- mainly Evan Longoria and Wander Franco.  I know Santander is not at that level, but I think there's a good chance Santander is with the team to start next season.  I think it's a mistake to assume someone is ready to take over for him until he proves it.  If not then trade for or sign someone who is -- if he must be traded now or pretty soon.

I don't trust prospect rankings.  In 2016 Jorge Mateo was the Yankees top prospect, just ahead of Aaron Judge.

Also, the Orioles don't really have the pitching in the minors the way the Rays always seem to.  Can't imagine Means or any decent pitcher getting traded for that reason.  And for a long time the Rays weren't a very good hitting team, which I think is a big reason the Rays never tried to lock up their position players until guys like Evan Longoria started to emerge, though there may be a bit more to it than that.
