  1. I know this thread is grade the Orioles trade deadline, but I’d be furious if I were an A’s fan, knowing they held on to Rooker and Miller. I don’t see how Rooker’s value will get higher than right now. And Miller, despite the finger injury to his non throwing hand, is unlikely to see his value increase. I know they want to try him as a SP, but that’s risky considering his injury history. Considering the returns that selling teams were getting, I don’t know how the A’s couldn’t pull something off there.

No doubt Mayo is much better than Jimenez.  I think they got him instead of promoting Mayo for two reasons:

    1.  Like you said, service time issues.   They’d rather preserve Mayo’s rookie status for 2024 by keeping him down at least another 2-3 weeks.

    2. The role here is basically part time DH vs. LHP.   They’d rather have Mayo in Norfolk playing defense every day than sitting on the bench 2/3 of the time.

That said, I’ll predict that Jimenez only lasts 3-4 weeks before we cut him and bring up Mayo.  By the way, since coming off the IL on June 23, Jimenez has an ISO of .042.   I have serious doubts that he’s healthy.

It seems strange to spend so much money on the off chance that preserving Mayo’s rookie status for next year gets you an extra draft pick in 2026. Not sure how much the White Sox are kicking in, but it’s an odd choice. I can somewhat understand the not wanting Mayo to be here only in a platoon role, but the thing is he doesn’t have to be in a platoon role. He can start taking some ABs from Mountcastle too. This never ending cycle of having the top ranked farm system and being scared to death to use them is getting old. It’s exacerbated by the fact that the guys playing ahead of the top prospects are mediocre vets.

Up until this year, Rogers has missed bats and thrown strikes at an above average rate. This year that’s not the case. Why?  I would guess whatever that reason, the Os figure it’s an easy fix

So why not make that trade before the season starts? Why wait until the deadline to acquire Rodgers?

Mayo will be up now.  We are done, and although we gave up a lot of LHP Trevor Rogers i think we had to.  Stowers does not have a place on the team and Norby is also not have a solid one.  Bring up Mayo right now, and sign Santander!

I don’t understand these comments about a player being blocked, so it doesn’t matter how much value you get for them. Just because Norby and Stowers are blocked doesn’t mean we have to take less value for them.

The injurie are not his fault. Your asking him to predict the future of a pitcher.

His name is on the door, he gets the credit and the blame.

He knew in the off-season about Means and Bradish. Neither were available in the spring. If he did t anticipate they wouldn’t be pitching, that’s poor planning. Also why it’s important to not put all your eggs in one basket.

29 games in the cleanup slot this season.

Yeah but the Giants probably don’t know that. We can trick them.

In all seriousness, I wonder what it would take to acquire Snell. I have a feeling it’s a lot more than most would be willing to pay.

I agree with some of what your saying

It's a flaw with Elias's drafting strat. If no one wants to trade pitching, you can have all the offense you want, it does you no good. Hence where the overpay comes in. I believe he is in that position now. We are short in the rotation, through no fault of his own and the names dangling have lots of risk, save for Skubal.

Through no fault of his own??? He didn’t know Means and Bradish were damaged goods coming into this season? He made no effort to acquire any SP besides Burnes.

I don’t see him as trying to fool people.   I can’t think of one game where he had a consistently good changeup.   Maybe one game where he had a consistently good curve.  And his fastball command is below average.   Add it all up and you have a pitcher who can’t survive in the majors.

Obviously, we didn’t see him at his best but the time for tryout camp is over.

When I say trying to fool people, I mean not trusting his stuff and trying to get them to chase. It could just be that he has no ability to command his pitches, which might be even worse.

Povich had that one really good start against Atlanta.   For a guy who struck out a ton of guys in the minors there’s just no evidence of that kind of stuff in the majors.    Combine that with bad control and you don’t have much.   I have to believe that Povich can develop into a #4 or #5 but even that’s hard to see right now.   He has the fastball, cutter, changeup, and curveball.    Can’t say any of them looked plus but that variety is what got him the K’s in the minors.  Never really saw him having all 4 pitches working, sometimes not even 1 or 2.

The options for #5 starter right now are pretty scary.

Even that start against Atlanta was a little smoke and mirrors. The Braves were struggling terribly in offense at the time. Until he develops plus command, he’s not a ML pitcher. Too much trying to fool people instead of throwing strikes.

I mean that's what I'm saying. There's not a great fit other than Skubal, but it's probably not enough to get it done.

I think if there IS a fit, it's Miller.

Yeah I could see a Miller trade being headlined by Kjerstad. What’s his status now that he broke his finger? I doubt he gets traded now.

I would be shocked but I wouldn't fire Elias on the spot and I don't think the fact Fedde pitched in the KBO last year makes him inferior to other pitchers.

What about his poor results every other year except this one? It would show incompetent judgment. That’s a good reason to fire someone. That said, I have no reason to think Elias is incompetent so nothing to worry about.

If I'm the Tigers I'm definitely holding out for Mayo or Basallo, for sure. So I definitely remain very skeptical that Skubal is a real possibility.

Is there a pitcher where Kjerstad as the headliner makes more sense? Fedde? Maybe Snell talent-wise, but it's too much for an expensive rental with injury issues. Hard to picture a fit with any 1-year rentals.

If Elias tried to give up Kjerstad for Fedde, a guy who was in KBO last year, he should be fired on the spot.

I dont think you piled on. Its a fact unless Adley is injured, Dont think youre going to McCann at all.

I’d like to think it’s a fact, but I don’t put it past Hyder to get his lineup against LH in a playoff game.
