Lopez is under team control for two years, Mullins for 3. Who are the internal options to replace Mullins? Pretty much anyone who’s played in the majors or AAA is a defensive downgrade. Beavers or Fabian are two years away, by which time Lopez is a free agent. I don’t think I would trade Mullins for Lopez even up.
Cowser seems just about ready, and he could take over in center. Hays, while better in left, could play center with Stowers becoming the full time left fielder. Yes, it is a defensive downgrade, but Lopez is a huge upgrade to Voth/Wells whoever he would replace in the rotation.
Or, they could sign someone as a stop gap for a year, such as Kiermaier.

Also from Bowden
Trade proposal: The Orioles offer outfielder Anthony Santander and minor leaguer Connor Norby to Miami for López. Who says no? — Matt S.
Let me change it up: If the Orioles offer Cedric Mullins, they’re getting López. The Marlins’ No. 1 priority is to acquire a long-term solution for center field, and Mullins has been at or near the top of their target list for two years.
Mullins for Lopez is a no brainer for the Orioles. We have the internal options to replace Ced (love Ced, as a fan, woiuld hate to see him go) and Lopez provides young upside with team control.

Roch's job is to convince fans that the Orioles are not being lazy and cheap for shopping in the second tier, but that it is strategic and in the best interest of the Baltimore Orioles. It's a tiresome act.

Just saw this. Bet part of return is bringing Jesse Winker home to Buffalo-Toronto metro area where he can watch pitches like Craig Biggio and help them with L/R balance.
Kind of a fun challenge trade to the extent Julio and Vlad's teams got a little rowdy with each other last month.
I was thinking the same thing, but it looks like Winker is staying put for now. I am guessing Hernandez is a Haniger replacement.

I think anyone with draft pick compensation attached will likely be passed on.
Not saying you're wrong, but I think that is a very poor and short-sighted approach if that's what the Orioles do.

I saw this on mlb trade rumors and thought it would be interesting to see who people might put as their Orioles predictions.

I ended up with Taillon, Eflin and Brantley on the Orioles though i didn't do a lot of research and figured we wouldn't spend any more on big time free agents.
That was fun. I predicted Josh Bell, Wacha, and Walker to the O's (ugh).

Seattle is shooting high. They have traded for Teoscar Hernandez. Will be interesting to see the return for the Jays.

From Jim Bowden in the Athletic. Encouraging.
They should be trying to sign someone from the deep end (Verlander/Rodon) and someone from the middle of the pool (Walker/Taillon). I wouldn't count on Voth as a starter entering the season. Let's wait and see.

That’s what DVRs are for!
Fair point! Though I don't have the self-discipline to not follow the box score om mlb.com

Cannot understate how much I hate mid-week day games. Do they not understand that people work during the day? From a personal standpoint, I look forward to watching a night game after a long day, and less of that is obviously not ideal.

MLB Trade Rumors also released their top 50 FA's with predictions. Of the 4 panelists, the O's got votes of signing, Jameson Taillon, Taijaun Walker, Sean Manaea, and JD Martinez.
2 panelists thought the O's would sign Taillon - and this feels a lot more reasonable on where the O's will shop, even though I hope they at least entertain the prospect of going for a Verlander, deGrom, Rodon, or even Senga.
Just read that. That would be supremely disappointing, to say the least.

Correa seems to be a lazy response to us apparently having interest from last year. A lot can change in a year and with Mateo emerging as at least serviceable at short, Gunnar looking like a future superstar and the selection of Holliday it makes even less sense.
Yeah, I write for FanSided now (birdswatcher) and I feel like I could have also put this article together with little to no research (and predicted Correa to the O's based on last year's "pursuit."

I would much prefer Abreu, one of the first or even second tier FA starters (Bassit, Eovaldi, Perez) plus one more starter and a catcher.

Exactly.
They should be aiming to be better.
Exactly. And finally, they appear to be. It wasn't long ago that they were too lazy to sign a bat to improve the team and went dumpster diving for the likes of Colby Rasmus and Travis Snider and tried to play them up as key acquisitions. I sincerely hope those days are over.

So refreshing to have a GM who knows what they hell they are doing.
Yup. It would have been so easy (and lazy) to simply pick up the option and say "well, we addressed our rotation!" Definitely something you would expect from an old iteration of the front office.

Good stuff from Mike Elias here. He predicts that we will address the MLB roster as soon as possible.
-
My philosophy is simple. Sign good bats because the team obviously needs better players to help them win. If the bat DHs, you will find spots for the other players coming up during the season, whether through injuries, players struggling, matchups, etc. But that should not preclude us from adding bats to help the team be better.

They shouldn't.
The money could be better spent as a partial payment to a player who is likely to exceed his production.
I think they will bring him back.
I don't think that bringing him back with the idea to then trade him is worth the risk.
This is exactly my thinking.

Things that make you go "what?"

1) Sign Abreu to play 1st
2) Sign either Rodon or Verlander
3) Trade Mullins + prospects for the best Marlins starter you can get.
This is pretty much where I'm at. Also kick the tires on Arenado if he opts out.

Going with Cowser. I have been impressed with his rise through the ranks, and think (hope) at this time next year, he'll be starting in the outfield along with Stowers and one of Santander/Mullins/Hays. I can see him putting up a high 700-low 800 OPS in his first season, and could see him coming up by June.

So...uh, when does free agency start?

Fair points regarding service time. I wouldn't mind keeping Mullins around, but I think Lopez is better than most of the second/third tier guys such as Taillon, Quintana, Walker and he is cheaper (again, wish it was longer than a two year commitment).
