    Dude, it's fine.

We can just sign Chris Archer and instantly turn him back into an ace.

That's what ownership wants the fans to think... or that Austin Voth can repeat his unexpected success from 2022, so why fork over millions of dollars for someone with a proven track record?

How does our current rotation stack up with the other current AL East rotations?
Toronto, Tampa, Yankees, Orioles and Boston tie?

Maybe slightly better than Boston's.  Significantly worse than the other 3.

The only concern with Bassitt is age and the 3 year contract takes care of that. To not sign him at 3 years is just being cheap.

Right.  I may be wrong, but I would think if they match 3 years 63, with Walltimore and the knowledge that fellow free agent Gibson took our deal over the Jays, good chance Bassitt signs here too.  If it turns out the Orioles offered the same deal and he chose the Jays, I'll sit back down.

You wanted to give Bassitt that kind of contract?

If it were up to some posters on here, the Orioles would have a payroll of... checks notes... 26 dollars.  One dollar per player.  I am seriously convinced of this.

I think a lot of us did... the Orioles have an absurdly low payroll, Bassitt was a good fit for a young rotation, and only got three years.  But what do we know?

I know its the Angelos' at the heart of it. That said, Mike Elias seems to have been speaking out of turn a few times here and there. Both parties suck right now if you ask me.

Can;t get this team away from that family fast enough.

I think Elias said what he really thought/hoped ownership would let him do, and had to backtrack when the Angeloses called him into their office to say, um, actually, we don't want to spend any of our money on improving the team via free agency.

Honestly, after 4 years of spending the absolute bare minimum on the major league team, to be back to dumpster diving in 2022/2023 is pretty demoralizing as a fan. One would think that they should have some money to spend, this year, next year, etc. Yet here we are again.

Elais has said he doesn't want to mortgage the future by over-paying for free agents. Yet if he has any hope of improving the rotation at this point it will almost certainly have to be via trade. SO instead of just spending money, the Orioles will now likely have to spend money, and prospects. How is improving the rotation via trade better than signing a guy Bassit for 3yr/63mm? That contract should have been very doable for the Orioles with all the cash they are theoretically sitting on. Hell if it goes bad it's only on the books for 3 years and the orioles could eat the whole thing before the rest of the roster gets very expensive.

Cheap, that's what they are. it's beyond frustrating at this point. Going forward, I would prefer Mike Elias just not open his mouth regarding free agency, cause I believe he is not speaking honestly with fans, and only paying lip service. He has had to walk back his words on a few occasions already, and it looks as though he is going to fail at his stated goal of upgrading the rotation.

I really blame the Angeloses a lot more than I blame Elias, but I agree with your post.

I hope that they prove me wrong and go after Eovaldi.   I think the O's need another proven starter.

100% Gibson for Lyles is essentially a lateral move.  How about actually trying to improve, instead of standing pat for once?

So like I thought, he wasn’t getting the 4th year.  He got a little higher AAV than I thought he would get but not by much.

I can’t say I would have beaten this offer but I would have considered matching it.

Eovaldi should sign for less and the Os should be all over that.

Eovaldi and/or Lopez at this point, or it will be more pathetic offseason failures for this team.

Good question.   They are probably looking for a trade of some sorts.   Can't afford anything over 10M/season.

Pathetically cheap if they really cannot afford anything over $10M.  Shows nothing has changed with this awful ownership.

I’m curious what people think about whether each of our players has more upside or downside for 2023 compared to last year?  Here are my votes.  (U = upside, D = downside, E = even)

    Mountcastle - U

    Mateo - U (offense)

Urias - U (health and offense)

Henderson - U (playing time and offense)

    Hays - U (offense)

    Mullins - E

    Santander - D

Rutschman - U (playing time and offense)

    Stowers - U

    Vavra - U

    McKenna - E

Kremer - D (ERA worse, but more innings)

Bradish - U (ERA and innings)

    Voth - D

    Wells - E

    Gibson - U

    Bautista - E

    Tate - E

    Perez - D

    Baker - U

Hall - U (ERA and innings)

    Krehbiel - D

    Akin - D

    Watkins - D

Overall, I think our offense has more upside than downside.   Unfortunately, I think there’s more downside on the pitching side.

    What are your thoughts?

Great post.  I agree on all except Hays, who I think kind of is what he is at this point.  I'd give him an E.

I'll say Brandon Belt on a 1 year deal and Sean Manaea on a 2 year deal with an option of some kind, with no notable trades prior to the start of the season. I think the Marlins will ultimately hook up with Arizona for one of their young CFs, which eliminates Lopez and Rogers as potential targets, and that Elias will not meet Seattle's asking price for a single season of Chris Flexen, and I also do not think Burnes, Woodruff, Bieber, or Gallen are available right now.

    Ew lol.

You might be right though.  I am hoping for Bassitt or Eovaldi on a miracle short term deal and Conforto/Brantely on a 1 or 2 year deal.

Yea but are the Os going to pay 2/50 for Eovaldi or Bassitt?

Id be more on board with that than 4/75 for either but I don’t see the Os being willing to spend that much per year.

Fair points.  I'm sure Eovaldi and Bassitt would prefer more years as they are possibly looking at their last "big" contract.  I could stomach three years for either one at $18-20M per season; I wonder what the multi-year offers are that Elias keeps talking about.

No doubt, it's a tough thread to needle.  I do think there are some decent options left who would be upgrades from what the Orioles have now who if they won't take a one year deal might be able to be had on a 2 year deal which is also fine.

I agree.  From an offensive standpoint, I think Brantley at 2 years $26-32 is a worthwhile investment as a DH and occasional left fielder.  From the pitching side of things, it is definitely less clear, though perhaps you can convince Eovaldi/Bassitt to sign a 2 year deal (likely would take three) at a higher AAV.
