Please - please - I know we are all bored - but let "sleeping dogs lie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" (With no intended negative association to "dogs.")

Anytime I think of Davis and how god awful he was during that contract - in reality, it was 100X worse than we all remember it.  All the waves and a miss.  All the called strike threes.  All the refusal to do anything about it.  What a waste he was for all those years.

As I had stated earlier, I think that pricing Joe Lunchbox out of the baseball entertainment dollar is what is unhealthy for the sport's future.  And any suggestion that player salary and the cost of attending an MLB ball game are not heavily interdependent is being willfully blind to the correlation and the causation. Teams chase revenue. Success drives revenue. Teams chase success by attempting to buy it through insane free agency. The purchase price is passed along to consumers in the form of ticket, concession, memorabilia, and merch prices... in addition to broadcast rights prices... which fuels the next round of spending.

You can argue chicken or egg if you want to... but the price of Baseball as entertainment has explosively outpaced inflation... making it unavailable to all but the most successful. Particularly when viewed over the course of a 162 game season. Going to a baseball game used to be like going to the movies. Now it's like going to a Broadway Show... in a limo.

You're right... there's no use in crying about.

But I'm not suggesting crying about it. I'm suggesting a way to succeed without participating in it... And one which could have an infectiously positive impact on the future of the game.

This is an absurd and bizarre, to put it kindly, position to take.  The Orioles should be doing EVERYTHING they can, and using all resources and avenues available, to make the team better, now and in the future.  This means they should be drafting and scouting well, utilizing the international market, making smart trades, and signing free agents.

This is like saying I like when my boss takes me to McDonald's for lunch, so why would I ever want him or her to take me out to the Palm, even if they suggest it? Just because you, for some reason, would rather the Angeloses keep more money in their pockets then spend it to make the team better.  I mean, the mental gymnatsics and hoops you jump through to say, "I want the Orioles to be a small market team and not add good players in free agency" is just ridiculous.  My only guess is that you are a close friend or relative of ownership, and are trying to convince fans to not want to spend your friends/family members' money on good players.

The Orioles have the depth in the farm system to acquire one of these top pitchers that could be available, especially infield depth.

Would love Burnes.  I have not seen any projected trade offers, but I wonder if something like Santander (I know they traded Renfroe to cut costs, but they will need a replacement) Mayo, Westburg, and Hall would get it done.

I wonder what type of contracts it would take to snatch up Quintana and Elfin. I think they could be some affordable pursuits, and probably wouldn't take too many years either.

I wonder what Josh Bell's price will be. Is he worth 3/45? Could he get better than that? A buy low for Winker could be a good move especially if Santander is dealt and even if he isn't depending on how Hyde uses the DH and Corner OF. I wonder if he could be taught to play any 1B. Thomas would be an interesting pursuit as well; it's a good depth move as we need a little more MLB ready CF depth, especially depending on any moves Elias decides to make.

I wrote an article about Bell for FanSided a few weeks ago.  I think he'll get more than he's worth (projects are four years 60-64M).  He is very streaky and not a great defender.  You might get an 800+ OPS from him, but I just don't think that's worthwhile for four years when others can be had cheaper (Winker perhaps).

    Baltimore Orioles

Needs: Starting pitching, a left-handed hitter

Free-agent targets: Carlos Rodón, LHP; Nathan Eovaldi, RHP; Chris Bassitt, RHP; José Quintana, LHP; Jameson Taillon, RHP, Taijuan Walker, RHP; Kodai Senga, RHP; Zach Elfin, RHP; Ross Stripling, RHP; Josh Bell, 1B/DH; Dominic Smith, 1B; Andrew Benintendi, LF; Cody Bellinger, 1B/OF; Michael Conforto, RF; Jurickson Profar, OF

Trade targets: Kolten Wong, 2B; Luis Arraez, INF; Ian Happ, INF/OF; Jake McCarthy, OF; Josh Rojas, INF/OF; Jesse Winker, OF/DH; Alek Thomas, OF; Pablo López, RHP

The Orioles have been busy, talking with practically every team and agent in the industry. They are focused on the second and third tiers of the starting pitching market and on trying to acquire a left-handed bat for their lineup. They can offer plenty of playing time to a left-handed hitter at first base, both corner outfield spots, second base and as the designated hitter. This is going to be a fun offseason for Orioles fans because their team will make multiple moves.

One of Rodon, Eovaldi, and Bassitt.  Explore trades for Wong and Lopez and maybe Winker.

Yea never would want to add a reclamation project on a minor league deal like I note. The guy knows he could get an opportunity if he turns and mount continues to struggle

I'm fine with adding Smith as a bench guy and fill in for injuries, but not as our "significant bat."  If the Orioles are serious about competing now--and they say they are--they should not be giving hundreds of at bats to a reclamation projects like Smith.

DeGroms last 3 years 68, 92, and 64 innings. Knowing that you’d give him the anticipated 3/125? If so I have some property underwater in Florida that might be above water in the next 15-20 years to sell you.

What was the Dodgers alleged offer? Did it include Kershaw?

Again, this is all from memory, but I don't think it did.  It was rumored to include LaRoche, Hu, Elbert, and maybe Kemp or Ethier?  Reds offer was better.

  9. 2 minutes ago, Roll Tide said:

DeGrom is going to give you 100-110 innings tops. Are you really advocating 30-40 million for that? Verlander gets 4 or 5 from some fool. At 39 that’s a bad gamble imo.

I feel much better rolling the dice with 28 year olds. The two guys plus Senga or one of the other guys

I'd be shocked if a team gives Verlander 4 or 5 years at this age, but we'll see.  deGrom definitely  comes with his risks, but if the Orioles doctors are convinced he can pitch (and I would obviously want more than 100-110 innings on average per year), then I think it is worthwhile.

100% agree and would be quite satisfied with Verlander and Abreu, and a trade for a second SP.

I tend to trust what the national media is saying over Roch anyway, so I don't get too bent out of shape over what Roch says.  It's just annoying that any time the national media says "hey, the Orioles might be aggressive and pursue good player X," Roch is like, "actually, I would expect them to be shopping in the bargain bin, because Orioles."

But they won't, and especially not for positions that are not a pressing need like SS.

They should be willing to spend big money on Verlander (or deGrom if convinced he is healthy), and spend moderate money ($15-20M) on a solid bat like Abreu to help the lineup.  If there ever was a time to spend on free agents, its now, when the payroll is dirt cheap.

But if he passed up the Reds supposed offer of Votto and Hamilton, he didn’t do quite as good.

    From Roch today:

When you say the Orioles aren't shopping in the top tier of free agency, does that include Carlos Rodón?

He’s in the top tier. The Orioles may float some offers, as I’ve said, but they’ll be much more aggressive on the second and third levels. Upgrades are available. To say they’re “fishing in the deep end” of free agency doesn’t mean they’re ready to break the bank. It means they’re talking to agents and getting an accurate read on the prices. Never hurts to do that.

Does Roch actually know anything?  Is he being told this by the club?  Or is he just stating his opinion?  I believe the latter.  Doesn’t mean he’s wrong.

Not saying he's wrong, but man, does Roch seem to get a bizarre joy out of pouring cold water on fans' hopes of the Orioles going for big fish in the free agent market (or other things fans would want).

Bedard Trade Madness was incredible. I was in Spain that off-season and was spending all my euros on internet cafe credits to see what was(n't) going on.

What a time to be alive! I remember it interfering with my ability to study for finals.  Reviewing rumors was fun back in the day.

Don’t forget about the “Wow Offer”. Not sure which one of the insider maybe it was Big Bird said that it was being sent to Texiera’s agent.

Yup, and that Tex would be at a Ravens Steelers game.  Trea ate that stuff up.

Those Dodgers rumors were the best. That's what I'm talking about.

Sports Guy did get his three way trade this year.

Yup.  The Angels rumors for Santana, Kotchman, Wood.  Seems like just yesterday, though it was, sadly, 14 years ago.  That makes me feel really old (I'm 34.)

  17. Belkast updates on the Orioles interest in Nomar Garciaparra as a potential option at first base back in 06? 07? But he had to change diapers first.

Or a Bedard and Tejada deal to the Dodgers for Kemp, LaRoche, Elbert, Hu. Gooooood times.
