Yennier 6 innings along hits me as one of the biggest wildcards for whatever this year might be - are we on the Cesar Valdez or Felix Bautista half of the football field?

Goodness gracious if Orioles PD is in the Bautista half again.

Nice post.... Cano seems like a mix of Valdez and Bautista, and I don't know if I've enjoyed watching a pitcher as much as Cano since Valdez was waiting for the midnight bell to toll.

Wonder if he is hiding an injury.  He just looks awful

Didn't think about that, could be. He came in with the track record of a command guy. What we've seen so far a the ML level is the opposite of that. Hope he rights the ship and is ready when his number is called. Depth, especially with pitching, it be important.

I realize it's not exactly the same thing, but in EVERY baseball telecast, including nearly every Oriole commercial break.... there are not just ads for Draft Kings, a betting site...there are IN GAME references to odds and various gambling "chances"...
Which, to me, makes the entire Pete Rose saga and ban, seem weak and hypocritical.
Again, it's not exactly the same thing, but MLB speaks out of both sides of their mouth. And I dont care if Rose ever gets in the HOF. He broke baseballs cardinal sin.
On one hand, baseball frowns on against gambling as a threat to the sport, and on the other they gladly take the money from gambling sites as sponsors of their telecasts and the league.
I find it so pathetically hollow and contradictory.

Could not agree with this more. Such a gross money grab that reveals how shallow the soul of MLB actually is. Anyone who has ever walked into a minor league or major league clubhouse has seen the sign. I get casual fans all the time saying Rose should be let into the Hall because he only bet on his team to win. But, what happens when Rose gets deep into debt, and the bad actors offer to wipe his slate clean if only he'll throw one game, maybe a playoff game? Or what happens if he needs to win a game he bet on, desperately, and lets a hot-shot rookie pitcher stay out there too long and blows out his arm? No, gambling in baseball can do no good, and can only do harm. If anyone doubts, go back and read the sports pages in 1920-1922 about the Black Sox scandal.

I think one of the factors for one of the bullpen players comes down to a choice between lefties: Akin or Perez.

I'm hoping it didn't strike midnight for Perez. He's simply not the same guy as last year. Concerning.

2B will come open when Frazier is traded.  He is on a one year contract and if they can get something in trade he is gone later this season.  Ortiz, Urias, Westburg can battle it out.

Okay, devil's advocate here, but this is a serious question, not just taking exception during this transition from tanking to contending.

So, what if the team is humming along, and we're looking like a serious playoff contender? If we're out of the hunt, trading vets for prospects is a no-brainer, but if Frazier is a contributing part of a winning team, do you eject him, and bring up a prospect who 'might' deliver similar value in his role?

Or, reading your post, do you not think we'll be in contention and can afford to jettison vets like Frazier, and let the kids play?

I don't quite understand the hype on Volpe. He slashed .249/.342/.460 across double- and triple-A (mostly the former) last year. I'm sure he's a great prospect but those numbers don't scream MLB-ready top 10 prospect to me.

    But, but, but Jeter! Yankees!

I thought Bradish was super impressive tonight, even though only facing the Nats.   He really reminds me of vintage Tillman.

Loved me some Chris Tillman, but could never quite understand how he was successful. At the peak of his powers, I was living in San Diego, would go to Padres games, and wonder the same thing about the tall guy, Chris Young. Only conclusion I could draw, between the two of them, was the high fastball, not at an overwhelming velocity, but consistently at an elevation that it looked enticing to a hitter. Bradish, on the other hand, seems to be able to access premium velocity, and several of the breaking balls in this game were impressive as hell. Bradish tonight moved my smile-o-meter in a positive direction. Yes, Nats, blah blah blah, but if you can't do it against them......

They took Cowser because he was cheaper and they wanted money for later.  That’s it. That’s the reason. No chance they had Cowser rated the better player with all things equal.

Sooooooo easy to say. And that's my point. I'd love to be able to see some documentation / video / reports, whatever, that reveals whatever the real truth is. You might be guided by the wisdom of Occam's razor and be 100% right. But, I suspect the complete calculus runs deeper, and just like I'd like to know the truth about JFK, and why Susie Hill dumped me in high school, I'd like to know the behind-the-scenes here.

  9. This is one of the times I wish there was video of the decision making process we could review some day. I'd love to know what they saw / knew / thought about Lawler to pass over him. Or was it they really were super wake-and-bake high on Cowser, and if so, why?

I think with Cano it’s going to be all about command.  The stuff is good, as @Tony-OHdescribed.   He kind of slings the ball in a way that makes me think he’ll have days where he can’t find the plate.  He had a 4.4 BB/9 rate in the minors.   That’s not awful for a reliever, but it suggests he’ll have his off days.

THIS. If he loses his release point, I think he'll be walk-city. He appears, in the SSS I've seen him, to have a very wide range of possible outcomes. We can dream he's harnessing that wickedness..... it's been fun to watch.

  11. Watching Cano, I get a really weird César Valdez vibe, except the ball travels at mucho elevated velocity. Kind of gives me Stan "full pack" vibes, but dammmmmm, he's been nails. Please, baseball gods, we've been good, we've been patient, we pay our taxes, and respect women. We deserve nice things.

His progress may be the most exciting story of the offseason. He should shoot up the rankings if he keeps this up in AA. Big question to me is defense. He clearly can hit and hit for big time power. Who would you rather have right now, Cowser or Kjerstad?

    Both, please.

Looking at the roster and getting a strong "San-tan-der is / should be the odd man out" vibe, depending on what we could get for him in a trade.

Hays, as a 4th outfielder / Merv Rettenmund '69-'71 type role, opens spots for both of them. McKenna is Norfolk filler waiting to be needed. e tu, Stowers?

Man, it's nice to be talking about these "issues."

DL Hall. He has the same ability to leap up the charts as Gunnar. The talent and arm is all there. It’s just a matter of refining his command.

This is an excellent point. If DL can establish himself in the rotation, and GRod meets expectations, 40% of our rotation just became "pillars". And these two are replacing the #4 and #5 guys. I think this would be a huge development in our outlook for '23 and beyond.

I saw that he ranked 590 out of 594 pitchers in 4 seam fastball success.   Opponents hit .321 against it with a whopping slugging percentage.  Speed was fine- close to 96 MPH average.  Experts say the pitch is too straight.  It get hit a ton because it doesn't have velocity.   Can anyone work with him on changing his grip or something to give it more movement or sink or something?

Tony did an excellent breakdown of this very subject. I've never linked to another thread, but its here somewhere.

I would grade it incomplete.  There’s no way to grade an offseason on 12/15 unless you assume that’s all the moves the team will make.

Rational brain has no ability to dispute or disagree with this.

Fan Brain is short circuiting and freaking at low voltage.

Free agency is the one area to add players that can make a difference. (if you have payroll space, which we "do", air quotes)

With a free agent of some repute for a position, the prospects in line for that position can be traded for upgrades elsewhere.

I'm having the same queasy feeling as when Jimenez was pitching and Britton was sitting.......
