Here's the thing, though, we currently are "sniffing .500." This team is 8-10, and was 8-9 prior to yesterday's loss. They could certainly end up winning less than 70 games yet again, but it seems a bit odd to label them as not even "sniffing .500" when they're doing it right now, as we speak.

I didn’t label them as anything. I said what people want the team to be. Also ftr, 4 years of losing would include this year. Next year is the .500 target.

I don't mind that answer, either.  But there are some armchair GMs here that'll say you should be able to do it in 4 without fail.

I’m not sure anyone is asking for pennant contention in 4 years, people just want a team that will sniff .500 after 4 years of losing.

Something some folks thought they would never see.

No the runner had no business going and a cut off man was involved but still, it counts.

I think he may have had him without Galvis. Either way, I’ve been more worried about him getting to balls and his internal clock, and they both looked good on that play.

    Game 17, April 20

With nobody out and Ruiz on 2B in the 8th, Galvis missed a bunt attempt and Ruiz was caught off balance and hung out to dry when the catcher fired to second, except that the throw was about three feet too high and sailed into CF, allowing Ruiz to avoid the consequence of his mistake and advance to 3B to boot.

I think there’s a good chance that if the guy covering second catches that ball he still doesn’t get it to 3rd in time to get Ruiz. Poor play by the catcher immediately throwing instead of charging the runner and making him commit.

I think he's more likely to be traded when players like Diaz and Milk Carton Lad make it to the majors.

No great insight, I just think he gets lost in the roster squeeze.

I wouldn’t be surprised with any outcome for this outfield group. Santander might carry the most trade value, Hays has the most diverse fielding ability and Mullins might just keep surprising us. But Stewart’s AB’s have been looking more and more comfortable and I could see OBP being valued with a slew of RBI guys on their way.

They didn't have income for a year either, but the Orioles raised everything but the ticket pricing.  I saw the parking in the A Annex lot went from $10 to $15 on gameday.  A Big Boogs is now $17.50 or $18.50, and you get a small bag of chips as opposed to the large handful you got before.  Add in a beer, and it's $30 for a meal.  $5.50 for water, $6.50 for bottled soda. Unless it is another double-header, I'm out on the food.  It's ridiculous.

I was very hungry so I paid the $13.50 I think it was for a regular Boogs sandwich and an additional $3 or $4 for the beans. I do not recommend this. The beans come in a tiny cup (maybe 4 or so spoonfuls worth) and taste the same as Bush’s. Absolute ripoff.

Question:   If Hyde had pinch run Ruiz for Franco, do you think Ruiz would have scored?

I think it’s more likely. Unless the 3B coach held him (did Hyde answer that?) Valaika would have made the smart play to go halfway, and I prefer Valaika over Ruiz anyway.

I’m going next week.  I expect everything to be really stupid and pointless, like most of the last year.

But nothing can be worse than the criminal fees TM charges.

Think I paid +$11 per ticket. Pretty ridiculous but for some reason I was under the impression the box office was closed. Will definitely buy in person next time.

Isn't he the one who has assembled that quality in the upper minors? I don't know what anyone expects him to do with his payroll and Chris Davis's contract. I've been at least moderately impressed to ecstatic on the process regardless of the results.

That’s kind of my point. He’s collected/shepherded these pieces along, it’s time to see by next year if they’re worth a darn. Plus can he sign a good complimentary piece or two.

Agreed if we are not .500 or better by 2023 Elias needs to be fired

I would say if the team isn’t knocking on the door of .500 by next year he should be gone. There is enough quality in the upper minors right now to field a mostly competitive team next year, even if some of the long term answers (MIF, top tier starter) might not be quite ready yet.

Lots of guys are jerks.  From all I have heard Mussina was a jerk.  Loved having him on the team.

A LOT of folks think Machado is a jerk.

Machado is a jerk. Or was anyway, haven’t kept up on him as much. But he was drafted and developed by the O’s, not a free agent option.

You wouldn’t want a guy who defends his teammates and the org? I get the whole cheating thing looks bad, but maybe it just doesn’t bother me as much as a lot of other people. And everything I’ve read about Correa is that he’s a great teammate and an extremely hard worker. Sign me up if the price is right. What specifically makes him a jerk? When I think of a player who was a jerk I think of someone like Aubrey Huff, not Correa.

I’m guessing you didn’t follow his interactions with the media or what other players were saying about him last year

  13. 4 minutes ago, joelala said:

Correa is a gamer and we’d be lucky to have him. The only knock on him is durability.

He’s a jerk. There’s no denying his talent, but there are a few talented guys at the same position that don’t carry the baggage. I want guys I can root for.

  14. 21 minutes ago, Aristotelian said:

Just curious why? I haven't followed him closely enough to like or dislike. Just the cheating thing?

The cheating is the genesis of it all. Afterwards instead of apologizing he chose to be abrasive and act like they were victims. He seems to be roundly disliked around baseball.

Unfortunately Lindor is off the board. Correa reunion with Elias makes a lot of sense. Elias apparently prioritizing OF and pitching makes you think free agency might be the plan for infield.

I will boo Correa every time he steps to the plate in an Orioles uniform if that were to happen.

  16. Parking is also by card. I went to the rain postponement, and tbh the ushers were total buzzkills. Stood in the concourse during a particularly long period of rain, went down the tunnel to see if anything was happening with grounds crew and after about 5-10 seconds an usher came over and said I couldn’t stand there. Before he walked over there was nobody within 50 feet of me. In the concourse, was eating peanuts and having a beer with my brother, nobody within 20 or so feet and apparently my brother dithered in between sips too long and somebody (looked to be more of a full time employee) came over and told him he should be more considerate of others and put his mask up in between sips. Meanwhile, everyone nearby was doing roughly the same thing.

I get they are trying to keep people safe (or at least comfortable in their own minds) but they need to be given a little latitude when enforcing the rules, I think.

I’m just not sure I believe the Ruiz foot speed number based on 8 games of data.   It would be bizarre to me for a guy his age to go from 25.2 to 23.7 in a single offseason unless he showed up woefully out of shape.    Maybe he had a stumble or something that skewed his numbers in such a small sample.   Let’s look again after a month or two.

In any event, I put more stock in those numbers about advancing from 2B on a single than you do.   Ruiz also has scored from 1B on a double a higher percentage of the time than Franco has.

Kind of what I alluded to in game thread. Straight speed is important but not a catchall. Brian Roberts is a great example.

Sprint speeds compared to major league players.

I guess there are some other factors to consider. Maybe Hyde likes the jump Ruiz gets, maybe Ruiz is better at sliding? Not saying Hyde was right but sports seldom seem to be a straight speed question, DK Metcalf notwithstanding.
