I wonder what it is about us that we continue to allow ourselves to get our hopes up...especially when it comes to our young pitching.  Both this year and years prior.

Look, it's really simple...it's GrayRod, DL Hall and everyone else.  We've got a bunch of guys that profile anywhere from a #3 to a #5 starter or swingman.  I feel confident labeling Means a good #3, at times he can look like a #1 but he'll have starts where he looks like a back end of the rotation piece.

Kremer doesn't have the stuff to be anything more than a 3.  As far as I'm concerned, none of the other young starters we've got that are going to debut this year aren't going to be anything better than a #3, most likely.

If we want to make this rebuild happen, we need some more elite arms.  Guys like Means (and I like Means) and Kremer aren't going to get us to where we need to be.  Especially in the AL East.

I gotta disagree with the end of this. We obv need top end starters but in the playoff years last decade, it was a bunch of guys pitching well, but there wasn’t exactly a true #1. I’d prefer GRod to turn into Cole, but we need guys that can pitch games 3-5.

I’m loving this Brown/McDonald combo.   Brown is WAY better than Garceau.    He actually gets enthusiastic when things go well.

Brown is fantastic. I still laugh when I  think about his line when the O’s finally beat the Yankees last year “Nobody and I mean NOBODY! beats the Orioles 20(something) times in a row!”

  3. On the radio side, I’ve really been enjoying Geoff Arnold and Brett Hollander. They have really nice rapport and even if a little corny sometimes I find them pretty funny together.

SS has to charge the ball, second baseman has to throw like Schoop.

The ball was in the hole. No shortstop charges that unless they are standing where it ended up.

You can read about it here. Apparently Wilson called the DeShaun Watson allegations a money grab.

    https://sports.yahoo.com/texans-reporter-deshaun-watson-accusers-lawsuits-radio-interview-053931146.html

Aaron Wilson, the Houston Texans beat writer for the Houston Chronicle, is out of a job, according to Defector's Diana Moskovitz and Kalyn Kahler, just a few weeks after an eyebrow-raising interview with a Boston radio show.

During the interview with "The Greg Hill Show"on WEEI on March 19, Wilson repeatedly cast doubt on Watson's accusers, calling the allegations against the Texans quarterback a "money grab" and comparing negotiations between Watson's camp and Houston attorney Tony Buzbee, who is representing the plaintiffs, to a terrorist negotiation.

Not the smartest thing to say on the record...

I wonder if this moves Mountcastle back to DH.

Maybe day to day, but it’s not like Stewart is the answer out there. Until Hays is back I expect DJ and RMC to split time out there, maybe McKenna mixing in, but more of a late replacement.

MC’s defense has always been bad. He’s a DH and there’s no reason to think otherwise, though he might also be a passable 1B, as Trumbo was.

Im getting extremely weary of hearing people justify unjustifiable moves with “we’re not trying to win.”
That is a terrible attitude. I understand we shouldn’t-and won’t- trade away prospects for guys who can help us win an extra five games. But we should be doing our best to win with the players we have, putting those players in their best position. I’ve stated my case for better defense from the catchers, but it’s clear that MC’s best position is DH, and that’s where he should be for the team’s sake and for his own. Unless the things he needs to improve are coachable and improveable, it’s a waste of time to keep him in Left.

This season is an exercise in putting the players in a position to win games in the future. We know RMC can be the DH, and it’s pretty likely he can be a passable 1B. He will be much more valuable to the team if he can learn to play a passable LF even though 1B will most likely be his more frequent position.

He has played 29 games in left with 38 chances in those games. If we look at his blunders the last few games, I see them all to be coachable and will improve with repetition. Having that internal clock on the ball in the gap, hitting the cutoff man, taking charge on the pop up in the gap and just getting used to reading the ball.

So, according to this board, our catching sucks and if the catching sucks, it hurts the pitchers.

Yet, we have seen a number of number of guys develop with the catchers we have (guys develop in majors and minors).  Sisco has caught a lot of these guys and they develop.  Means has turned his career around with these 2 as his catchers.

We have seen Tanner Scott improve, Hunter Harvey show promise, etc...

If these guys are such a detriment to the team and organization, how is that happening?

I continue to believe that C defense is one of the most overrated and overblown things in the sport, especially with no one stealing bases anymore.

I think we’ve all seen Severino’s casual attempts to block balls in the dirt to know that good C defense isn’t overrated.

I am interested to see if any of the initiatives to increase steals in the minors make it up to the bigs, will make catcher’s arms important in a hurry.

As much as we are enjoying bashing Mountcastle for his poor defense -- the jog and dive in the fifth inning would have been a triple or inside the park HR if Mullins hadn't caught it and the play in the sixth when he let a catchable ball drop in and then threw it wildly back to the infield allowing the runner on first to advance were both ridiculous. But on that diving miss behind shortstop, Galvis should have been settled under it. Instead, Galvis froze at contact, then turned to his left towards centerfield and got completely spun around as the ball fell to what would have been over his right shoulder. Doesn't make Mountcastle's defense better but Galvis should have been camped out under that popup.

Mountcastle pulled up on his dive when Mullins streaked in front of him. That much was obvious.

The ball that RM didn’t catch wasn’t a good play but I also think he thought he would collide into Galvis, so he hesitated.

But he has to call him off and take charge there.  To me, that perfectly illustrates the newness of the position and why he needs reps out there.

Couldn’t tell but I think he did call him off. Galvis was going back for it and in much better position then sort of bailed and the ball dropped. I do agree the collision concern made him hesitate.

How many balls have been hit towards RMC in game play in similar situations? A handful?

Yep, two wild pitches or one wild really wild pitch, or an error on a pickoff play could allow this to happen. The pitcher, if on the home team could have a line of 1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 HBP, 3K and pick up a loss.

Or even a couple of sacrifice bunts/flies.

As Tony pointed out in the game thread, problem was Mountcastle was due up. Still may have wanted McKenna there. I mean, that play was worse than anything DJ Stewart has done and DJ has made some terrible plays. Could not have picked a worse spot too.

Worth noting that Yankees D cost them the game too. Severino hustled on a ball that Gleyber threw in the dirt. Franco also should have beat a ball that the 1B bobbled but he pulled up thinking he would be out. We still scored but who knows what happens with an extra out.

He batted top 7,  think he should’ve been pulled after that AB. I don’t have a catalogue memory of all of Stewart’s poor plays, but I’m not sure it was outright worse. It was a catch he should have made, no doubt, but it was on the run and with the ball tailing away. He didn’t trip and have the ball hit him in the head or something.

To be honest, I thought the second play was the worse of the two, seemed a little casual the whole time, though that is probably easier to correct.
