There are something like 8000 professional baseball players.  Another 50,000 college baseball players at various levels.  Millions who play organized baseball of some sort.  Stewart is at or near the top 1000.  At a very good college program at Florida State he was by far their best hitter.  His senior year he played on a 44-21 team and had the highest OPS by nearly .200 points.

You say Stewart was a draft mistake.  The 2015 first round has seen four, maybe five, players out of 42 become established, quality major league players - Alex Bregman, Andrew Benintendi, Mike Soroka, Walker Buehler, and possibly Dansby Swanson.  All of them except Soroka were taken prior to Stewart.  No second rounder from '15 has been worth 2 wins in the their career so far, and you have to go all the way down to #100 (Harrison Bader) to find the next 5-win player.

Who exactly did you want the Orioles to take at the time of the '15 draft?  And are you as critical of the other ~90 picks in the top 100 that have worked out no better than Stewart?  It is your opinion that the 90%+ of draftees that don't have solid MLB careers are all mistakes by the drafting team?

Some really good info here. Just another representation IMO about the massive gap between amateur/MiLB and the Majors.

We're just going to have to agree to disagree. I don't think Elias has any intent on trying to improve this team. He's goal is to give guys opportunities in order to evaluate them for the future first and foremost.

His trade of Bleier weakened the bullpen, so how does that strengthen the team? Are you expecting an actual good prospect in return? Why would the Marlins give up a good prospect for a 33-year old reliever when they were literally trying to scratch together a roster?

If it was contending team I could see the potential to get some kind of return, but it appears Elias saw this as an opportunity to strengthen the roster of a team that will be competing with the Orioles most likely for one of the worse records over the last two seasons which is what I think MLB will take into consideration when they set the order for the 2021 draft.

I’m hoping we get back a Marlins top 30 guy. Hoping that trading him this early in the season does indicate that he was “overpaid” for (albeit in a thin market).

If he really was trying to strengthen another team which would benefit us in the end then I’d be impressed and happy to call him our GM.

I think everything Elias does is with the big goal in mind and winning this season does nothing to help that. He went into this season knowing he was "tanking" once again and although he can never say this publicly, you don't trade away one of your best relievers a week into the season to another team that may be competing with you for worse record overall unless you have the big picture in mind.

Obviously there are so many wild cards this year that really anything could happen, but let's be honest here, it does not do this franchise any good to just miss out on the expanded playoffs and then lose draft position in 2021 draft.

I imagine trades of Givens, LeBlanc and Milone to happen if they continue to pitch well and especially if the Orioles find ways to keep winning.

Not sure you’re saying this but I don’t think the objective in the Bleier trade was to weaken this team. I also don’t think, if we’re comfortably sitting in 2nd place (or at least in good shape for one of the two “wildcard” spots) that the team will be weakened with the implicit goal of losing games.

I could see a trade of one of those three and Lowther or Kremer or someone entering the rotation. That being said, I’m certainly not counting on LeBlanc or Milone being of value to another team at that point and would almost prefer they get traded ASAP.

I would rather assume that someone is going to continue to act as they have previously than assume that they will change their actions.

Why would you assume he would start acting differently?  What are you basing that on?

Basing it on that systems are run differently in different situations. Heck really anything is, businesses, governments etc. Allow the situation to influence your decisions

To properly challenge the player?  Isn't this supposed to be about player development?

I’m not sure if this was the official stance but there was talk about having Adley make all the stops to drum up excitement. Like one of those presidential train tours back in the day. I think that’s a reasonable and not terrible idea, likely won’t stunt his growth and it is a system in a long term rebuild, throw the fans a bone.

I was looking at the forum when you posted and I wasn't when they posted.

Some folks might not believe this but I don't look at OH 24/7.

With the way Elias is running things I don't see anyone hitting FA at 26.

To be fair, the kind of guy that gets promoted at 19-20 isn’t in our system currently, and those guys get pushed to help competitive teams.

I still don’t think it’s fair to judge how Elias will act in the next two years by how he has acted so far. There’s certainly a world where the top 4 prospects are all up next year, though it’s unlikely.

I went on the tour last year and I believe they said the outfield can drain 16 inches of rain an hour. That number sounds insane but I’m fairly certain that’s what they said.

Even if that’s inaccurate the tour is well worth it.

Found this from 2006, says fields can do 7-10 inches. Not 16 but still pretty incredible.

OPACY has fantastic drainage.     But it will be challenging.   3.5 - 4.5 inches of rain expected from Monday night through Tuesday afternoon.

That would have been 2 out so it doesn't really matter if it's 1st and 3rd or 1st and 2nd. They still need a base hit to score. I'm OK with him going halfway there to give them a chance to score 2 if it gets over the OF head.

I’ve heard this before and understand to an extent the rationale but I disagree with it. If you’re on 3rd you score on a passed ball or a flubbed grounder, you don’t necessarily need a hit. Furthermore, if the outfielder drops the ball you’re on 3rd with 1 out anyway, score on a fly ball.

I guess if folks don't know that Angel has a lawsuit claiming MLB has discriminated against him on the basis of race....?

Not sure how someone can be vested enough in baseball to post here and not know about the lawsuit but that's all I got.

Everyone knows he has the lawsuit ongoing, but I appreciate you bringing it up multiple times.

Everyone also knows that Angel is a bad umpire, except, evidently, Angel himself.

The original post by you alleging racism was either a lame wet noodle attempt at some kind of joke or you actually believe it to be true. You frequently peddle contrarianism so I assume the former is the case here. With everything going on in the world today, why make that joke?

Aside from artificial crowd sounds, starting a runner on 2nd in extra innings, where more than half the teams make the playoffs, and the home run champ might hit all of 20 bombs? Yeah, I guess it’s been just fine.

Now you’re moving the goal posts. All of these rule changes make sense given the situation (except the home run complaint which is odd because counting stats always change year over year and really who cares what the home run total is as long as it is proportional to the amount of games played (unless of course you’re in the crowd that thinks the league is too Home run dependent, which it may well be))

Me, I’m disappointed that it took so long but thrilled there has been baseball on TV. It seems you would prefer there not to be, are in some way done with baseball, at least in its current state. If that’s the case, why spend time on a baseball message board?

With the Marlins snd Phillies dropping out for 3 games or more (which is like missing 8 games in a regular season), players certainly getting more anxious, and little good news likely to follow, can we just please put an end to this season already? They tried; it hasn’t worked. Just pull the plug and we all hibernate and hope for better things to come in 2021.

How has it not worked? One team was irresponsible and as of now we have 2 others that have tested positive. This isn’t some crazy widespread thing. Let’s relax and let this play out, more players are wearing masks, as they should and hopefully will be more responsible.

Yeah it doesn’t have ton room for error.  I think they need to revamp the player pool as some suggested to waive 40 man rule.  They should make covid list like 45 day list that player is off the 40 man just doesn’t have to go through waivers. and work with players association on service time issue.

You would think it’s feasible to activate a player not on the 40 man until the point where a 40 man player returns from Covid list.

  14. Lot of lineup juggling so far.

I like Mullins coming in in the 7th or 8th as PR/D replacement. He can be very effective in this role.  He may bring more value than Stewart who I doubt is an upgrade over Mountcastle on the base paths or in the field.
