I will admit that I have not watched a lot of his live  minor league games.   Just highlights.

One thing I’ve learned from watching a bunch of our top guys in the minors, especially in the last few years, is that they all seem to be playing at a different speed than other guys. They look different out there, more confident, do small things differently. Maybe it’s in taking a close pitch, or how they get a better angle on a grounder. It’s hard to explain, but being that you’re a top level former professional athlete I figure you get what I’m saying.

I think she's trying to develop her own vernacular which wouldn't be that bad if she could just describe action fast enough to keep up.

100% that is the problem to a T

  3. Gosh man, Melanie is just so bad at describing the action at the radio. Hays’ double was confusing and she described Kjerstad as getting a break tonight in the lineup section.

Maybe her calling is written sports journalism. She loves to over describe and romanticize.

I get that McCann’s bat is not ideal in the lineup (on the days that he plays). And Mullins struggled really bad for about 6-7 weeks. And Mateo/Urias are no great shakes themselves. But even with all/each of them getting regular to semi-regular ABs, we have the #1 offense in the sport. Like it literally doesn’t get any better.

So how do we “need” another bat. Maybe if Mayo is still here, he comes up at some point and strengthens us even more? But I struggle to understand the idea of us needing more offense, especially when the pitching is this shaky. Do you want Cano (who know looks like he’s lost it) and Perez coming in to try to hold games in the 7th/8th inning only to turn it over to Kimbrel in the 9th in October?

Maybe we defeat SEA/NY and reach a World Series for the first time in over 40 years. How would you like our chances of potentially Ranger Suarez vs Irvin/Kremer/Suarez/Povich for 2 times in a potential 7 game series? Seems like the Phills would have a strong advantage there, no?

I think the concern is that Suarez (and Sanchez) have the advantage due to our LH heavy lineup. Of course pitching is the biggest need, but if you can add a good RH bat to the lineup, you should (not saying it’s Robert, ftr). I don’t think it’s a zero sum game.

Yeah, call me crazy but I don't think his .795 OPS is irreplaceable by a platoon of two young hitters as fine as Mayo and Kjerstad. I'm not usually an agressive call-up guy but Mayo's bat strikes me as special, to the point where might even well exceed whatever Mountcastle is doing, and I think he's beyond ready at this point. Kjerstad strikes me as likely able to put up a pretty decent OPS against righties only, too.

Call it a high upside move, considering that you would get something of value back for Mountcastle, with a pretty low risk overall, IMO, in that you hedge your bets with two fine young hitters like that, in case one has more growing pains than expected, and you also have the platoon factor.

The problem is that A-Mountcastle plays in the field too (and is much better than OHearn) and B-you’re counting on these guys to immediately succeed. None of our prospects in the last couple years (outside Adley maybe) have come up and immediately succeeded.

I'd be shopping Mountcastle, as he might have some value (more so than O'Hearn, surely?). I'm pretty confident a Mayo / Kjerstad platoon can match Mountcastle's offensive output, and between O'Hearn and Mayo at 1st defensively there shouldn't be much drop off.

You want to remove the starting 1B (who is easily on his way to a career best year) from the lineup and replace him with two rookies in a pennant chase year?

If Elias put his glasses on to see the future, I doubt he'd trade for Burnes knowing 3/5ths of the rotation would need TJS.

He may have prioritized a multi year solution, but if he also knew that even with those injuries the addition of Burnes would be part of a team sitting at .620 I bet he would have done it anyway.

Mateo did the same thing against Yankees on the Adley throw out in extra innings.

Absolutely didn’t. Didn’t have his shin in front of the base and had the ball before the runner got there. Go back and watch.

For sure, he's sustained the Lowenstein stuff well enough I am working on making my peace this tournament he will take at bats that will not go to Jackson Holliday or Samuel Basallo as we see what the end of the first half of assured Adley seasons looks like.

If Hyde hits him 3rd or 4th, Hyde will have that tricky 5th inning pinch hitting decision against playoff left handers somewhat often.

It feels in play Coby Mayo's deployment could end up as little as the Roenicke half of it.     You might end up having to let Mayo go late against Emmanuel Clase or Clay Holmes then.

To think about it another way, I think Hyde needs to get OHearn some more at bats vs lefty’s. Part of why Wednesday was such a missed opportunity IMO. OHearn was locked in, let him get a crack at it.

As an Orioles fan I would rather that they not play on Sunday night.  Plus I really do not like the announcing crew, other than Eduardo Perez.

As a fan of the sport having the Yankees-Red Sox as the spotlight game when you have two top five teams playing in a sold-out stadium the same day is a symptom of a longer-term problem MLB can’t seem to fix.  ESPN is probably right that they’d get better ratings but it is because the sport has become too regionalized with a few national brands (Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, maybe Cubs, maybe Phils, maybe Braves).  The sport’s inability to market its biggest stars nationally (especially those that don’t play for the above teams) is maddening.

Okay, I’m done venting for now.

Baseball could use some “in game updates” to stay up on other teams. There should also be nationally televised games on Monday and Thursday when a lot of teams have off.

Would think the upcoming Yankees @ Orioles Sunday game would get moved if not for bad timing. MLB no longer has a Sunday night game before the All Star game.

I kind of enjoy that. Was fun last year all the Sunday 3pm games and then a few days off. Was like the last day of the football season.

They aren't this bad, but they basically all had career years last year and there was some regression due, not to mention, nearly all of the bats they locked up are now past their prime, they are all 29-33, so maybe they are just not going to be that good, 26 is the peak, I hear.

    Where’d you hear that?

This Braves team will get better but they are a great reminder of not assuming anything.

This isn’t close to the team they have had in recent years because of injuries and down years. That happens and we should never taken winning for granted.

Fantastic point. I had friends pencilling the 76ers into multiple finals, but you just never know.

    Their fans travel well, though.

What’s our numbers versus Ragans this year?  The reality is that we’re facing him Game One of a WC series versus KC at OPACY as of now. The Royals could go out and get Jordan Montgomery for Game Two. Why wouldn’t they make a move for a LH SP to throw vs us?

He allowed one hit over 6 the first time and allowed 7 runs and couldn’t get out of the second in the next appearance.

    Fine, trade Holliday.  Or Westburg.

    Henderson, Westburg, Holliday, Mayo, Norby.

Thats five players vying for a combinaiton of 2B/SS/3B, all of which are matriculating more or less simultaneously.

The absolute shrewd logic in trading Henderson vs. the others, his value is maximum since he's already proven himself at the MLB level.  If we believe the other four are all going to be starting calibre MLB'ers, than it might make sense

Yeah, we can DH / 1B one of them but those types of players are fairly easy to find in FA.

Having depth is always nice, but bottom line is that they are going to be more valuable to someone else, than they are to us.

Most likely we don't break the bank on Burnes,  and Means is probably done.  So we'll need a TOR starter next year and for the forseeable future.

Think about it another way, do you think you’re more likely to get appropriate/equivalent value in a trade for Henderson (think about it in terms of WAR) or for one of the other guys?
Here’s the other wrinkle: Gunnar could provide 10 WAR this year. He might go for 7 or 8 in one of those next few years. What are the chances that one of the guys you trade him for will give you that IN this competitive window?

Trading Gunnar isn’t shrewd, it’s fantasy GMing and not committing to being the best.
