She speaks of deflating the clubhouse and alienating the fanbase by trading Mancini, then talks about following the model of the 2011 Orioles.

    A few points:

    - The 2011 Orioles traded Derrek Lee at the deadline for basically nothing except some salary relief, then traded Koji Uehara for Chris Davis and Tommy Hunter. Koji was a fan favorite.  But Davis and Hunter were productive members of playoff teams for the next three or four years. That was a huge win.  Was the clubhouse decimated and the fanbase deflated over that?

    - Will the clubhouse be deflated and the fanbase alienated when Mancini signs with the Mariners or the Rockies or something in December? Or is she suggesting that they resign him to a high-risk, low-reward contract so that he can spend his decline years blocking Mountcastle, Stowers, Rutschman and others at 1B/DH?

    - As far as I know Ghrioli is the only one suggesting they trade Mancini for a warm body and salary relief.  Presumably to disingenuously boost her argument.

It's not been that long since the Orioles' last two "oh my God, how will be ever compete again if we let this 30-something DH/1B walk" contracts in Davis and Trumbo. Have we learned nothing?

I’m guessing you didn’t read the article. In it she mentions a couple times the likelihood of Mancini walking and even infers it would likely be in both parties best interest.

Also, to compare trading Uehara to a potential Mancini trade from a lens of fan impact is silly. Additionally, if the return for Uehara (two legitimate major leaguers already) came close to what a Mancini return might look like this conversation wouldn’t be happening, everyone would be for it. Talk about disingenuous.

He’s the only other guy I feel is worthy of the first pick.  I wouldn’t take him over Jones but I think it’s justifiable.

The caveat to this is how does the team feel about Green and his swing and miss.  If they feel it’s easily correctable, which I assume they would if they took him 1, I’m good with him as well.

I think Green has higher upside than Jones and part of me wants to roll the dice on that.

That would not have been Elias' style. I don't think we see Hall until after the All-Star break and until after he has a sustained success. One amazing start is not going to change his mind. It also doesn't hurt the team's current starting pitching has been good.

I’m hoping they bring him up as a piggyback option for Wells as he nears his inning limit. Control both of their innings at the same time.

Hanifee made his full season affiliate debut tonight for Aberdeen, allowing 1 run in 2.2 IP on 3 hits and a walk.  He threw 50 pitches, 31 for strikes.  Glad to see him on the comeback trail.

Trouble in the first inning and control issues in the 3rd, but a good second with 2k’s and a ground out. Still holding out hope for this guy, give me a heavy sinker out of the BP.

Yeah …but they offset with all the $10 nights, 1990s priced hot dogs, and kids come free with a paying adult. I don’t like the way they are doing it by getting full gate from season ticket holders by discounting to the fair weather or occasional fans and by trying to make it up with ridiculously priced concessions.

im making my 5th or 6th game tomorrow…..we are eating at Maria D’s before going to the stadium and drinking a few in the parking lot to limit what we spend/overspend inside. I’ve never done any of that before but the ridiculous prices have me changing my approach.

Hope they stick with the ‘92 pricing next year! You’re right though, there are definitely affordable ways to see a game (outside of concessions), the team is just playing so well I don’t have anything to complain about.

Ticket prices to Orioles games have not increased, and the number of ticket promotions has increased significantly the last couple of years.  Concessions have increased, but the O’s have returned to a very liberal policy about bringing your own food and non-alcoholic beverages, so concession prices shouldn’t deter anyone who really wants to see a ballgame.

Fair enough, ticket prices haven’t gone up on average but the FCI shows an over $20 increase since 2019.

Anecdotally, and something I can’t find any data on, I do believe the upper deck tickets have increased, while other parts of the stadium have stayed the same or gone down in some cases (bleachers during the week for example). An article from 2018 mentioned $35 being the most expensive seat there, there are $42 seats in the UD for the Yankees series coming up.

Total attendance through 40 games is 626,828.  That compares to 659,618 in 2019, the last full season with unrestricted attendance.   So it’s close, and with the team surging right now, I wouldn’t be too surprised if the second half was a bit stronger than the first.

Ticket and concession prices have gone way up since then. Pricing a lot of us out for consistent visits, unfortunately.

  8. Cal would also adjust his location pitch to pitch, based on what was being thrown, how the pitch prior was executed etc.

The data is massively important but having a smart player make those decisions in real time is invaluable.

  9. Handley has an OPS at .801, for a defense first catcher. If he keeps that up the remainder of the year (or close) and I were a small market/rebuilding GM I’d be all over him. Not terribly hard to stash a backup catcher for a season.

Hall missed a lot of time on the IL but is having a pretty solid, Hall-like campaign: in 41 games he’s hitting .281/.376/.366, and has stolen 16 bases without getting caught.  In the last two years, he’s stolen 42 bases and has been caught one time.   He’s a very efficient baserunner.  I’d love to see the guy carve out a career as a utility player/pinch runner.  He’s always had good OBP skills, there’s just not much power there.

Brian Roberts was my favorite player growing up and Hall fits that mold in some ways, undersized and great on the basepaths.

The positional flexibility of Henderson, Westburg and Vavra will go a long way towards Hall getting a shot with the Orioles, I think. Would be a lot of fun to see him out there making things happen.

Do we have anything out there supporting this?

I mean I guess it could be true but I've not heard anything.

Why do you think he'd be an asset as a coach?

There have been some comments on broadcasts saying explicitly this. Have even quoted Adley has mentioning it.

Kjerstad's swing looks really smooth.  Effortless power.  I don't think he'll need the swing rework that Cowser got/needed.

Of course not. This is the #2 overall pick we’re talking about, not some measly 5th guy taken.

Where's SG to remind everyone that it shouldn't take this long to do a rebuild?  That Elias has sold the fanbase a pack of lies and that anyone who thinks that it's acceptable for the rebuild to take this long is stupid?

I will agree with @Tony-OH, the starting pitching prospects leave a lot to be desired.  But overall, I'm happy with this team so far this year.  There's a lot of baseball to be played and they could crater but if they reach 71 wins which they're on pace to do, that would be good.

We’ve been so abused over the last 4 seasons I’m thrilled with this team. Am excited for each days game, for the most part.

I guess he’s slightly better than Franco was last year. Nevin is -.1 fWAR in 100ish PAs and Franco is -.7 fWAR in 400ish PAs. But with Franco you could hope for some power outbursts. With Gutierrez you could hope for some excellent defense. I don’t see anything that Nevin does well. Nothing to hope for with this guy.

He took those two HBP’s like a champ yesterday.

  15. Lotta talk about Mullins losing his speed, I’m not sure that’s a 31-32 yr old cut off. Brett Gardner (bulkier) similar in size and stayed fast enough to be in the outfield, same with Coco Crisp (RIP to seeing that name). Wonder if there is a size component to speed deterioration.

Either way, I think you have to say yes to the right offer (DL Hall prior to this year plus package), but I’m not eager to make a hole when it seems next year could be a fun one.

To be clear, I don't think anyone gets a MLB play by play job based solely "on merit" they're not doing blind hiring (and if they were the Orioles team would probably be a lot more diverse). We gloss over it when the benefit comes from "network" (aka tends to benefit white males) and instead only label it as an unqualified "diversity hire" when it's a woman/PoC. Don't like her? That's fine. But don't make it out like she was "unqualified" when men with the same (or lesser) qualifications have been hired

Qualifications or not, it’s in the tape.
