The orioles will probably have around 38 guys on the 40 man by the rule 5 draft. If you’re taking more guys off of it then you need to put more players on. There aren’t that many options to add that I see a situation where bubble guys like Zimmerman are left off and bubble guys like Handley aren’t added.

I think the Orioles give them information and ideas, and then let them work on it. They're in the minor leagues to develop, and that means experimenting. Gunnar is a better version of himself, he isn't the same hitter as his first MilB season, and Cowser seems to have increased his power production

I think you want your best overall defensive alignment, so it depends on who is getting the night off. Eg if Mullins is out, you can put Mateo in CF and keep Henderson at SS, if a Urias (or whomever your 3b is) is getting the night off then maybe Henderson slides to 3b and Mateo goes to SS. But jettisoning a guy who was a 3 WAR player this year seems silly. This mostly a factual statement, not an opinion. It might be something Elias considers. As I said think he's on the OD roster if the team thinks he's ready, and there is an everyday spot available, and he won't be if that's not the case. Seems reasonable.

I’d keep Matteo, a cheap 3 WAR player isn’t that easy to replace. If you move him to UI he can also be an extra OF. And the chances of Westburg or Ortiz giving you that much WAR are very slim.

If the orioles think he’s ready, and there’s a spot, he’ll be on the OD roster. If both those conditions aren’t true he’ll be in triple a until he’s both ready and has a spot that said, to many rookies and you split the vote

That plus the new rules on how often a pitcher can throw to a base have massively increased steals in the minor leagues. I think the new rules make Matteo's skill set (top level range and speed) more valuable.

Blue Jays have a double header today, and then a double header next Tuesday against the Rays. I'm not sure I see a double header on Thursday happening, especially since the Jays have to travel. If they can play one today, you might see an afternoon game Thursday, or a DH tomorrow. If neither gets played, I wouldn't be surprised if one of the games is rescheduled for that last series of the year.

Yes, and I suspect at this point in the season players probably prefer the double header and preserving a whole day off. The orioles actually don’t have any days off from sept 15th until the end of the year, which isn’t ideal

Went with a tall friend last night, and we noticed that the upper deck (behind home plate) had roomier seats then the nicer ones behind the dugouts. This is in part due to the lack of cuphders. Last couple of times I’ve gone, I’ve walked up and bought tickets to save on the fees. Saturday night had a much larger walk up crowd, and I wish they had had more ticket windows open, though I understand the staffing issue. $15 saved in fees = beer money

^^ I think Elias is thinking long view, while Hyde is trying to win as many games as possible this month. Elite prospects like Gunnar and Adley were clearly brought up to play, and I don’t think Hyde had a lot of say in whether they played or not (but also they’re excellent, so it’s a moot point). And I also think Elias made the decision to start Hall in Tampa. For more bubble prospects, they clearly have to earn his trust with Hyde defaulting to veterans. Vavra had earned his trust for a little bit offensively (defense is a whole other ball of wax), but when he started slumping Hyde went back to the vets. I would like to see more play for Stowers, but Hyde clearly prefers to play his veterans. Add to that Santander has been excellent, it looks like Mountcastle might be getting on a hot streak, and Hays is the superior defender, and it’s hard to find bats.

He did throw two curves, but he was just blowing them away with fastball/change up no reason to go with anything else. He faced three righties, might have seen the slider if he had faced a lefty. Was really cool to see how happy Adley was for him, and stadium was loud. Really fun game to be at

If you don’t think having Urias at third and Henderson at second improves the defense, I don’t know what to tell you. Stowers hit lefties well in the minors and frankly mckenna has hit better then Aguilar this year, if you wanted to pinch hit. You don’t need to pinch hit to make the defensive substitution though.
