Mateo was one of the best players in baseball the first month. He has elite speed and is great defensively at short. There is no way he is released. I think a bench role and part time player would suit him well. Also, mountcastle hits lefties at a very high level. There is value in that.

Rays are the best team in baseball with the best home record. Did you think we were going to win 8-2?

Ortiz is hitting just as well and plays better defense and is on the 40 man.

Most pitchers rely on talent. They can’t will themselves to pitch good. Being that he’s 35, and last pitched well in 2020, I don’t know that he would be a target just because he pitched well for the orioles earlier in his career.

Lopez was worth negative WAR for the twins last year. You can’t assume he would have pitched better for us. I don’t believe he was the difference in making the playoffs.

I doubt Ortiz plays much if at all against RHP….I hope I’m wrong but I have my doubts.

Mateo has made swing changes from last year to this year. While his current production won’t last, I do think he can be around an 800 ops. That is very valuable especially with his defense. The orioles need to start treating him like he is that player. He is swinging at fewer pitches outside the zone and has always had the raw power and speed. Sure he could revert back to his old ways, but his hot start is not just based on the fact that he is hacking away at everything like he’s done in the past. His plate approach has changed.
