  1. This is why it’s smart to wait until closer to the trade deadline to buy bullpen help. It may be more expensive, but you have a much better idea of what kind of pitcher you’re trading for and what help you need. Relief pitchers are just so volatile from year to year. If we would have tried to trade for Scott during the offseason, we would have had to overpay thinking he could be the same guy as last year, and then we’d be really disappointed with the way he’s pitched so far this year. I enjoy all of these different trade scenarios, but I’d have to see a relief pitcher pitch well this year before I’d be willing to give up anything close to Povich. Povich himself could end up being the help we need in the bullpen later in the season.
  2. Yeah I was born in 85. Yankees will always be far and away the #1 most hated team for me. Royals are probably #4. I’d say Red Sox are #2 and Pirates are #3 but that probably has more to do with Ravens/Patriots and Ravens/Steelers rivalries than the actual baseball rivalries. I just don’t like any New England or Pittsburgh teams in any sport. I don’t like the Mets because they are a New York team, but at least they aren’t the Yankees, so it’s hard to say where I’d rank them. Probably somewhere after our other division rivals and now the Rangers because of how last year ended. I do like the Phillies because I have family who are from the Philadelphia area, but I don’t really have any feelings about the Reds or Dodgers.
  3. I’m pretty sure the team split in two when McGraw left for the National League because he had a feud with the president of the American League. McGraw took the colors and a lot of the players to become the Giants in the National League and then what was left of the team ended up becoming the Highlanders and then the Yankees. At least that’s what the book I have on the history of the Orioles says.
  4. What does everyone think about Tyler Soderstrom or Kyle McCann? I think I might be willing to trade Basallo if we can get someone like Miller plus some decent depth at catcher. We could also maybe add a couple of our younger lower level prospects to the trade. The A’s are probably looking for as much youth as possible and don’t have as much use for these guys who can contribute now. I think depth at catcher will be big for the O’s, with as much as they want to DH Adley. Would love to have a lefty hitting catcher with some power to give Adley more regular days off. The biggest hangup I’d have to trading Basallo is that he could end up being that guy. If he doesn’t look like he can stick at catcher, I’d be more willing to trade him because we already have plenty of 1B/DH type guys.
  5. Best venue in the country. It’ll be a lot of fun. Get there early and park in the upper north or upper south lot if you don’t want to have to walk too far. Upper north lot is usually my go to because there are real bathrooms and you can come in on the side of the stage or the top of the amphitheater. Also, if you don’t want to be in the middle of the crowd and don’t care about being close to the stage, the view from the top rows is pretty cool. Once the sun sets, you can see all of Denver.
  6. Jealous. Probably my favorite band. I’ve been waiting for them to announce a Red Rocks date, but it’s starting to look like that might not happen this year.
  7. Yeah I agree with your thought process on position players vs pitchers. But that’s also why the young cheap guys like Skenes are worth so much. Yeah, he may break, but he’s cheap and you don’t have to give him a ton of money like you would for a free agent pitcher. With our current situation, I’d definitely do Holliday for Skenes straight up. It’s very likely Holliday provides more value during their controlled years, but he’s more easily replaced. If we’re lucky and Skenes and Grayson can have a few healthy years together, I think that gives us a better chance at a world series than 6 healthy years of Holliday.
  8. Depends on what that plus is, but I’d probably do Holliday for Skenes too. We can definitely replace Holliday at 2nd. I think the real question is whether or not the Pirates would actually entertain trading Skenes for anything. Cheap young pitching is probably the most valuable commodity in baseball. They’d probably ask for a lot more than just Holliday.
  9. It will. In June. I feel like the first year we moved to Colorado we had a huge snowstorm in the beginning of May.
  10. I used to have a bunch of good ones on an old MLB the show. My friends and I all made our own players with unique sounds and walk up music. I might have to fire up the PS3 to find some of the other ones, but I know this was one of them:
  11. That’s obviously not the case, but I think some hitters who are known to be patient tend to get the benefit of the doubt on some close pitches, while a rookie may not get that same advantage. I don’t think it should make a huge difference, but we are still talking about a very small sample for Holliday and I’ve seen some pitches that were called strikes that could have been balls. All it takes is a couple extra hits and his stats would look a lot better. We just need to be patient and let him adjust. He’ll be fine.
  12. I think that’s what @Safelykept was saying, but it’s also a mistake to send down Hays this early just because he’s struggling. It doesn’t send a great message to the team.
  13. You still couldn’t bring up both for today without sending down another pitcher because that would put us over 13 pitchers.
  14. Oh I’ll always hate Mussina for going to the Yankees just out of principle, no matter what the reason. You’re probably right that it was just about Angelos being cheap though. If it would have been any other team than the Yankees, I’d probably feel a lot different. I don’t think there are many things I hate more than the Yankees.
  15. Yeah I believe I read that same thing somewhere. I’ve been googling looking for more precise information on the calculation with little luck. But, correct me if I’m wrong, it still seems that no matter what you try to use to create a uniform replacement level player between eras, it still does not account for things like differences in runner speed and the exit velocity of batted balls because we don’t have that data from earlier eras. So, technically, Cal’s comment really isn’t that bad, especially with the explanation that players continue to get faster and stronger. Beltre likely had to field balls at higher exit velocities and throw out faster runners to get outs. Not saying that I necessarily agree with Cal’s comment, but I do agree with the premise in his explanation that players are getting faster and stronger. And maybe I’m just trying to give Cal the benefit of the doubt, but after hearing that explanation I don’t think it’s as bad a comment as I originally thought.
