There's a feature article in this week's Sports Illustrated on Yadier Molina. I think you need a subscription to access it. I have a subscription to the print edition, but had to sign up for the digital edition. I also can't copy text from the article; it seems to be displayed as a pixel image.

The magazine has feature articles on Tanaka and Molina. Because I live in PA, I got Tanaka on the cover. People in "God's country" should find Molina on the cover. There are also Cano and Trout regional covers. I'm not going to attempt to retype anything from the article, but here are a few "nuggets".

Miguel Cabrera says that Molina is the best player in baseball.

Jose Molina says Yadi passed him and Benji "the first day".

Mozeliak says the club might have given Yadi more money if pushed, but he didn't want it; he wanted the team to have more money to surround him with other good ball players.

The exhibition in Memphis was rained out Saturday night, so the Cardinals flew directly to Cincinnati for the season opener Monday night. It's supposed to be on ESPN. I'll be in a meeting in Florida and may miss the early game start, but I set my DVR to record it. If it's a loss, I probably won't watch it.

Molina's blast silences Reds

The Cardinals held on to beat the Cincinnati Reds 1-0 after nearly beating themselves today in the baseball season opener at Great American Ball Park.
Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright walked an uncharacteristic four but struck out nine in seven scoreless innings.
Carlos Martinez fanned Todd Frazier to end the eighth after the Cardinals boxed two double plays in the inning. And closer Trevor Rosenthal fanned two more in the ninth, giving the Cardinals 12 strikeouts for the day, and Yadier Molina's seventh-inning homer off Johnny Cueto stood up for a 1-0 victory.
The win was Wainwright's first opening-day triumph of his career.

MLB Recap

Wainwright (W, 1-0) 7.0 IP, 3 Hs, 4 BBs, 9 Ks, 0.00 ERA

Cincinnati speedster Billy Hamilton struck out four times.

... Cincinnati speedster Billy Hamilton struck out four times.

Almost a 3 hour rain delay and the game just started. Hamilton tried to bunt his way on, but was thrown out by third baseman, Matt Carpenter. Wacha gave up a double to Votto in the bottom of the first, then struck out Jay Bruce to end the inning.

Watch for this kid at the AAA level this year, and perhaps even at the majors.

He's climbed the ladder VERY fast, and he's looking good doing it, according to all that have been watching him.

30 Seconds With Jim Palmer

(By JOE BRESCIA)

Q. Is there a pitcher who reminds you of you?

A. Michael Wacha of the Cardinals has a similar windup. He comes over the top and throws hard. He has the big curveball. We both got to the big leagues very early.

(APRIL 13th)

Edwin Jackson has given out 11 free passes (9 walks and 2 hit batsmen) in 11 innings so far this season.

One of the walks was intentional though, so he essentially has given out 10 free passes in 10 innings.

Michael Wacha has been ...... Michael Wacha.

Michael gave up an unusually high amount of walks by his standards (3 in 7 innings), and he also did not have the best strikes-to-ball ratio (68 Strikes, 46 Balls), but he still pitched a GREAT game.

There's more than one way to get the job done.

    • Did we ? You can’t possibly know that. Apparently, Elias got a player he thought he could fix.  Sorry but I just don’t think Rogers is as good as Irvin with his diminished stuff. I think he’s essentially a throw away. It would be wise to extend Eflin now while we still can. That way the resources used to get him can actually provide some long term value. Dominguez was an ok pickup…I don’t hate the deal. Problem is we needed a closer and he’s isn’t that. Thankfully Bautista is returning and will push him down the depth chart a slot or two. Soto ….Agreed, you bring him back if you can’t find a better option. I expect them to keep him. Otherwise, giving up Seth Johnson with our minors pitching quality shortage looks like a bad decision  Eloy didn’t cost much …. My general thought is pick ups like him didn’t matter beyond how you grade those acquisitions on a team that “Really Wanted to Win”. I question this because none of the guys that we picked up where having good seasons elsewhere. My thoughts are the same for Rivera …. He was a 563 OPS in Miami but got hot here and was a .948 here. His career OPS is .676 so his stint here is probably not repeatable. His projected arb number is 1.4 million so they likely keep him around as a piece and he’s young enough that maybe the change in scenery caused the light to come on.   By the way … here’s a piece from Roch about sone of these guys.   https://www.masnsports.com/blog/taking-another-look-at-orioles-roster-decisions
    • This has to count as one of the, if not the, biggest choke in ALCS history. Up 5-3 with two outs and no one on in the ninth, after you came back from 1-3 in the eight, with a chance to put a lock on the series.
    • Reverse jinx works again! 😆 🥳
    • Clay Holmes' agent could have used the season ending a good couple months ago. It was nice seeing a chink in Luke Weaver's armor.    Gunnar Henderson v. Anthony Volpe is kind of a centerpiece of Mike Elias mostly out-General Managing Brian Cashman the last half decade, but Luke Weaver v. Craig Kimbrel is not a good chapter and flipping those two guys might have changed the 2024 division.
    • I have all sorts of credit cards that charge interest because they provide me with tens of thousands of dollars in free interest. That said, I never pay interest, because I always pay off the balance each month.
    • My friend and I each had flex plans. Him $2500 and me $1300. Neither of us renewed. Are schedules are too difficult to commit to a set plan and the lack of perks for the lower-tier set plans and flex plans make it not worth letting the Os earn the float on our money.
    • I was going to post Ride the Lighting from Metallica but decided not to. I now regret that decision.
