Rainout

Going Underground

There is a chance that the games which would be played outdoors on the east coast this weekend will not impact who the playoff teams are, or their seeding. Possibility for a rain out tomorrow with Toronto, likely rain out Friday and Saturday vs. NYY, and perhaps Sunday as well. If KC doesn't get their act together, Toronto may not need tomorrow's game to clinch the top seed. NYY may not need any of those games to clinch the top wild card. The Mets / Nats series may be the only one which needs to be played.

For the sake of next year's budget, I hope the O's / NYY games need to be played. The O's have already taken a hit with a single admission doubleheader vs. the White Sox in May, will today with the single DH vs. Toronto, likely lost some revenue with the riot games played in TB. Missing three prime games vs. the NYY would make a total of six home games with no revenue (or minimal, in the case of the TB games).

I wonder if they carry some form of insurance covering some of the missed games.

Seems like they should. Every year there are postponed games which aren't made up.

BTW, I corrected the total of missed home games to eight for this season. That's 10 percent of their game day home revenues. As an estimate, if the Orioles average 25k fans per game, with average ticket price~ $25, that's $625k in ticket revenues. Add in concessions, parking, etc., let's say $10 per fan, probably a low estimate. That means the home games missed might account for about $7 million in revenue this season.

Now here's a really cool story.

A Twins fan by the name of Colin drove three hours to Target Field with his eight-year-old daughter Kara to attend Friday night's game. The problem? It was rained out. That stinks. Rainouts are never fun.

Before the game, Colin reached out to Twins president Dave St. Peter on Twitter, asking whether the game will be played. St. Peter said yes:

Obviously that didn't happen. The game was rained out. So, rather than send Colin and Kara out on the long drive home empty-handed, St. Peter and the Twins offered to put them up in a hotel for the night so they could attend Saturday's game:

I guess the weatherman does not know which way the wind blows.

This from the NWS for Baltimore:

If Joaquin directly impacts the D.C. region, it would be in the Sunday to Monday timeframe. The National Weather Service sums up the situation this way: “The weather Sunday and Monday remains highly uncertain with heavy rain…strong gusty winds…tidal flooding and erosion remaining a concern…though it could just turn out to be a partly sunny and breezy day.”

Their team president is St. Peter. Our owner is St. Peter. We win.

Been raining all day, even if they play a game by the 5th or 6th the infield is going to be saturated...if the rain doesn't get worse. Roch said on twitter "...if we have a game tonight." Will MLB and the O's just make up their minds? I have a suspicion they will try to get 5 innings in then call it an official game.

What are y'alls opinions on making the drive up tonight? Supposed to see Wei-Yin's last game but I'm worried the interstate is going to be a nightmare.

If they can't find an open three hour window tonight, MLB should just postpone the game and schedule a doubleheader on Sunday. I don't know why they'll even attempt to get a game in tonight if the conditions are less than optimal. The entire series is essentially meaningless with the Yankees locked into their playoff spot. Why would MLB care if the the Orioles and Yankees end up playing less than 162 games?

They want to be hardheaded it seems and get it all over with. Four hours from game time, rain slated for all night long. There will be no three hour window, they will be lucky to get 5 innings in total in between phases of rain and drizzle. I am shocked they haven't cancelled it already and I'll be astonished if they actually get a game in. Meanwhile, I'm trying to figure out if sitting on the highway for three hours plus while traffic and rain have people frozen in place, with the risk of heavy winds and flooding, all just for a couple innings. I'm just going to have to eat my tickets and say hi to Wei-Yin in a Blue Jays uniform or something.

It is supposed to rain most of the night. 45 and rain or drizzle is not baseball weather. They should try to play a DH after 5 tomorrow but who knows.

Call the Orioles if they do play the game and explain your situation. Maybe they will help you out. Game tonight makes no sense.

    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.
    • Which core players beside Adley Rutschman struggled?
    • The entire commentary on Hyde and the team seems odd but have to admit there does seem to be something off.   Team seemed adrift for most of the 2nd half.  A very talented team went off the rails midway through the season mostly due to core players struggling and rookies not performing or filling in adequately for a few injured starters.    None of the position player trade line acquisitions performed that well.     Hyde seemed in over his head or at a loss on how to correct things, but he must have convinced Elias that he has a plan to fix things.  Curious to see what happens with the coaching staff.
    • And or give up picks for QO pitchers
    • They've averaged 92 wins a year the last 3 years in the most difficult environment in the sport with basically the greatest disadvantages in the sport. Something tells me they know a hell of a lot more about this than you do.
    • Not when they aren't worthy. At minimum the hitting coaches should be el gonezo
    • That is the sign of a stable and successful organization.  Firing people.  Who could argue that?
