Gallardo - Roch: deal is DONE (signed)

I mentioned a while ago that my credible source told me the Orioles had discussions with Latos' camp, but Latos' camp actually mentioned the Orioles notorious physicals during the discussions "multiple times" and talks cooled after that.

Yep. Told everyone that he was worried about the physical Drove his own price down, IMO. I think it cost him a lot of money.

I really people would start looking at game logs and not just flat out stat lines.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.cgi?id=gallayo01&t=p&year=

He got lit up in 4 games in the second half, 3 of them back to back to back after All-Star break. 4 games and none of those 4 games did he give up more then 5 runs. But 20 ER in 19 IP, will take you from a 2.74 ERA to a 3.42 ERA.

It will also kill your WHIP cause in those 4 games he gave up 30 hits and 10BB. That will take you from a 1.32 WHIP to a 1.416 WHIP.

Ask Chris Tillman what 4 games can do to your WHIP and ERA as it was the Blue Jays who destroyed his numbers last year. Tillman pitched a good game opening day... then ran into the buzzsaw that was the Blue Jays, 3 starts against them in a Month.

He wasn't all that good in September either... and perhaps the biggest thing is, he lasted six innings only twice after the all star break. Eleven times before the all star break.

Yeah...but he only pitched 6 innings in a game twice after the AS break. That's not very encouraging.

And Rangers were in a playoff race. He left alot of those games in the 5 inning with runners on. So it was about protecting the lead and his pitch count was in the 90s. Nothing unusual with that.

I said he had 4 bad games. One of those was in September. You are not a 4 WAR pitcher if you are injured (shoulder issues).

I interpreted it as the physical.

I think there may be some truth to the theory that they wanted to hold on Gallardo's physical to make sure they also had Fowler in the fold.

That maybe the concerns over the shoulder were enough to make them hesitant to give up pick 14, but willing to roll the dice for pick 28.

I'm hoping that's the case, and that the delay on Gallardo was just a false alarm. I know he's not an ace, but he still makes this rotation much more solid and gives us much better depth. I really hope this deal still gets finalized.

Is it possible that they are delaying making this official because they need to cut 2 players and they are trying to make a deal?

I predict Gallardo's signing will be official in the next 1-2 days. This is just the Orioles doing due diligence on an expensive deal for a pitcher. I trust they know what a healthy/unhealthy shoulder looks like, but I also think this is as good as done.

Ubaldo was signed (at least it was reported as "official pending a physical") on 2/17/14 and announced by the team on 2/19/14.

So it's been 1 day longer than the Jimenez physical. I'll start to get worried once we enter Balfour territory.

Very excited to see him and Fowler in Oriole uniforms for the next 3 years! :D

Anything is possible for a team that sent Wei-Yin Chen to A-ball for roster maneuvers and was once banned from entering Korean baseball stadiums.

Edit: Also, hey Dad.

    • We played all our Saturday games at home at 4pm. That should help us.  I don’t know if that was the full reason we made the switch this year, but it had to factor in. We didn’t do so well in the day games last year in the playoffs.  Also, don’t be surprised to see McCann get a big hit in game 1 and possibly just start this entire series versus the speedster Royals.  Let’s go. We owe these “guys” big time paybacks even if it’s 10 years later.
    • They also smacked him around for 7 ER on 9 H in 1.2 innings. He can be beaten, though he certainly had a great September.
    • I understand why posters would want to avoid Skubal in a game 1, but the Royals starters are not going to be a cakewalk. Probably a deeper starting staff with Ragans, Lugo and Wacha.
    • Interesting article …. Pretty surprising stat with all the guys that we lost to injury       https://www.masnsports.com/blog/orioles-made-it-through-rough-t
    • The same thing was happening was MacDonald was the DC and when Wink was the DC, that makes me put most of the blame on Harbaugh
    • dWAR is just the run value for defense added with the defensive adjustment.  Corner OF spots have a -7.5 run adjustment, while CF has a +2.5 adjustment over 150 games.    Since Cowser played both CF and the corners they pro-rate his time at each to calculate his defensive adjustment.
    • Just to be clear, though, fWAR also includes a substantial adjustment for position, including a negative one for Cowser.  For a clearer example on that front, as the chart posted higher on this page indicates, Carlos Santana had a +14 OAA — which is the source data that fWAR’s defensive component is based on. That 14 outs above average equates to 11-12 (they use different values on this for some reason) runs better than the average 1B.  So does Santana have a 12.0 defensive value, per fWAR? He does not. That’s because they adjust his defensive value downward to reflect that he’s playing a less difficult/valuable position. In this case, that adjustment comes out to -11.0 runs, as you can see here:   So despite apparently having a bona fide Gold Glove season, Santana’s Fielding Runs value (FanGraphs’ equivalent to dWAR) is barely above average, at 1.1 runs.    Any good WAR calculation is going to adjust for position. Being a good 1B just isn’t worth as much as being an average SS or catcher. Just as being a good LF isn’t worth as much as being an average CF. Every outfielder can play LF — only the best outfielders can play CF.  Where the nuance/context shows up here is with Cowser’s unique situation. Playing LF in OPACY, with all that ground to cover, is not the same as playing LF at Fenway or Yankee Stadium. Treating Cowser’s “position” as equivalent to Tyler O’Neill’s, for example, is not fair. The degree of difficulty is much, much higher at OPACY’s LF, and so the adjustment seems out of whack for him. That’s the one place where I’d say the bWAR value is “unfair” to Cowser.
