Odds are really good it is.

I bet some industrious soul could make a good guess who the player was.

Go to town, here's a list of the players who debuted in 2012: https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/MLB/2012-debuts.shtml

He's an infielder who retired last year, played for three organizations and had 400 days of service time.    I thought maybe it was Charlie Culbertson, but he's still playing in the minors.

Still playing in the minors (Rangers).

Only name I found that matches all criteria is Munenori Kawasaki.

He's not a current All Star

Huffington post.

Do you trust a writer for the HufPo to keep on such things?

I'm more concerned it was a Japanese player,  It just seems unlikely to me that is who they would cultivate contact with.

Of course I'm not ruling out the names you mentioned, not at all.

Or Kawasaki isn't the right guy at all.

Yeah, I don't think it was him. He didn't retire last year, he was released by the Cubs in March.

I didn't even realize he was still playing. I actually thought he had been out of the game longer than last season.
