27 of the 55 players that were paid by the O's in 2017 will be gone from the 40 man roster

That is 49% of the players that were paid by the O's major league club.   It may not be a rebuild but it certainly seems like a mass exodus. (If Castillo opts out)

Over 71M of the 170.5M  earned this past season will be to players that will no longer on the O's 40 man roster once major and minor  league  free agency occurs 6 days after the World Series is done.   All but Daniel Alvarez will be out of the O's organization.  That is  41% if the dollars paid by the O's in 2017.   These players will be gone by free agency, trades, and releases/DFAs. ($ are my best guess from the information available)

Here is the list:

14m Hardy -FA

13.5m Jimenez - FA

10.05m Tillman - FA

8.75m Miley - FA

7m Smith - FA

6m Castillo - Opt out to free agency

2.708m Kim - Traded to Philly

2m Gallardo - Traded to Seattle

1.8m Flaherty - FA

1.438m Hellickson - FA

1.125m Nuno - FA

1.051m Jackson - Released

.87m Tejeda - FA

.85m Gentry - FA

.529m Giavotelli - Released

.403m Pena - FA

.395m Janish' - Retired

.112m McFarland - Termination pay

.108m Ondrusek - Termination pay

.091m Pedro Alvarez - FA

.085m D Alvarez DFA  (still in the O's minors)

.077m Wilson - FA

.056m Aquino - FA

.050 R Rodriguez - FA

.026m Verrett - FA

.020 Washington - FA

.006m Drake - Traded to the Brewers

Some may be re-signed.   I can see Gentry and Tillman being signed.  Who knows if the O's will re-sign any of the minor leaguers that are FAs.

And how many of those does anyone really want to have back? Tillman at the right price, maybe?

Huge burden off the payroll.

Replacement sake, for replacement sake, doesn't always work.

Beckman was a huge find, but how many others are more like De aza or Parra?

Okay, maybe Pena, too. But seriously, most of these guys were non (or even negative) contributors, and shouldn't be hard to replace. Gentry's skill set could be replicated elsewhere - and you might even get a guy who can hit?!

And is calling him Beckman a thing now?

Sorry, was not intentional.

Pena was okay, minor league depth is fine.

utility guys are not always easy to find, if they could play great defense and hit, they would be everyday starters.

As you noted, many of these guys were traded or cut during the year and were already gone by season's end.  Can't really see us missing any of them.  Smith and Castillo are the only two that have any value and both have negatives as well, mainly in the defensive side of the game.
