Cardinals minor leaguers get 50-game steroid suspensions

OK, it was on their Dominican summer league team, which might be stretching it to call them "Cardinals minor leaguers", but it's still an embarrassment.

The Washington Post did a feature a few years ago which found steroids use to be endemic among Dominican teen agers seeking to win professional baseball contracts. I wonder if anything has changed? (If anyone knows where to find that article, I'd appreciate a link; I've had no success with google.)

I wonder if this testing in the Dominican summer league is new, and if there are a bunch of other positive test results to be announced?

I didn't find that particular article, but here is one that references the Washington Post report:

LatinAmericanPost

A blurb from the article:

The deaths seemed to underscore the desperation that is the context for baseball in the Dominican Republic, where a major league contract holds the prospect of almost unimaginable riches for a teenaged boy in a small Caribbean nation with a monthly per-capita income of $503. 'It's where poverty and the opportunity for huge wealth meet face to face, with all the consequences that can bring,' said John H. Seibel, an adviser to Major League Baseball who has lived in the Dominican Republic for three decades.

Braulin has an ERA of 12.47 - so the drugs are pumping his....ERA up eh?

Pena a bit better at 4.16 ERA

Beras is really enjoying great results .105/.171/.276 - those numbers would make Izturis blush.....
