Trace Bright
Throws: RHP
Age (as of Jun 30th): 22
2023 Level: /A+/AA

Pitches (current/future value)
Fastball: 50/55
Curveball: 40/55
Change: 40/50
Slider: 40/45
Command: 35/45

Most Likely Future Role: Reliever
Ceiling: Back of rotation starter

Bio: Lack of stuff is not the problem when it comes to this 22-year old, 6-4 righthander. In his first full season after being selected in the 5th round of the 2022 draft, he struck out the most batter per 9 innings (13.3/9) among any Orioles minor league pitcher who threw at least 55 innings. Bright brings a 93-95 MPH fastball that can touch 96 on occasion that has good arm side run and garner swings and misses. He offset that with a big 77-79 mph hard breaking curve that has plus downward movement. He adds in a high 80's slider/cutter and an emerging change that actually can miss left-hander bats.

Unfortunately, his command is not good on any of this pitches especially the curveball and change. The curveball could be a real weapon if he could land it for strikes but batters, especially Double-A batters, were able to ignore the pitch. Same thing with the change that really can flash solid average or even plus, but again, he has to be able to throw them for strikes. He uses way too many pitches to get batters out by going deep in counts way too often. His 5.1 BB/9 is way too high and despite being hard to hit (.205./.321/.328/.649) his combined 1.31 WHIP was too high.

Bright has the stuff of a starter but the command of a reliever and he'll need to improve that to have any chance of sticking as a starter. He does have a nice floor of a major league reliever who can miss bats though.

Seems like he has a high ceiling if he could garner some control. Probably closer potential as a 2-3 pitch guy if he is able to figure out the curve and develop the change. Gotta love the k rate

Seems like this can be said about literally hundreds of minor league pitchers.

Sure but his stuff sounds better than Baumler.   I like to hear mid 90’s not 92-93.   If you get enough Chayce McDermotts and Trace Brights you might find a Kyle Bradish in there somewhere.

    • It would be foolish to discount Burnes value to this team. He needs to be brought back unless the cost becomes absurd.
    • Bradish likely misses most of 2025
    • I do get tired of his post game press conferences where he praises the other team's pitching profusely. He definitely isn't fiery, that's for sure. But having said that, he likely isn't getting fired. But, his seat is getting pretty warm and if we don't take the next step in the playoffs next year, he's likely gone.  As much as some of his in game decisions drive me crazy, he isn't the one taking the feeble at bats. The three pitching coaches ( I think they call one guy the offensively coordinator or something) need to go.
    • One thing I noticed and don’t care for is…….” We have Bautista coming back so we don’t need to sign All-star FA closer “  and “ since we have Elfin coming back we dont need resign Burnes “ and “ we have Bradish returning from injury so why we need another FA starter ? “  My point is that we can’t count on Bautista , Bradish , Wells , Means & others to return and pick up where they left off .  I advocate Elias to strike hard and fast during upcoming Free Agency season .
    • Hey man, It breaks my heart that the O’s destroyed our season of hope. Hyde’s got to go. Watching those post-game excuses and lack of fire is not good for inspiration - club house or fans!. Pathetic. Call out stuff, not play victim. Apparently every team had amazing pitching! (Eye roll). A re-set is going to happen. A few more guys getting experience, a few guys going away, and revamping that horrible bullpen. Easy moves: let Santander walk, don’t waste money on LT contracts for SP - even Burnes, get Alex Bregman! , get more speed!
    • Division is going to be tough next year.  Rays have reloaded, Red Sox have a new core in place and will likely supplement with a big Fa splash or two, and the Yankees will continue to be the Yankees. Ultimately O’s success or lack thereof will rest on the improvement of their young positional talent, but seems like we need to add some kind of weapon vs left handed pitching.  And will need to either replace or resign Burnes, not something easy to do without significant financial investment.
