Delmarva earns series win in blowout fashion

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds pounded the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Sunday afternoon for an 11-5 victory in the series finale. The Shorebirds (19-17) broke out offensively in the rubber match for the road series victory.

The offensive onslaught began in the third inning. With the bases loaded, Conor Bierfeldt punched a double to clear the bases for a 3-0 lead. Two more runs scored in the frame, helped across by two errors from Greensboro. Jared Breen lined an RBI single for a 5-0 advantage.

Back-to-back home runs by Greensboro briefly tightened the score in the fourth inning. Justin Twine hit a two-run opposite field home run, and Ryan Aper immediately followed with another shot over the right field fence.

With the lead down to 5-3, Delmarva immediately responded with a rally of their own. Another error sparked the fifth inning, and Elier Leyva capitalized with an RBI single. Jonah Heim hooked a two-run double to the right field corner, as another potential run was cut down when Jared Breen was thrown out at home plate.

Delmarva cracked double digits with three more runs in the sixth. Jomar Reyes roped a two-run double to right, and Cam Kneeland sent an RBI single up the middle.

Up 11-3, the result was never in doubt after the sixth inning. Greensboro scored twice with two outs in the ninth inning to bring the final score to 11-5.

Bennett Parry delivered a quality start with three runs allowed in six innings, picking up his third win. Mike Burke pitched well in relief until allowing two runs while in search of the final out. Garrett Cortright closed out the win for Delmarva. All nine Shorebirds batters recorded at least one hit in the victory, while the 11 runs were one shy of the team’s best mark on the season.

NATHANS DOUBLE GIVES KEYS FIFTH HOME SERIES WIN

FREDERICK IMPROVES TO 7-0 IN ONE-RUN GAMES AT NYMEO FIELD

FREDERICK, Md.- The Keys used a seventh inning rally and five shutout innings from the bullpen to win the rubber match against the Potomac Nationals 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Nymeo Field. It was the club’s fifth home series win of the year, as the orange and black improved to 13-4 in contests played in Frederick. A loss by Wilmington on Sunday also allowed the Keys to move back into a tie for first in the Carolina League North standings.

After managing just one run off Nationals starter Reynaldo Lopez, the Keys found their groove against Nationals lefty Justin Thomas. With one out in the inning, Johnny Ruettiger successfully bunted for a base hit to bring up T.J. Olesczuk. Thomas (0-3) would jump ahead in the count 0-2, but the Keys nine-hole batter lined a double down the third base line to set up runners at the corners. It was Olesczuk’s first Carolina League hit.

Forced to bring the infield in, Tucker Nathans laced a double to right to plate Ruettiger and Olesczuk and give the orange and black the lead to stay. The former Fairfield star finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. It was his ninth multi-hit game of the year and his third multi-RBI contest.

From there, Jon Keller would close the door, striking out two and giving up just two singles to pick up his second save. He would be preceded by Dennis Torres, who earned his third win of the season thanks to three shutout innings of one-hit baseball. Celebrating his 25th birthday, it was Torres’ (3-1) second win of the season at home.

Potomac drew first blood in the top of the second inning as they took an early 2-0 lead. John Wooten led off with a walk, Jimmy Yezzo reached on a single, and Brandon Miller walked to load the bases for Craig Manuel. The P-Nats catcher would ground a ball up the first base line to bring in the first run, before Narciso Mesa followed suit with a bounce out to the left side.

The Keys struck back in the third inning plating a run to cut the deficit in half. Nathans reached on a one-out single then advanced to second on a base hit by Jeff Kemp. Drew Dosch grounded into a force out to put runners at first and third for Trey Mancini. Ending the day 3-for-4, the Keys cleanup man also collected an RBI with a single to right.

The run was the first allowed by Lopez in a Carolina League game, snapping a string of 13.2 scoreless innings. Despite receiving a no-decision, the right-hander turned in his second straight quality start, surrendering the one run over six innings. He gave up five hits, walked two and struck out four. Tagged with the loss, Thomas allowed two runs in 0.2 of an inning.

Frederick starter David Hess also did not factor into the decision, going four innings and allowing two runs on four hits. Walks were problematic for Hess, who handed out five free passes, a career-high.

Bowie, Md. - Richmond jumped on the Baysox early, scoring four first inning runs and eight total runs in the first three innings in a 9-4 win over Bowie Sunday afternoon to take the four game series. Making his first start of the season for the Baysox, Terry Doyle struggled, allowing eight runs on 11 hits in three innings.

Richmond's second baseman Kelby Tomlinson led off the game with a bunt single, followed by another bunt single by Rando Moreno. As Tomlinson tried to take third on the bunt, Doyle threw to catcher Rossmel Perez who was covering third base. Perez dropped the throw and was charged with an error after Tomlinson was declared safe to leave runners on first and third. Designated hitter Mac Williamson knocked in the first runs of the game with a double to center field and Mitch Delfino followed with a ground out that advanced Williamson to third. Right fielder Devin Harris then singled to bring Williamson home before Myles Schroder followed with another single. Javier Herrera flew out to center field to move Harris to third and Daniel Carbonell brought him home with a line drive single to center field to give Richmond a 4-0 lead after the first inning.

Richmond struck again in the top of the second on a single by Moreno followed by Williamson's third home run of the season, putting the Flying Squirrels up 6-0.

The Baysox woke up in the bottom of the second thanks to a single from Sharlon Schoop and an RBI double from right fielder Quincy Latimore, making the score 6-1.

Richmond furthered their lead again in the third inning. Herrera hit a ground rule double to left field and Eliezer Zambrano hit the Flying Squirrels' second home run of the game to give them an 8-1 lead.

The Baysox bit into Richmond's lead again, in the bottom of the third. Ozzie Martinez led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Richmond's Jack Snodgrass. Davis hit a single to put men on first and second and Chris O'Brien then singled to load the bases before Schoop singled to bring Martinez home making the score 8-2.

Ben Rowen came in for Doyle in the top of the fourth, but the Flying Squirrels kept the runs coming. Williamson singled to start the inning, leaving him a triple short of the cycle, but was forced out at second on the next play by Delfino. Harris hit his 11th double of the year to bring home Delfino and give Richmond a 9-2 lead.

After the fourth, Rowen pitched three scoreless innings for the Baysox and four innings total. He was replaced by Ashur Tolliver in the eighth inning who pitched a scoreless final two innings.

The Baysox scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth as Richmond reliever Stephen Johnson struggled. Ronarsy Ledesma hit his first Double-A single to lead-off the bottom of the inning. Latimore followed with a single and Johnson walked Esposito to load the bases with no outs. Martinez hit into a fielder's choice to force Ledesma out at home, but the bases remained loaded, now with one out. Johnson issued another walk to Glynn Davis to bring in the Baysox third run of the game. Richmond then replaced Johnson with Joan Gregorio, in hopes he would be able to close out the game. Mike Yastrzemski hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Esposito, which would become the final run of the game. Gregorio closed out the game with a pop out from designated hitter Chris O'Brien, and the Flying Squirrels took game four of the series with a score of 9-4.

Richmond starter Jack Snodgrass earned the win after throwing seven innings and giving up two runs on seven hits.

Indianapolis used a four-run sixth inning to top the Tides 9-5 Sunday afternoon from Victory Field.

The Tides pounded out 11 hits in the contest, with Dariel Alvarez leading the way with three knocks and an RBI. Everth Cabrera added two hits and a run scored in his third rehab appearance with the Tides.

Elih Villanueva (0-1) took the loss in his Norfolk debut after allowing seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits in five innings of work. He walked one and struck out one as Norfolk dropped the series three games to one.
