  1. You and me get that. But we aren’t trying to convince ourselves that our dad’s $173M project is maybe not as bad as the whole town thinks. And telling ourselves “if we can eke out another 10M of production at least that’s something, and we didn’t waste the whole thing.”
  2. I get that, I’m not really saying they are in the top 1% or something, just countering that basically the entire OH says “Come on, it’s a sunk cost!” Just to say I think that they probably understand that just fine, but $70M is a lot of money to throw away. It’s easy for me and you to throw away that money, doesn’t really matter to us. If Davis can put up 1.5 WAR in the next few years (maybe a reasonable hope) they might feel like they got something out of it, even if it’s not actually meaningful to the team.
  3. These people aren’t stupid. Lou went to Hopkins, John went to Duke. Dad’s money can only get them so far, they surely had at least minimal competence. If a couple 100 people on OH know what sunk cost means they do. It’s just a helluva lot harder when it’s $70M of your own money that you are just throwing away. Pretending that he might turn it around and be worth 1 or so WAR per year, justifying a few million of the investment per year, is probably easy to do when faced with the other option of just burning up numerous bags of money for nothing. It’s unfortunate but we just have to wait for them to give in.
  4. The Posey plan makes sense--catch 100-120 games, 1B and DH to get a total of 140-150.
  5. You just say that cause he’s an 11th round pick. If we picked him instead of Brian Gonzalez you’d love him.
  6. Yeah, people like Harvey because he’s talented and has great stuff. They give him lots of chances because when healthy his stuff looks great and if he can stay healthy his stuff will likely play in the majors, at least as a reliever. And perhaps the patience is starting to be rewarded. Oh, and he was a first round pick because...he’s talented and has great stuff. So these things aren’t mutually exclusive. Even so, at this point in development it’s all about where you are now. How long did anyone care about top ten pick Billy Rowell? Or Matt Hobgood? Not that long to be honest once they showed they weren’t going anywhere. Sure they got some extra press but no one really cared.
  7. No, for a while it determined World Series home field advantage. For some crazy reason.
  8. They get paid for each day on the roster.
  9. Right, my impression was he liked him in general, maybe not here. He had Sisco ranked around 50something.
  10. I don’t think we need to be in a big rush here to bump folks just for the sake of bumping them. I’d like to see Eshelman and Wojo get more starts, but we’ve had 14 starters so far. There are going to be plenty of opportunities in the second half. Decide based on roster needs, options, etc., not just cause “we know what he is already.”
  11. I think the Bobby Bo deal gives him 8% interest. Not too shabby. Davis is just straight deferral with no interest.
  12. If he puts up 7 WAR and wins 15 games on a 45 win team he def gets top 5 Cy Young. He probably gets MVP votes. Sportswriters eat that kind of stuff up, it basically writes a whole column for them.
  13. Often doesn’t matter. SP winners this decade: Fulmer had 159. deGrom had 140. Fernandez and Hellickson were over 162. But sure the more he pitches the better, he’s going to be kind of anonymous on this team so exposure helps.
  14. That was tongue in cheek but I get it a grudge is different. I didn’t remember that about Bundy thanks. Definitely proven wrong there, hopefully Grayson does the same. Law was always very high on Sisco if I recall. I think he’d rather be right scouting-wise than some weird sticking it to the O’s that doesn’t really do anything.
  15. So you’re saying if you disagree with things PA did you should give the sons the benefit of the doubt. ? Frankly, if he has something against the Orioles, I can see him not caring about the regime change. But I’m not that sure he has something against the Orioles either. Usually this org has deserved most of its criticism, and what prospect was he low on that proved him wrong? Doesn’t really matter anyway, guys will either perform or they won’t.
  16. Jon Shepherd tweeted yesterday that international guys usually get like 30% more than a similar draft pick. Who knows? I wonder if that’s true of the top guys. Seems like Jassssson would be in the top of the 1st round discussion if he’s really switch hitting Trout. The cap probably impacts things at the top.
  17. I know you know this but...No one will know unless they release a total or the Venezuelan players’ bonuses leak. They have not leaked as far as I know.
  18. If "Mountcastle" and "Davis" are ever comparable enough to even end up in the same sentence God help us all. (Unless that sentence is "Mountcastle has replaced Davis on the roster.")
  19. If you call Frederick rehab and don't count it, Diaz had a 232/319/512 in Bowie with 6 HR, 22 RBI. Even better after his first week back from June 12th-30th 263/364/632 with 6 HR and 20 RBI. That's a lot of caveats, but it was a weak organizational month so could be part of the discussion at least...funny Sisco's 1150 OPS wasn't enough in May.
  20. Armstrong was DFA'd 2 months ago. Traded for international slots this winter. ERA and FIP both over 4. Smith was traded for slots 4 months ago. Now he has an OPS+ under 100 and a negative WAR. I don't see how we can trade those guys for anything. The others, sure, they are the guys that might have value, but it's hard to say if any other team is going to value them.
  21. You should be able to plug a guy in from another department to fill in if needed. I hear Davis is going to be selling cotton candy next home stand, he’s not that busy during most games anyway.
  22. That’s just like gold glove caliber!
  23. He’s really settled down. Glad his 1st ML start didn’t turn disastrous.
  24. Yeah, with Means you can quibble with things like innings pitched or FIP and whether he can sustain it, but he's really been one of the best pitchers in the league this year. It seems clear from his posts that atomic thinks the All Star game is all about "stars." So things like name recognition and prior year performance and cultural phenomenons matter. Cal with his 594 first half OPS in 2001 was probably fine, as it was basically a lifetime achievement award for a superstar. This is a defensible position I suppose, there aren't any official criteria and people can vote for whomever they want for whatever reason they want. But most people think it should be about rewarding 1st half performers, and as usual atomic thinks his position is the only valid one. For me, I am happy for Means and think he deserves it. I think Mancini has had a fine year but can't say he was snubbed. Even if someone doesn't like Abreu one could argue for a couple others instead before Mancini. And you can't really complain that the worst team in the league doesn't have multiple All Stars.
