  1. As far as I can tell, we have gotten the following that are on the 40 man from either a waiver claim or trade following a DFA. 1/3 of the roster. No reason to ignore a way to get people into the system. Shawn Armstrong Richard Bleier Miguel Castro Paul Fry Chandler Shepherd Tayler Scott Hanser Alberto Renato Nunez Jace Peterson Jose Rondon Rio Ruiz Pedro Severino Dwight Smith Jr.
  2. This was your analogy, but fine, carry on being the only one who believes the best catching prospect in baseball shouldn't really catch.
  3. It's more like the off-roading is a race you really want to win. The Ferrari is way better than the Corolla, so you have a better chance of winning. And you only have control of and responsibility for the Ferrari for the weekend that you're racing, if the Ferrari is broken then after that it's not your problem anymore. Also, you don't buy the Ferrari if you aren't going to open it up and use it like you're supposed to use it. If you're going to just drive it in 35 MPH zones because you're afraid of breaking it then you might as well get the Vaughn model, and you probably could have saved some money.
  4. If he’s a plus catcher like they say he is then he should obviously spend most of his time there. You just don’t find a plus catcher plus hitter that often. I’m fine with the Posey plan of having him play 30 or so games at 1B/DH. Keep him fresh but keep him in the lineup.
  5. How come everyone gets initials except Luis “F.U.” Figueroa? Seems like it’d fit with the Richard Head story at least.
  6. The 1986 Cardinals had 58 home runs, led by Andy Van Slyck’s 13. And that’s in many of our lifetimes. The Yankees hit 47 this June. I don’t even know if they were terribly low (probably), I just went there due to RBI Baseball (which was 1987 for the Cardinals, they had 94 HR).
  7. Why is Villar such an obvious non-tender for any team? Assuming he doesn’t fall apart he’ll have been worth 2+ wins 3 out of 4 years, and is still under 30. A win is worth like $7-8M these days? I understand the Orioles have no need to spend money on a guy like that, but he isn’t the worst guy to have on a 1/7.5 contract as a fringe starter on a fringe competitor, assuming he goes somewhere else by Wednesday. I guess there’s not much upside even if one thinks he’ll have a little excess value. And too much chance that he goes back to replacementish hurts his value such that he may be had for more like 1/4 or 5 after being non-tendered? I don’t know. I was surprised Schoop was non-tendered too and he ended up doing alright.
  8. If they think he’s going to be a reliever then that’s what he should be doing.
  9. Dan Straily. Dwight Smith Jr. I think both were talked about before we actually got them.
  10. Whenever it happens the game is already out of hand, so I don't see a need. Looks like the Rays did it 5 times last year and the Cubs 6 times. Didn't find any others over 5, but I didn't see an obvious way to search so I didn't look much. Just figured Maddon and the Rays think outside the box.
  11. Smith has almost 6x the MLB PAs as Stewart. I’m fine with giving guys chances, especially this year, but OF is one place where we have several possible contributors and I’d like to see more of them.
  12. Oh how in God’s name did Ruth and Gehrig ever manage in Yankee Stadium with its ridiculous dimensions?
  13. I don't see why it's babying or what it hurts. If he was a freshman in college he'd be pitching once a week, no one complains they are being babied. See Nick Lodolo's game log--generally 6 days rest. https://gofrogs.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5173
  14. Yeah, it's 84. 50 (base) + 22 (22 outs) + 6 (completed 5th, 6th, and 7th innings) + 10 (strikeouts) - 2 (for 1 hit) - 2 (for 2 BB).

    No Statue

In an alternate reality where Tito Landrum strikes out and Cy Young winner LaMarr Hoyt pitches a gem in game 5 Cal doesn’t get a statue?
  16. People on this board, which is full of people smarter than the average fan, still often cite BA as meaningful. Not as much as 10 years ago, but it still happens. Heck at least one person was complaining because we sent out the guy who led the team in Spring BA. This isn’t for us. This is for the casual fan. There are a lot of them. So get over yourself.
  17. I don’t know if your search catches these, but looking on bb-ref at old box scores in the past I’ve seen quite a lot that said batted ball out: no further information or something sorta like that. I guess 30s data is spotty.
  18. I believe it’s very much correlated with HR rate. I do think it’s still low 70s even today Back to Sisco, the 2019 Orioles are so bad at giving up homers that his personal break even # is probably one of the highest in history. Outs are even more precious when any batter might hit one out! Hopefully in a few years both (1) the O’s HR rate has gone way down, and (2) AR is getting the bulk of time behind the plate.
  19. Stolen bases are great. The problem is outs are really terrible, so even being successful 80% of the time doesn’t buy you much over just staying put all the time. Especially as home runs become more prevalent.
  20. His wOBA is .347 and wRC+ is 125. Both better than Ripken who is 2 years older at a lower level but is being promoted. Shrug.
  21. Different regime of course, but Stewart was also promoted from Delmarva to Frederick at age 22 for seemingly no good reason, and it seemed to wake him up. Maybe that’s a thing that’s done sometimes. Like, if you’re gonna amount to anything it’s about time you start moving up, so let’s see what you can do, if you fail you fail. Like Frobby said, I’m fine with Hall just getting more regular time at SS and keeping up the success for now. I don’t mind promoting aggressively but he will need time to grow into some power anyway.
  22. Everyone knows Corn would rather extend him. Think 7/$32M gets it done? Albies got 35 but he’s probably a bit better than Martin.
  23. Yeah fielder's choice is a head scratcher. That implies that the batter should have been retired if the fielder had attempted to make a play on him. That's not at all what this is. It seems clear that it should be equivalent to a HBP, guy gets on base due to a single bad pitch, but I guess they don't want to make a new stat for something that may only exist during half a season in a single league.
  24. To add to this, for the year his wOBA is .366 and wRC+ is 138. Both of those are very good. If you squint (and focus on the time since his rehab) you can almost see the .407 and 152 from last year on the Dodgers, when everyone had him as a great prospect.
