If hitters were far more successful you'd have to be a fool to pick a pitcher unless there was a significant gap in talent. We don't have evidence that has been the case. That's an exaggeration. Tons of hitters also don't pan out. Even the ones viewed as sure things like Torkelson and Johnson struggle.

My understanding is that saves are something that arbiters look at. If you reduce the number of saves an arbitration eligible pitcher accumulates it should be an advantage to the team. Also, if you are the only team acting in this fashion it isn't the "new normal".

I suggested that ages ago to help mitigate arbitration raises for closers.

I strongly disagree that they would be better off getting four fringy guys over one guy that has a reasoanble chance to become an impact player. No offense to Stowers but right now he's tracking like a guy you can snag off the waiver wire.

Any guy in a ML bullpen should be able to convert a 3 run save at a very high rate. It's not a noteworthy task to get three outs before giving up three runs.

They said they would ask for Stowers and Norby. Not grudgingly accept, ask. Me, I'd ask for Basallo. Work my way down from there. It honestly sounds to me like someone trying to trade spare parts for a highly valuable asset.
