I don't watch games but I stumbled on the JJ Redick/LeBron James podcast and it's amazing. I don't understand half of it but it's very entertaining and informative.

At a base level it is better to hit the ball hard. Even if at an individual at bat level it might not lead to a hit.

Higher velocity is more effective. I'm rooting for Hall but I question if he'll be more effective at 92 than 97.

Frazier had a combined 2.0 fWAR and rWAR. Hays had a combined 4.7 fWAR and rWAR. He was more than marginally better. Even if you just went by rWAR, it's 2.5 to 1.7.

Better way to judge the baseball is waiting for the guys that track this sort of thing to get enough to cut open and test.

The issue is the huge amount of variance that they allow themselves. They can be truthful when saying that a particular year's worth of balls falls within the same standards as the year before. Thinking on it, I'm a bit surprised that the MLBPA hasn't pushed for a tighter set of specifications, I would think that players would prefer more certainty year to year.
