2021 Draft Thread
joelala replied to Moose Milligan's topic in O's Amateur Draft and International Signings
I’d say I’m annoyed by our draft so far. Cowser is fine, and I really like Norby. Trimble is somewhat exciting too. But I’m confused by all of the seemingly flawed and/or mediocre college seniors we’re taking. I’ll admit that I didn’t like the Westburg pick last year though and so far have been proven thoroughly wrong. Reserving judgement, but yea, I’m annoyed. -

I most likely wouldn’t, unless he’s a gold glove caliber CF. -
That’s what I always thought. I also think I’ve read (somewhere?) that he’s got an arm that could play in right but I don’t recall anything about him being a potential CF.
-
Does he have speed to play center?
-
His swing on that homer last night was absolutely beautiful.

Has anyone ever seen someone go oppo this much for homers? Vlad Jr has 8 this season, and I think that leads the majors. I have to think Gunnar has more than that. Anyone who’s seen him play: does the defense shift against him or play him straight? According to fangraphs, he distributes the ball very evenly to all parts of the field.

Impressive indeed.

Do you actually watch the draft?

Yes, the mlb draft is my favorite draft. I get to know the prospects and then casually follow them through the minors. I play in a dynasty fantasy baseball league so it helps me in that sense too. -
Yea I’m still hoping that if we don’t take Lawler or Watson, Ford is the pick at 5 because I can almost guarantee he won’t be there at our second pick. He looks extremely legit and with a plus arm and plus speed, and the bat speed and torque he generates, looks like he could be 5-tool player at 2B or an OF spot assuming the team who bets him moves him off of catcher.

As long as he debuts by age 30 it’s fine. -

Davis is in college and Henderson is in single A. That bridge won’t have to be crossed for years, if ever. -

Me too. He doesn’t look like a very explosive, quick twitch player from the limited stuff I’ve seen. -

Agree with all of this. I think Cowser is a safe pick and will hit for average but yea the swing in its current iteration isn't built for a lot of power. Looks like he hits off his front foot a bit, and it’s kind of slappy. Also haven’t seen him in the field really but his gait doesn’t look as naturally athletic as some to me so I also wonder what added weight will do to him speed-wise. -
For sure, time will tell. Mullins still may be a bigger development even if Adley is who we hope he is though because it’s found money in a sense. The exact kind of unpredictable, lucky thing a rebuild needs to succeed when you have a “tight budget.”

With that kind of season on a good team I’d think Cedric would get an MVP vote or two. Just remarkable what he’s doing. It’s the biggest development of the season and maybe the biggest of our whole rebuild so far.
