Another headache for the Yankees

Migraines in fact.

The first headache surfaced two weeks ago and Mariano Rivera described it as more than the garden variety discomfort that two aspirin could make disappear.

"It was severe,"" Rivera told The Post yesterday morning in a George M. Steinbrenner Field dugout.

The headaches weren't as strong, but they didn't go away. So Friday the Yankees sent baseball's all-time saves leader for tests to determine the cause of the headaches.

"When you have issues you want to make sure everything is OK," Rivera said of the CAT-scan and blood test.

"They said it seems like migraine headaches."

Glad to see it wasn't anything worse. Might make him unavailable to pitch on some days.

    • I would rather have Gunnar, Westburg and either Urias or Frazier at 3B/SS/2B, even against lefties.  The difference between Urias/Frazier and Mateo against lefties is nominal, and the boost that Mateo can give you off the bench as a pinch-runner / pinch-bunter is more important in my opinion.
    • His spot on the roster comes down to 2 things: 1) Do they trade either Ortiz or Westburg? 2) Do they plan on starting the year with Holliday and/or Mayo on the roster? For #1, if they keep both, Mateo is gone. For #2, if either or both are on the roster, he’s gone. To me, the most likely scenario is one of those 2 is traded and they don’t start the year with either of those guys on the roster, so I think Mateo starts the year with the Os and they just go from there.
    • They talked on the broadcast last night about how GrayRod was using his cutter during his first ten starts and how he was getting knocked around on the heaters. Ben mentioned how it's difficult as a pitcher to effectively command both the cutter and the slider and when they sent GrayRod down, they told him to work on FB command. I haven't heard anyone affiliated with the team say it outright that they told him to stop throwing the cutter (Cakes would say it about both GrayRod and TWells all the time and I can recall at least once during an in-game convo with whoever was mic'd up, Cakes said to tell Tyler to stop throwing the cutter).  I can't find any data that shows that GrayRod has thrown a single cutter since his Aug 2 start against the Jays (he threw one to Vlad Jr.) Ben mentioned that he leads major league starters this year in 100+mph pitches and (I think it was Cakes) said that when he came back up to the big club, he stopped pitching like he was trying to strike out everyone. I haven't looked at the data enough to support or disagree with that statement but he's been so good since coming back from Norfolk that he's lowered his 7.35 ERA from his first 45 1/3 innings by three runs down to 4.35 over his last 75 2/3 innings, throwing to a 2.58 ERA over that span. I saw yesterday that only Bradish has been better over that time. I am confident that we can declare (at least I will) that the GrayRod that we've seen over the last 75 2/3 innings is the pitcher that he is going to be for a while. Damn it, it's nice to have him and KB and Means and even Kremer going into the postseason and next year with GrayRod, Bradish and Kremer all locked up at least through 2026.
    • Mateo becomes a role-player on the team and he seems to be fine with that. its Urias that I think gets traded in the offseason with Holliday kicking the door down in the minors.  Urias has had an off year, but he should easily net us some pitching on the higher-end of the development spectrum.
    • I expect Bradfield to be on the playoff roster next year in the role I expect Mateo to have this year (the Terrance Gore pinch running role with a possible defensive upgrade). I think Bradfield could probably do that now, but it would be a waste of a 40-man roster spot for a full season. That role is not as important in the regular season and Mateo doesn't hit nearly well enough to be playable as a reserve outfielder. Give me McKenna and if he is outrighted and you don't think Cowser is a short-term option as a backup centerfielder, make a trade for another AAAA player or someone like Hicks..
    • On MASN they mentioned something about a film or a special recapping the 2023 season. I'm sure they'll promote it again tonight but does anyone recall when it's going to be? Surprise, surprise, MASN's awful website is no help and has no schedule up past Saturday.
    • Caminero May have been the only player that could keep Mayo off this list and make it 4.
