...he's a strong defensive option to fill in as Andrelton Simmons recovers from a broken pinky. According to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Janish will report to the Braves tomorrow and be in the starting lineup.

All of Janish's experience in the major leagues has come with the Reds. He's appeared in 324 games, hitting to the tune of .221/.289/.302 in 975 plate appearances. He's a right-handed batter. His defense is probably a bit better than Jack Wilson's and a lot better than Tyler Pastornicky. According to DRS (Defensive Runs Saved), he's at +20 for his career at shortstop, which is very solid.

Basically, expect a player in the mold of Jack Wilson, with perhaps slightly better numbers at the plate. Frank Wren wanted to add some experience to his roster as Simmons recovers, and he did exactly that.

Norfolk had Ivan Dejesus, Jr. Imo, he is a better player than Janish. Even if you prefer Janish, I don't see how it's possible to think he's that much better.

Janish is a very good defensive SS, who can't hit. Which might do, in a pinch if Hardy was out for a short while and there was some reason Flaherty couldn't fill in.

That's exactly the scenario for which he is being hired. The case where two starting infielders are temporarily down and you want the defense to remain steady.

Janish is a better defender than DeJesus. DeJesus did primarily play SS for Norfolk last year, but he's more of a 2B. From 2010-2013, he only played a total of 53 games at SS in the minors, and in his two cups of coffee in the majors, he only played 2 innings at SS.
