Yelich is around a 3-4 win talent with 5 win upside. I am not sure I buy any argument that the extension is (1) a bad deal, or (2) potentially destructive to a small market team's ability to compete if Yelich were to "flame out."

You may well be right. I was thinking of a Rocco Baldelli career path.

I'm a fan of the current arb system. Pay them as they play and play well. Non tender them if they don't quite cut it. Sign them as a free agent if you want.
