The spinoff of BAM Tech was a key part of the deal announced last week by MLB and the NHL in which the parties announced MLBAM would handle digital operations for the NHL, NHL.com and the streaming of live games.

BAM Tech as a standalone unit has a valuation of $8 billion, MLB executives told USA Today, and the revenue it generates is shared among the 30 owners. BAM Tech handles more than back-end technology; MLBAM sees it as a content provider, which it will act as with the NHL deal.

As Forbes? Maury Brown speculated, BAM Tech could be content provider along the lines of Apple TV?branching out beyond sports content, becoming a big player in the ?cut-the-cord? movement against rising cable and satellite TV costs.

No such luck. It might end up being a relief pitcher for the Orioles though. It is a profit center.

An equally shared profit center. Right? If each team in the whole league gets an additional $5M, essentially no one does. There's no competitive advantage. The cost of each reliever just goes up a bit.

Yes. That. I guess the advantage is to the teams with the lower payrolls. Or those that spend less on MLB players.
