Zach Greinke opted out of his contract

He is now a free agent.

There were three years and $71 million left on his contract

That's $23 2/3 million a year.

Greinke, 32, was 19-3 with a 1.66 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 200 strikeouts in 222 2/3 innings

With Greinke joining Cueto, Price, and Zimmerman as the top tier talent, that should suck up a bunch of money. Maybe it leaves guys like Chen more available for Baltimore?

I expect him to follow in the steps of Arod and CC and essentially turn this into an extension.

I don't think he leaves the Dodgers.

    • Britton's year was as dominant a closer's season as I could ever recall....   any stat-heads out there know of which seasons were most dominant among closers?   It was a shame he couldn't stay healthy or repeat his success...
    • I think the most impressive thing is how consistently hard he's hitting major league caliber pitching. We knew he had good EVs, and it was clear that he hits the ball hard, but it's impressive to see the results in almost every game.  I know I personally would be thrilled to know he was going to be the everyday 2B this year. Since there is no time machine, we will most likely have to wait and see. Hopefully he gets off to a good start in AAA and forces his way onto the big league roster. Like Frobby though, I have this fear that Elias won't cut bait with his $8 million investment regardless of Westburg and Ortiz's stats in AAA.  Westburg is 24 years old and showing that he's ready for the major leagues. It's ashamed that poor offseason moves have blocked his everyday job opportunity to start the year.
    • He should’ve been called up at the end of last year. Instead we got Aguilar…
    • I think he just had a bad day... but he definitely looked at a bunch of hittable pitches. It was like he was looking for walks.
    • When did he move Bencosme? Are you thinking of Hernaiz?
    • For the lawyers, masochists, and curiosity-seekers out there, here's the video of last week's argument in the New York Court of Appeals. I haven't watched it, beyond confirming that it's the right case on the video.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XQIJoj6O4c I don't know, if anything, what the MASN/Orioles lawyers have in mind about a challenge in the Maryland courts if they get an adverse final ruling in New York. But it's hard for me to see how that challenge wouldn't be frivolous and short-lived. And it's easy to see that the Orioles' bringing a Maryland lawsuit after the Nats prevail in New York (where MASN and the Orioles elected to bring and pursue their case) would further piss off MLB.  Delaying things just a little by such a maneuver might make sense if the Angeloses believe (a) they are close enough to selling the team (implying that the owner is or may not have much time left) that the obligations to make payments to the Nats might get lumped in with the negotiation of the billion dollar-plus sale price and be paid by the purchaser, and (b) they might derive some benefit from that compared to  paying the Nats themselves. I'm not saying that's happening, but it's all I can think of. I understood a few decades ago that Peter Angelos had a reputation for obtaining procedural rulings from the Maryland courts in asbestos cases that were pretty extraordinary, but I have to believe that possibility is long gone and, even if it weren't, wouldn't get MASN and the Orioles very far.
