Ubaldo has a 6.93 ERA, Miley has a 5.69 ERA and Tillman has a 7.65 ERA.

Hellickson has a 4.73 ERA.

And Gausmam 5.79 , and Bundy 4.53. He's our best pitcher and if the Orioles do it right Bundy is nearly out of innings. 20 more innings would nearly be a40% increase over last year.

Maybe the Orioles want to evaluate Jeremy and resign him when he is FA. Have you ever considered that?

God I hope not.

Would be a little cheaper to send a scout to his games the rest of the season.

I think this trade has less to do with competing for a wildcard spot than it does with encouraging the average fan to believe that we are making an effort to compete without giving up anyone we were counting on for the future.

  • No matter how bad Hellickson may be, his ERA makes him look like he's having a better year than some of our starters.
  • Kim has become a bit of a favorite in an underdog way, but the choice of  playing Kim or Mancini, is a no-brainer. Fans, and some in O's management, will be happy to see Kim have more of an opportunity to play elsewhere.
  • If this results in Ubaldo being released, people will love it (at least until Hellickson has thrown a few clunkers on his own.

This deal probably won't change where the O's finish in the standings, but it has some good PR value and there is nothing heinous about it.

I'm usually on the same page as Shepard, but I'm not as accepting this as an ok nothing trade.  I agree that we didn't give up much of value, but we did give up value and IMHO Hellickson is a subtraction by addition.

Is it possible they want to extend Hellickson? Hope he pitches like Cy Young and hit with QO? Only things I can think of...

If they want him that bad they could sign him in the off-season.

The idea that, if he did happen to pitch well for two months, they would spend $17+ million on him for next year is horrifying.

Garrett Cleavinger involved in deal.  I hope no one else is heading to the Phillies.  This franchise just loves to throw prospects away.

Dammit. I know Kim wasn't playing but hate to see him go. I guess it's best for him. I am going to miss him.

The Orioles TWENTY SEVENTH rated prospect on the MLB Orioles site with the following write up:

Scouts were divided over Cleavinger's future role heading in the 2015 Draft, with some viewing the Oregon closer as a potential late-inning reliever with a power arm and others seeing him as a lefty specialist with poor command and less-than-explosive stuff. The Orioles made Cleavinger their third-round selection, and he rewarded the organization in 2016 by reaching Class A Advanced Frederick after an All-Star campaign with Class A Delmarva. The move up to Double-A proved to be a challenge for Cleavinger, who struggled to throw strikes while missing fewer bats.

A stocky left-hander, Cleavinger's fastball will touch 96 mph but typically sits in the 89-92 mph range. His curveball plays as average, registering in the low 70s with good shape and depth, though at times he struggles to get on top of it. The pairing helped Cleavinger pile up 102 strikeouts in 76 1/3 innings in 2016, although his control regressed with the move up to the Carolina League. Meanwhile, the development of a usable changeup should help Cleavinger avoid being relegated to a LOOGY.

Cleavinger's deceptive delivery and the fact that he hides the ball well makes his stuff play up and makes him naturally tough to barrel. That being said, the effort in the delivery does raise questions about his overall strike-throwing ability. The Orioles considered developing Cleavinger as a starter in 2016 but ultimately decided to keep him in the bullpen, where his two average-or-better pitches and deception give him greater impact potential.

Darn FO. This is a bad trade. IMO
