From a puritanical point of view, I liked it when only the division winners made the playoffs.    But that leaves an awful lot of fans not having much to root for in August and September.   So the whole point is to maximize the number of fans who remain interested in how their team is doing down the stretch.

I remember, one year, I think the Orioles missed the playoffs with a 96 win team. That’s pretty ridiculous. But I like three divisions and one wild card. I do think that the draft pick process should be changed to create winning incentive for the bottom teams, but that hasn’t happened yet

Here’s a few times the O’s missed the playoffs:

1980: 100 wins

1977: 97 wins 

1964: 97 wins

1961: 95 wins

I'm kinda worried about the rest of the rotation but whatever, John Means could be like Bedard in 2007 making the team vaguely watchable.

Or we could defy the critics and win it all.
