I play softball in an informal neighborhood game I run that plays every Sunday from mid-May to mid-October.   One of our pitchers wears a catcher’s mask when he pitches after getting hit in the eye with an errant throw while running to 1B (in some other league he was playing in), which did some serious damage to his eye. So far in 20ish years we’ve never had a pitcher get hit really hard with a batted ball, but there’s always a first time.
