Trevor Rogers 2024

Just Regular

Recommended Posts

Starting to get whimsical for that brief period post-Burnes trade where we had, in theory, one of the best rotations in MLB.

Back end and most of the bullpen is ROUGH right now. The offense getting Rangers 23 hot in late September is about all there is left to hope for. At least the playoff rotation will be serviceable. Going to be hard to win series the rest of the way though, with black holes in the 4 and 5 spots.

hes been pitching bad in the mlb for a few years now

A few years?   He was an all star in 2021 then did have a bad year in 2022.  Last year he pitched 4 games with an ERA of 4 and whip of 1.22 so pretty good.    This year he struggled the first 12 starts but has been good last 9 coming into it.

Short sample size? He's been terrible for years.

What years.

2021 when he had an ERa of 2.64 and whip of 1.11?  Was that bad?
2022 he was bad 5.46 1.5 whip

2023 he had ERa of 4 with whip of 1.22 was that bad?

2024 4.53 ERa whip 1.53 which he was bad the start of year but very good the last half of the year so far.

He has basically been an all star one year, been bad one year, been ok but hurt one year and been average this year with bad start then good stretch.    This narrative he has been bad for years is just false.

He’s not going to be effective unless they change something with his sinker or FB. Looking back since 2022, his FB and sinker have xwOBA’s way above league average, while his change and slider are way below league average (in a good way). While an uptick in velocity likely helps, his velocity in 2021 and 2022 were practically the same, but his FB got hammered in 2022 and was one of the of the best in the game in 2021.

He’s throwing his FB and sinker way too much (about 56% combined) for how bad they are as well. Means was different because he had better command, but his slider and change were his best pitches, and he threw his fastball roughly 49% of the time in his two full seasons, FWIW. He also cannot be walking 4 batters per 9 innings with the lack of K’s he is getting. That’s not gonna work.

Rotate the narrative a bit and make it into “he hasn’t been good for years.” I don’t think it’s false any longer.

I find a little odd that people trying to defend Rogers are hiding behind the injury in 2023. “You can’t say he’s sucked for years because he barely pitched in 2023.”

Well…he sucked in 2022 and he sucks this year, so I’m not sure there’s that much quarter in the argument that he was hurt in 2023 and thus couldn’t suck.

Ben said his slider was his go to out pitch but it was awful tonight.  The perfect example was the Naylor at bat before the homer.  He go ahead of him 1-2 then missed badly with a slider on uncompetitive pitch.  Threw a nice fast ball in on his hands but was fouled off.   He then tried to come back with a slider again but was way outside.  He makes a nice pitch on outside half or a ball to strike pitch he probably gets swing and miss.  Then threw another one way outside to walk him.  If you get ahead you don’t have to be perfect with breaking stuff but you can’t throw uncompetitive pitches.  Povich did a lot of that as well.

Not great, Bob!

He has been average this year.  The same people complaining about him and saying he sucked for years now but then say they wanted Fedde.  If Roger’s sucked the last few years what did Fedde do?  He was so bad he had an ERA over 5 .50 the two years before then had to pitch in Asia because no one wanted him.
The fact of the matter is there wasn’t much out there to trade for.  The big 3 were not getting traded unless you grossly overpaid for them with 1-2 of our big 3 guys which Elias wasn’t gonna do.  Then you had Efflin who we got and Flaherty on next level.  Flaherty I don’t believe was an option based on last year from performance and just didn’t seem to fit in clubhouse either.  Then you had Fedde, kikuchi, Lorenzen, Montas, Cobb and Rogers on next level.  Fedde was the best this year but was by far the worst the previous years.  Kikuchi has been up and down last few years, being solid last year.  This year he started out great but has ERA’s of 6.29 and 6.96 the previous 2 months and was just rental.  Montas was a rental and hasn’t been good either.  Cobb hasn’t even pitched yet this year.
Then you had some teams that decide to hold on to their guys which made market very thin.  The Rangers, Giants, Cubs Rockies Angels and Blue Jays kept all their pitchers that they had control of after this year.   I think a few teams thought one or more of those teams would give in at the end but none seemed too so not a lot of quality starters were moved.

Food for thought: everyone was ecstatic after Flaherty’s debut in Toronto last year and then we didn’t get much more from him.

Maybe Rogers will do the opposite. I’m sure he will benefit from spending time with the rest of the staff before he toes the rubber again.

Putting any stock into his start tonight, his first day with a new team, a new catcher and not having any time with the pitching coaches is silly. Give him a few turns through the order, then blow your lids, but to do it today is silly.

I agree.
