NCAAT discussion thread..Upsets? Seeding? Teams to watch?

I can't see Duke getting past Louisville/Cal and then potential Texas A+M. Especially if it is Louis. and then Texas A+M which is what I am projecting. One of those nights they will be cold and even if they aren't they are so beatable. Duke really is a team built to lose in the NCAA tourney. They rely so heavily on the 3. They had a ton of chances to put Miami and Georgia Tech today, and they let them right back in it and were lucky to escape. The ACC is gonna struggle as a whole. 0 teams in the Sweet 16 is very possible, although MD and Duke should make it that far. The key to beating Duke is to allow the big 3 (Scheyer, Singler, and Smith) to get their 60 pts. 20 20 20. Then hold the others to 15 or less, then score 76. The big 3 won't beat you, its the others, who shouldn't beat you. If Zoubek, Dawkins, and others kill you, you are done, becuase the big 3 will get their 60. They just aren't very good other then those 3.

To me, Duke's big men are playing much better now that they played in December and January.

Yeah, I think it's rather absurd that the overall #1 got what most feel is the toughest bracket. The best #1, best or second best #2 and best #3 shouldn't be in the same bracket.

The funny thing is, the #2 #1 seed, Kentucky, got the next hardest road.

What is the point of being the #1 overall seed then?

WV was the best 2 sed according to the committee but they try not to pair them with another big East school, so WV should have been with Duke, OSU with Cuse, KSU with Kent and Nova with Kansas.

In other words, the worst #2, the worst #3, etc...they should be paired with Kansas unless its a conference opponent...Of course, then the travel schedule has to be considered and that hurts things as well but it should be harder for the #1 overall seed.

Well, if you get the worst #2, shouldn't you also then have the best #3? That's how, ideally, they want to snake it, right?

As an aside, a hearty congratulations for getting the worst/worse thing right. Think that's the first time I've seen you do that. :)

Why do I like so many upsets in the West? It's making me nervous...

I don't like Xavier all that much. I don't like BYU at all. Butler and Vandy don't impress me. I feel like this bracket is setting me up...

I like BYU and Butler, although UTEP is a good squad. Xavier is gonna stomp Minnesota. I agree that Vandy will get all the can handle and more from the Racers.

Sell me on Xavier. Why are they so much better than Minnesota? Minn has some nice wins over Purdue (no Hummell), Wisconsin...but they have bad losses too (like Portland). I think I always overrate Minnesota because I like Tubby Smith. I admittedly know nothing about Xavier.

They've played a fairly tough schedule (although they've lost most of their good OOC games). They had the same A10 record in conference as Temple and were a game better than Richmond.

I don't know much about them, but I don't think Minnesota has any more of a run in them.

That wasn't much of a sell. :D I'm sticking with Tubby!

And Bilas has Cornell beating Kentucky.

Kentucky is the most talented team in the country but they are also very young.

Yeah their youth is scary, but they do play well in tight games despite that youth. Winning 6 will be tough though.

I really like Cornell, but I also really don't like their first round matchup. I wish they were playing literally any other 5 seed, I think Temple is legit, but I have to pick Cornell just because I think they should be a 6-7 seed themselves.

Other than Siena, seemingly all of the darkhorses that I liked before the brackets were announced are playing higher seeds that I like as well rather than the ones I think are ripe for an upset.

I really like Murray St....I have them in the sweet 16, along with Siena.

Vandy doesn't impress me.

Yeah I have Murray State beating Vandy as well. Don't have them beating Butler though. I do have one bracket where I have UTEP beating Butler and Murray State then beating them.

UTEP, Cornell, Old Dominion, St Mary's, and Northern Iowa (2nd rd) all have tougher matchups than I wanted them to have. I'm still picking a few of them to win, but I'm not as confident in them as I want to be.

    • Did we ? You can’t possibly know that. Apparently, Elias got a player he thought he could fix.  Sorry but I just don’t think Rogers is as good as Irvin with his diminished stuff. I think he’s essentially a throw away. It would be wise to extend Eflin now while we still can. That way the resources used to get him can actually provide some long term value. Dominguez was an ok pickup…I don’t hate the deal. Problem is we needed a closer and he’s isn’t that. Thankfully Bautista is returning and will push him down the depth chart a slot or two. Soto ….Agreed, you bring him back if you can’t find a better option. I expect them to keep him. Otherwise, giving up Seth Johnson with our minors pitching quality shortage looks like a bad decision  Eloy didn’t cost much …. My general thought is pick ups like him didn’t matter beyond how you grade those acquisitions on a team that “Really Wanted to Win”. I question this because none of the guys that we picked up where having good seasons elsewhere. My thoughts are the same for Rivera …. He was a 563 OPS in Miami but got hot here and was a .948 here. His career OPS is .676 so his stint here is probably not repeatable. His projected arb number is 1.4 million so they likely keep him around as a piece and he’s young enough that maybe the change in scenery caused the light to come on.   By the way … here’s a piece from Roch about sone of these guys.   https://www.masnsports.com/blog/taking-another-look-at-orioles-roster-decisions
    • This has to count as one of the, if not the, biggest choke in ALCS history. Up 5-3 with two outs and no one on in the ninth, after you came back from 1-3 in the eight, with a chance to put a lock on the series.
    • Reverse jinx works again! 😆 🥳
    • Clay Holmes' agent could have used the season ending a good couple months ago. It was nice seeing a chink in Luke Weaver's armor.    Gunnar Henderson v. Anthony Volpe is kind of a centerpiece of Mike Elias mostly out-General Managing Brian Cashman the last half decade, but Luke Weaver v. Craig Kimbrel is not a good chapter and flipping those two guys might have changed the 2024 division.
    • I have all sorts of credit cards that charge interest because they provide me with tens of thousands of dollars in free interest. That said, I never pay interest, because I always pay off the balance each month.
    • My friend and I each had flex plans. Him $2500 and me $1300. Neither of us renewed. Are schedules are too difficult to commit to a set plan and the lack of perks for the lower-tier set plans and flex plans make it not worth letting the Os earn the float on our money.
