"This was a year that we thought we needed to make a move in terms of wins and losses,” MacPhail said. “It’s important to show some teamwide progress, and to this point we’ve taken a giant step backwards.”

I love what McPhail has done with this team since he took over but the only thing that can be said about this quote is Well DUH. I know we'll turn it around but we did take a few steps forward and a giant leap backwards.

What abysmal team has scored LESS runs than the Orioles!??!?!?!

Seriously? How could that be possible?

Houston is two runs behind us.

But they are ahead of us in R/G because we have played one more game.

Mass is one of about 6 states that the Red Sox profit from. I guess you could argue that the Orioles profit from DC and Virginia... but that pales in comparison.

And MASN reaches from Harrisburg to Charlotte. And the Yankees and Sox compete for many of those fans up there. That's stiff competition.

We are only not a regional team because we suck miserably each year.

In my town here in Florida we have a Ravens bar owned by a former Dolphins player. It's filled with purple on Sundays.

5 miles away-another Ravens packed bar.

On the beach a bfast spot with Ravens. Memorabilia and bobbleheads.

There are plenty of Yanks and Sox spots down here.

But our cheap O's are nowhere to be found. Even in Fort Lauderdale there is NOTHING.

Put some real money into the product and that'll change.

BTW Houston and Baltimore have the same team BA, but Houston's OBP is 18 points lower. Their slugging percentage is 33 points lower, if you can believe that. Imagine watching that team hit.

But they've won twice as many games!

“They gave us a great road map to how you compete here,” he said of the Rays. “In my view, that’s the only path open to us. We’re not going to be able to outspend Boston and New York.”
That is a really pathetic quote by AM and its also very disheartening.

He is basically stated what I feared....That the only way he feels we can compete is if all of our young players become very good players...Now, we know our young core has to be good but we have the resources to augment that core much better than Tampa does.

Well, 3 of Houston's wins came against the Pirates... their other wins are against the Cubbies and the Marlins. Which are not exactly the Yankees, Red Sox and Rays.

You expect the Orioles to be able to spend $180m for payroll?

Yes just based on area demographics and POTENTIAL market size. But to realize potential, like any business you have to spend money.

Angelos has had enough fat profit years based off budget baseball and MLB handouts. It's time he does what others do to improve the product to increase market share. Spend money.

Heck forget the Sox. We aren't even spending like the Cardinals, Twins, Seattle, Blue Jays many years...the list goes on.

And MacPhail has never spent money. And a future MLB commish wouldn't want to anyways.

Yeah. It has gotten to a point where as much as I love the Orioles, I want the ballpark to be completely empty every night just to drive home the fact that "even the dieahards have had enough."

I am truly disgusted with what has happened to this Franchise. MacPhail did a great job of restocking our system, but its becoming more evident that he will not do what is needed to make us a winner. It wouldn't surprise me to see Trembley absolutely BLAST this organization on his way out. He has waited his entire life for this opportunity, and when he finally got it, his GM has not given him the guns to enter the fight. Truly sad!

The problem with this scenario is that it will just be yet another reason for PA to not open up his purse.

When teams like the Twins can afford a 90+ million dollar payroll and we are crying poor, there is a problem.

I know people don't like the conspiracy theories about PA wanting AM because he is cheap but I think to totally dismiss it is wrong. AM can build a foundation and he can bring in the young talent but can he/will he take that next step to acquire real talent to augment this core? What reason do we have to believe that he will?

He was able to rip off Pittsburgh and Florida and get ARam and Lee in Chicago..Great trades...What are the chances you can make those moves again?

    • Good point, no other metropolitan area has more than one team.
    • Could it be that they allowed the Gnats to reside within 30 minutes of their home. Effectively cutting their market in half?
    • Got my all-time low rarity score on today's game - 6.
    • 41 freaking years and here's this guy with the name pickles telling me I should be happy with 91 wins and getting owned in the playoffs again. 😂 😂 I saw a team that looked terrible the second half and probably didn't even deserve that spot the way they were playing .
    • Lol. Here's the funny they know more then you know. Typical Oriole fan who's happy with getting punched in the mouth.
    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.
