Not panicking, but made a point to say that if things remain status quo next month he will be dropping.

This is really heartening to see.  Acevedo was one of the first international signings of the Elias regime, coming after most teams had spent their allotment.   O’s management said at the time that they felt Acevedo wouid have been a 7-figure signing if he’d been signed the following year.  His progress has been a bit slow, but he doesn’t turn 21 until August, so he’s still got time to develop into a good prospect.

I’ve got a soft spot for the 2019 international guys as well.  So cool to see the progress 3 years later.

I agree with some of what you are saying. He has definitely earn an MLB opportunity and proven that he is ready for the SHOW.

However, that opportunity may have to come somewhere else if he is used in a trade. I don't see any scenario where we will or need to retain all 4 of Westburg, Gunnar, Ortiz, and Norby. Some are going to have to go.

And really it's a win/win. They get the opportunity to show what they can do and the Orioles will get the much need help at the top of their rotation. To be honest there is only really room for 2 of the aforementioned group.

The 40 man stuff shouldn't be an issue because we have what 3/4 mediocre pitchers on there currently that are just taking up space?

    Injuries & poor performance.

Elias is fond of the 40 man rules and retaining services.

Of course they will make a trade in the future.  That doesn’t mean Westburg shouldn’t get some reps at MLB.  Success in MLB will build his brand.

  4. My man just jacked another mammoth bomb. 💪

After taking a BB in previous AB.

Edit: they measured at 375 (think wind switched was blowing out early)

First multi HR game.  3/3 on day with a BB

What's the 4am thing? I'm not familiar or don't understand.

If the O's wanted to play Westburg they could use him at 2B and keep Gunnar where he is. I agree that Gunnar is scuffling BIG TIME in regards to EVERY aspect of his game except for taking walks. He has been more of a negative than a positive despite his OBP. But I sort of expected struggles out of the gate. The same happened to Adley, JRod, and Witt (prospects of a similar pedigree).

If the Orioles believe for some strange reason that Westburg is a better player than Gunnar. Then they should move Gunnar while he still has TREMENDOUS value. Sending him down to AAA does nothing. As I said if Westburg is great, then what's the plan for Gunnar going forward? If Westburg struggles, like he most likely will, what's the plan then?

The Orioles are winning in spite of Gunnar's struggles so I don't see that being a factor for the decision.

Typo.  Fixed.  “40 man thing” Westburg isn’t on the 40 so likely won’t get a call any time soon :(

Sending him down creates opportunity for someone else.  If you were gonna trade a top flight player to the Os and had interest in Westburg, would you rather see him tear up AAA or have success in MLB.  I think now after 400+PA of .~900 OPS he should get a shot soon.  If they aren’t gonna jettison Frazier then who should slide over for him to get some ABs? I think he’s more than deserved it at this point.  For no other reason to throw him a bone and put some $$ in his pocket for a couple weeks.

  6. The more I see Acevedo play, the more I like him.   He is a man child at 6’4” and is intimidating in the box.  He doesn’t get robbed with his swings and he is making contact often.  The power is legit & to top it off he can fly.  Hit his 2nd HR of the year today in just 66 ABs after just  8 in 631 last year.  Just swiped his 4th bag of the year already as well.

I agree with you that the deadline is the next logical window for trades to happen.

No onto the later statement.. It sounds like you really like Westburg and who am I to tell you not to?lol

I'm not a guy that falls in love with particular prospects. But I want them all to do well so much in that it helps the Baltimore Orioles. Having said that, if your scenario played out and Jordan Westburg killed it when he got to the Majors and they sent Gunnar down. Then what?

What do you do with the much more talented, higher rated player/prospect in Gunnar? Leave him in AAA? Trade him? Platoon them?

Also, if the consensus of evaluators is correct, and Gunnar is much more talented than Westburg. What informs your confidence that Westburg will come up to the Bigs and have immediate success without experiencing the transitional struggles that Gunnar has?

For the record, I don't care if we keep both, trade both, or keep one and trade the other. So long as the Baltimore Orioles get the kind of return that will provide a significant boast to the starting rotation. IMO - we have so much talent that we can trade both of them and still have adequate replacements for SS, 3B, and 2B long and short term.

Then baseball.  Iron sharpens irons and competition is a good thing.  I’m more concerned about Ws in MLB and the long term success of the assets.  Westburg is smoking right now & Gunnar is not.  Switch them.   Gunnar’s D has not be world class so far as well.  I’m not down on Gunnar at all, just want to see the team use the talent and depth they’ve created.  The 40 man thing puts a damper on that. FTR I don’t think it’s likely to happen.  But in don’t think it would hurt to get Westburg some MLB reps and Gunnar some confidence.

  8. Nuñez has become the early Ace of the Delmarva staff.  His line today doesn’t look too great but there were a lot of good take aways.  The D behind him was pretty suspect.  He fielded his position well in the 3rd on a soft hit GB to 2B that the 1B fielded and then through away (lead off batter).  That spiraled into a BB, another error, and a 3R 0ER inning.   He has absolute tree trunks for legs  and throws easy heat.  Opposing batters struggled to barrel the ball, there was a lot of soft contact and 5 ks 3 bb through 4ip.  Didn’t see anything hit remotely hard.  He’s not afraid to throw his slider in any count, threw  it first pitch, as an out pitch, and when behind.  Looks like he’s tinkering with a splitty as a change.  I thought he looked a little slow to the plate, so I timed him and had him at 1.3-1.6.  Looked like Carolina was trying to steal off him, they attempted 3 steals in first 3 inning.  Willems threw out 2/3 - would have had a 3rd had SS not tried to get runner on 3rd trying to score on the attempt (runners 1st & 3rd).  Not a lot of command as Tony noted.  All in all a guy to watch.  If he puts the command together looks like he has some weapons to work with.

I would really hate to see that. I would rather to remain (frustratingly) in this holding pattern. Until one of them or both (depending on who we decide to keep) can be packaged in a trade. The worse thing for the Baltimore Orioles is for a Gunnar Henderson to waste value sitting at AAA. As a matter of fact, the worse thing for us is for Westburg, or Ortiz, or Cowser or Norby to be sitting at AAA by season's end.

By the deadline, we have to decide who stays and who goes. It does nothing for the Orioles to hoarde Minor League talent for too much longer.

Trade ain’t happening until July.  Would like to see Jordan get his shot and Gunnar get things going.  Beauty of depth and positional redundancy.

I could see him being added to the 40-man and given a look similar to Ortiz. Maybe they want a RH batter with more pop than Ortiz and take the opportunity to evaluate him. I know there's some trickery with not putting Johnson on the 60-day yet, but I don't really see them hesitating to do that if they want to get a look at Westburg.

I think you kind of owe it to yourself to at least see how he looks at the ML level before you sling him in a trade.

I wonder if Gunnar doesn’t pick it up in the next 2-3 weeks he gets the Grayson AAA tune up treatment and we get to see Westburg get his opportunity.

Thanks for continuing this @Frobby!  It's a great way to see some player trends through chunks of time throughout the year!

Seeing Haskin got me curious since he seemingly outperformed expectations last year as well.  The BA/OBP is being fueled by a .615 Babip too.  It would be nice to see the xBA, etc. on him.  32% K% is concerning.  10+% BB% is solid.  He might end up being an anomaly to follow stat-wise as well.

I'll take Cowser for my positional MiL player.  He got off to a sluggish start (especially with the K's).  But has righted the ship and his K% is lower than it was at any stop last season (23.5%).  The .437 OBP sets the table for that stacked line-up!  21 BBs and a 17.6% BB%!  Toss in some solid CF defense for good measure too.

For MiL pitcher, I like the Pinto line!  I'm a sucker for WHIP, but the K9-BB9 is the best of the grouping above too (9.6).

For a guy who doesn’t get much press Haskins has quietly put together a fanatic Pro career.  He just continues to steadily improve and keep moving up. He’s selling out for power a bit increasing his ISO but it  hasn’t hampered his OBP skills. I don’t think he will be a star or an impact player, but if he keeps up the incremental improvement I can see him carving out a nice MLB career.

  12. He’s 27 y/o and is in his 11th professional season.  He has other worldly athletic skills and by all accounts a good head on his shoulders.  He just finished his first year of everyday ABs.  He has grown into his man strength and is about 1.5 months away from his 1,000th MLB AB.  For all those reasons I’m holding out hope that he is realizing his potential and can continue to produce at a high level.

  13. I see Nuñez made the bubble.  He’s listed as SP tomorrow for Delmarva.  Reading up on him sounds like he has a live arm and a killer slider (60 grade).  Also sounds like an odd body type for a pitcher (short and stocky w/big lower half).  In Fangraphs write  up he was listed as the best arm (velocity wise) of the pitchers we got in the Lopez trade.   Curious if @Tony-OH has seen him throw and any initial impressions.  Gotta say all the sudden there are some intriguing arms in the lower minors.  I plan to watch his outing tomorrow.  11am Game unless there’s a typo.

    March/April 2023 - hitters

There’s an almost limitless supply of candidates this month.   From highest affiliate to lowest:

Josh Lester .866 OPS, 8 HR, 24 RBI

Kyle Stowers .996 OPS, 5 HR, 17 RBI

Lewin Diaz .905 OPS, 4 HR, 14 RBI

Hudson Haskin 1.152 OPS, 2 HR, 11 RBI

Colton Cowser .932 OPS, 4 HR, 19 RBI

Jordan Westburg, .927 OPS, 5 HR, 23 RBI

Heston Kjerstad, 1.004 OPS, 6 HR, 9 RBI

Jackson Holliday, 1.121 OPS, 3 HR, 17 RBI

Creed Willems, 1.209 OPS, 5 HR, 16 RBI

Sammy Basallo, .858 OPS, 3 HR, 23 RBI

Lester had the most HR (8) and RBI (24).  Cowser scored the most runs (27).  Haskin had the best BA (.391) and OBP (.500), but in fairly limited PA (56) due to injury   Willems had the best SLG (.726) and OPS (1.209).

There’s several other guys who had very good months, but I figured 10 was enough.

Lots of great choices here, but I’d go with Willems.

Was looking through stats in the post and said to myself “it’s gotta be the big man” with 5 bombs and a 1.209.  What a difference a year makes!

My thoughts exactly!  Why can’t they figure that out so we can have baseball every night.  6 months is long enough!

I really wanted him to make the team out of ST.  All he does is perform and do what’s he’s asked.  I don’t see a path for him with Frazier and Urias on the team.

Bad bullpen is cumulative though.    Aroldis looks in strong form, with drama to come for any trade acquirer.

Matt Quatraro also ODU according to B-Ref - isn't that school the Monarchs?     The Royals seem appropriate.

Today Heyman on Brian Kenny's show said most of Kim Ng's front office wanted Quatraro, and the Skip Schumaker hire was a maverick move for her.

Negro League museum and Arthur Bryant's puts Kansas City on the Mount Rushmore of stuff to do before a game in cities I've seen the Orioles as a visitor.

Yes, Monarch’s. Old school  CAA represent! Historically a great baseball school pulling from Norfolk area and all throughout VA.  Verlanders alma mater along with some other notables.  Bruce Sutter, Daniel Hudson & Yarbrough went there as well. They’ve had a handful of first rounders.  I’m still pissed the CAA broke up.  Was consistently a top 3 conference behind ACC & SEC in 90s.  Richmond, VCU, Old Dominion, East Carolina, JMU were consistently in top 25 and UNC Wilmington, William & Mary, and George Mason were no slouches.

Wow Lyles has been really bad. I hadn’t looked his numbers up. At least in the early going, going Gibson instead of Lyles is looking smart.

I was looking at his #s yesterday when prepping for the Elias Pitching acquisitions thread.  He has been absolutely awful this year.  Historically I’d say that’s reason for him to come out and crush us but I feel different this year.  I think we lay it on him (if we face him - haven't checked matchups)

The Royals 1-12 home record makes me anxious.     They are fresh home from a long road trip.

Yarbrough is an interesting opening test.     He's had good games against tanking BAL offenses - things should be different now.

Greinke and Verlander might be the last 3000 IP careers ever.

I feel like Yarbrough owns us.

Can anyone in a nutshell describe why Povich is a better prospect than Rom? Both are the same age, but Rom is at Norfolk. Is it velocity?

Povich throws 5 pitches.  He has a hammer 12/6 curve.  Mixes in a cutter, slider and change.  He’s a 6’3” with long arms and gets good extensions.   Higher k/9 and lower bb/9.  Fastball is sneaky fast at 94 especially when he pitches backwards.  Curveball is plus and the slider change flirt with being plus at times.   He’s 23 and lean and likely to add a tick or two On the FB.  He’s free and easy and mixes all his pitches which makes for a tough AB.  He can lose his command from time to time which is why he’s put up some stinkers every once in a while.  But when he’s on, he’s darn good.  Everything I’ve seen on social media points to a hard working driven young man.
