Kevin Gausman Today 2015

Watching the post game and Thorne asks both Buck and Kevin about him staying in the rotation. What more do they need to say for Gary to comprehend that he is.
Yep. Who would they replace Kevin with? Bud Norris??!!

Actually, Kevin seemed to settle down after the first inning. The Yankees took full advantage while O's bats kept leaving RISP.

That's it.

This is it....;)

Gausman on his first inning:

"Just some pitches. Two strikes to (Jacoby) Ellsbury, that's definitely too good of a pitch. That's why he's making what he's making. He's a pretty good hitter. Really that lineup is just veteran guy after veteran guy. That first inning, I was definitely around the center of the plate more than any others. I think after that I really established throwing my fastball in for strikes. I think it showed after that. My stuff was pretty good tonight, and I felt comfortable with it. Really two splits that were left down the middle of the plate. When you throw that pitch and you leave it pretty center cut, it can get hit a long ways."

On being able to shrug off first inning:

"Yeah, you know sometimes. Obviously, I'm not happy about it. I don't think I ever shrug things off at this level. Yeah, you know walking (Carlos) Beltran when I did, those were really good pitches that he just happened to not to swing at. In that situation, yeah, you kind of shrug your shoulders. I think what I did after that was pretty good, kind of kept us in the game."

On how getting the ball every five days now will benefit him:

"Yeah, definitely. That's what it's all about, getting into a routine, especially for a starting pitcher. That's what it's all about. You lose your routine, you can get out of whack and maybe we're prima donnas in that sense, but it's just one of those things. We find what works for us, and I think when you know every given day what you're going to be doing that day, it only helps you."

On being happy he lasted six innings:

"I knew after the first inning my stuff was good. I was going to have to mix in pitches with these guys. It's a veteran lineup, so you can't throw the same pitch too many times in a row. You get them out on a split the first time, they're not going to make it easy on you the second time. Definitely to lock in and go six, I wish I would have gone seven, but it was huge for us and kept us in the game."

And Buck,

Kevin Gausman allowed three runs and threw 29 pitches in the first inning, but he made it through the sixth.

"He just made some mistakes with the breaking ball, that's all. But I'm proud of the way he came back and pitched after that," said manager Buck Showalter. "He was very competitive. I've got no problem with pitch selection, just where he got them. He made some really good pitches with it later on. But he kept us in the game. We were engaged in it because he didn't implode."

He needs to start hitting.

This front office wouldn't let him face major league hitting on a consistent basis. This front office would shuttle him between Norfolk and Bmore letting him start in Camden Yards for a game every two weeks before sending him back down - even if he hit two home runs a game. That's how they would develop the mighty hitting Gausman.

Of course the way they developed Schoop last year is completely contrary to your hyperbole.

I just came home from the ballgame. Gausman was fabulous, what a breath of fresh air for our starting pitching. If anyone thinks of taking Gausman out of the rotation -- because he has options or for any other reasons -- they need to have their heads examined.

Maybe people can come down off the Gausman bashing bandwagon now. Two good starts in a row, hopefully he's onto something.

I didn't realize there was a Gausman bashing bandwagon. Then again, I didn't know there was a Bud Norris bandwagon either. Must be the same people.

Not too many curveballs today.

Nope, a foul ball for a strike and a ground ball out early on. I'd rather he bury that pitch to Castellanos than to make the mistake with the FB left out over the plate. It's a work in progress, but he needs it as little more than a pitch to show then he does as an out pitch. If he can throw it as a first pitch "get me over CU" when most everyone has to look FB even better.

When he has FB command like he has the last two starts he needs to use it early and often.

Also Caleb had a great interview where he said Det is a good breaking ball hitting team so with gausman's stuff challenging up and locating is a good approach.

He also had a pretty funny manny impression ;)

    • Got my all-time low rarity score on today's game - 6.
    • 41 freaking years and here's this guy with the name pickles telling me I should be happy with 91 wins and getting owned in the playoffs again. 😂 😂 I saw a team that looked terrible the second half and probably didn't even deserve that spot the way they were playing .
    • Lol. Here's the funny they know more then you know. Typical Oriole fan who's happy with getting punched in the mouth.
    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.
    • Which core players beside Adley Rutschman struggled?
    • The entire commentary on Hyde and the team seems odd but have to admit there does seem to be something off.   Team seemed adrift for most of the 2nd half.  A very talented team went off the rails midway through the season mostly due to core players struggling and rookies not performing or filling in adequately for a few injured starters.    None of the position player trade line acquisitions performed that well.     Hyde seemed in over his head or at a loss on how to correct things, but he must have convinced Elias that he has a plan to fix things.  Curious to see what happens with the coaching staff.
