Roch: Wynns arrives in camp

After rolling his ankle in the Dominican Winter League, Bowie catcher Austin Wynns will get his opportunity to be seen afterall. Wynns was originally going to get a non-roster invite but that was delayed due to his recovery. Wynns says he's 100 percent and ready to play. Most likely Wynns will catch most games at Bowie this year with Chance Sisco moving to Norfolk.

Wynns is known for his defense and could have a chance to be a back up in the major leagues if he can continue to improve on his hitting.

There are both professional and personal reasons why he is my favorite player. I might eventually write a post explaining how he helped me recover from a spell of depression due to a work injury and the subsequent screwing by insurance and my job.

Either way, his hitting has improved during the last few seasons. Almost .300 in the Arizona Fall League (mostly as a DH due to there being 3 catchers, but still getting in 12 games behind the dish), just above .300 in the Dominican Winter League. and .286 last season between 3 levels of the minors. He also has a 45% caught stealing rate for would be baserunners and his defense has been highly regarded by Buck.

If he hadn't gotten hurt earlier and put up a good spring, I really think he could have made the 40 roster (or atleast made the choice between him and Perez close), since they want to keep Sisco in Norfolk to work on things until either post trade deadline, or September.

If he keeps playing and improves this year with a starter spot in Bowie, I wouldn't be shocked to see him on the 40 sooner than later and in Baltimore either next season or in 2019.

I look forward to following his progress.

Would love to hear that story. Honestly, I'd rather they make Sisco into a LFer (ala Jayson Werth) and have Wynns catch

They could move Manny to right.  He's got the arm for it.

I see where you're going with this, but I do think it's a different situation.  Moving Sisco to the OF gives him an extra 30-40 games played or 180-240 extra games in the controlled years.  Or 720-960 PAs.

In Machado, you have a platinum glove winner at an important position.  In Sisco, it's hard to tell if he's going to stick at catcher.

Obviously if he can't stick at catcher you don't put him at catcher.

But if he can stick at catcher you leave him there.

You don't move someone from an area of high defensive value to a place of low defensive value without a very good reason.

I think there are good reasons to move a good bat from catcher.  Just like Surhoff, Werth, Biggio, Schwarber, etc.  Catching is a grind, and if Sisco's power develops, and he gets on base 40% of the time, I'd prefer him playing everyday even if it's in a corner OF spot. (Though I wouldn't be surprised if he has the chops for 3B).

This decision doesn't need to be made this year, obviously.  But I'd track how both guys develop and entertain the idea of moving Sisco.

Because they've shown they aren't very good at that position like Sisco has.

Sisco has shown that he isn't very good at catcher?

Odd I've been hearing about all the progress he's been making, and not just from the O's.

I had no idea you had written him off already.

He's making progress, but that progress from what I've heard doesn't really impress me day to day. He's kind of like Kim in LF. Passible, but not amazing defensively. That and from what I've heard, I like Wynns better.

    • Just did a bit of a walk. Some decently large braches down, one segment of privacy fence missing and standing water on the property in a low spot.
    • Just woke up and I don't hear any wind or rain.
    • Not that I am in any way full agreement, but this is a classic post.  Doesn't Machado play chess?  Maybe we could get some chess boards in the clubhouse and junk all the legos.  Not all great baseball men are John McGraw bad asses.  Some can be Christy Mathewsons as well, I suppose.  Not that I imagine today's young players much resembling McGraw or Mathewson, but they are the first two contrasting old school types that come to mind.  I will say just based on his postseason alone I'd much rather have Tatis over Machado.
    • Well I refuse to believe that only the O's have no players that want extensions.
    • Customer advocate groups have tried for decades to force the cable companies to allow channel by channel (a la carte) subscriptions, but the cable companies fought this because it would result in far less revenue (than forcing us to pay for a hundred channels we don't watch).  The government refused to intervene, so we've been stuck with the existing business model for all this time.  Streaming is forcing the change because streaming -- for now -- is an a la carte model.   MLB's fear must be this: if the regional sports network cable channel model goes away, will most users pay anywhere close to what these channels made as part of a cable bundle for just one streaming channel where all you watch are Orioles games (or maybe Orioles and Nats games -- whatever the case may be)?  So if you pay $100/month for cable with MASN, you are probably watching at least a few other channels too.  But will you pay $15/month (or whatever the price may be) just to watch the Orioles -- even during the months when there is no baseball?  The existing basic cable model has been quite stable because people tend to watch at least 5 or 6 channels.  They're reluctant to cancel their whole cable package just because baseball season is over -- or they've been too busy to watch many games this season.  But with a single streaming channel of just baseball there is bound to be a far more unstable revenue base.  All the streaming channels are already dealing with this problem.  I think MLB is maybe reluctant to go all in on streaming for this reason.  Perhaps they're looking for new different model that could allow them to bundle individual team channels with Netflix, or Prime, or maybe with your cell phone plan or something else.  This could give them some stability, but it could also be a turn off for the more hardcore fans who just want the Orioles and little else.  It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out and if MLB, and the Orioles, will prosper or suffer as a result.
