Yeah, that's why players ask for contracts with opt-outs.   To give them an option to "keep winning".

Nothing all to do with the abillity to get a much bigger contract (see:  Grienke, Zach) if the market has changed in the player's favor.

Did I say anything like that? I said Manny may want to move just to keep winning, I didn't say Manny will want the opt out only because he wants to keep winning.

A new potential wrinkle in this story -- Machado has made some highlight plays but his defense has been bad so far in 2017.  Much of his value comes from his defense at 3B.  There is no way he is worth that mega deal if he loses his edge with the glove.

Just a hiccup or is this a sign of things to come?  Many players lose their defensive edge early in their careers.

That play looked like Manny kind of lolly gagging it. Like when he hits a grounder and doesn't run it out.

3. I would not pay the 396M contract that was mentioned.    Any decline in Machado or serious injury can cripple the franchise for years.

396M is stupid money.  Someone will be stupid enough to pay it, and hopefully it won't be us.  8 other guys have to bat and play the field.  With the market value for even a one-WAR player exceeding 10 million per year and rising, paying that much and locking him down for that length of time is completely insane even for rich teams.  It will be interesting to see what the Yankees do here, considering their recent humiliating experience with ARod toward the end of his contract.  I wouldn't be surprised if the Yanks allow themselves to be outbid for Manny.  Recent indications seem to suggest the Yanks are no longer a team that tries to collect the biggest toys just to prove that they can, like they're actually trying to build a well-rounded team instead of merely being conspicuous consumers who occasionally win a WS.

Nobody is paying close to that amount for Machado.  The best player in the league might, might get that amount, and Machado isn't even close to being the best player in the league.

I'm glad someone else has the courage to say that.

On one hand no one is close to Trout.

On the other hand Machado is in the grouping directly under Trout.

Maybe, or maybe the third tier down.  Machado may have been the best defensive player in the league for a year or two, but he isn't anymore.  Anyway, so what?  Nobody pays huge bucks for defense, and Machado has never broken a .900 OPS, he's never had more than 100 RBIs, and he's only ever led the league in one offensive category -- doubles back in 2013.  He has had two very good years hitting, but people are acting like he's Mike Schmidt or Miguel Cabrera.  We'll know a lot more in a couple months about whether people think he belongs in the category just below Trout or not.

Is Manny hurt. Is the wrist that he bent other his body making a diving stop at third bothering him

He is not hitting a lick and with this start it will be another year that he bats no higher than .280.

Not a 300 million dollar year player if he can't put up a few .950 OPS years

    • Just did a bit of a walk. Some decently large braches down, one segment of privacy fence missing and standing water on the property in a low spot.
    • Just woke up and I don't hear any wind or rain.
    • Not that I am in any way full agreement, but this is a classic post.  Doesn't Machado play chess?  Maybe we could get some chess boards in the clubhouse and junk all the legos.  Not all great baseball men are John McGraw bad asses.  Some can be Christy Mathewsons as well, I suppose.  Not that I imagine today's young players much resembling McGraw or Mathewson, but they are the first two contrasting old school types that come to mind.  I will say just based on his postseason alone I'd much rather have Tatis over Machado.
    • Well I refuse to believe that only the O's have no players that want extensions.
    • Customer advocate groups have tried for decades to force the cable companies to allow channel by channel (a la carte) subscriptions, but the cable companies fought this because it would result in far less revenue (than forcing us to pay for a hundred channels we don't watch).  The government refused to intervene, so we've been stuck with the existing business model for all this time.  Streaming is forcing the change because streaming -- for now -- is an a la carte model.   MLB's fear must be this: if the regional sports network cable channel model goes away, will most users pay anywhere close to what these channels made as part of a cable bundle for just one streaming channel where all you watch are Orioles games (or maybe Orioles and Nats games -- whatever the case may be)?  So if you pay $100/month for cable with MASN, you are probably watching at least a few other channels too.  But will you pay $15/month (or whatever the price may be) just to watch the Orioles -- even during the months when there is no baseball?  The existing basic cable model has been quite stable because people tend to watch at least 5 or 6 channels.  They're reluctant to cancel their whole cable package just because baseball season is over -- or they've been too busy to watch many games this season.  But with a single streaming channel of just baseball there is bound to be a far more unstable revenue base.  All the streaming channels are already dealing with this problem.  I think MLB is maybe reluctant to go all in on streaming for this reason.  Perhaps they're looking for new different model that could allow them to bundle individual team channels with Netflix, or Prime, or maybe with your cell phone plan or something else.  This could give them some stability, but it could also be a turn off for the more hardcore fans who just want the Orioles and little else.  It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out and if MLB, and the Orioles, will prosper or suffer as a result.
