Just a couple of things to discuss...

I'm awaiting 'verification' from Tim Beckham's HS coach Jamie Cassady, concerning Tim's listed height/weight of 6' 2-191. The reason for the call is because Baseball America listed TBeck at 6'-188 in their big 'Top 200' report.

Why is this important? Well, a player's physical projections are tied into his athleticism as well as physical dimensions; height/weight/body type, etc. A 6'2 TBeck is has more projection, especially power, than a 6' even TBeck does.

I don't mean to appear to over-simplify the point, but in my view there is a slight difference in how I project him. I put a call in to BA and await their word on this. I did speak to the awesome staff at Perfect Game, which ESPN has come to an agreement with to be it's leading authority on amateur baseball, and they said they listed TB at 6'2-191 because it was listed in the guide as such at a few showcases.

Anyway, it's just a small thing, but I thought some here may want to know. :)

Why didn't you just call his mother?;)

"Hello?"

"Hi, Mrs. Beckham?"

"Yes, can I help you?"

"Yes ma'am, my name is Greg Pappas, a big fan of your son Tim. Forgive the intrusion, but could you tell me with any certainty how tall your son is?"

"My son's height and weight and every other imaginable measurement has been taken I'm sure... isn't he listed at all the major baseball sites?"

"Yes ma'am, most have him at 6'2-191, however one of the leading amateur baseball sites listed him at merely 6'. So I was a bit concerned."

"Merely? What do you mean 'merely'? What do mean by 'concerned'? You better merely be concerned about yourself, talking about my baby like that... if I ever see you arou..!"

Good points on Tim Beckham. This is a similar reason why so many don't think Gordon Beckham's power projects in pro ball. Gordon Beckham is listed at 6'0" 188 lbs. There are other issues with G-Beck as well, but his height has also been mentioned.

Yeah, and for those posters who will bring up players listed at 6' or shorter with power (Tejada being one), I am aware that there are innumerable players in history who were no taller than 6'. :)

Thanks for looking into this, Greg. Do you feel like he has filled out his frame already? I ask because even if he were 6'0", can't we expect the high school kid to add some size over the next four seasons? I'm asking because maybe in speaking with his coach or some of the other industry guys you've heard something I haven't.

But Gordon is much older and, I believe, closer to filled-out in his frame.

From the video I've see of G. Beckham he looks more on the slight side. I think he has room to put on some more muscle if he so chooses.

Again, the question was is he "closer to filled-out" than Tim is. I think it's pretty safe to say "yes".

Thanks. I haven't received a definitive answer as yet, but to your question...nearly every H.S. kid will 'fill out' or grow a bit as he matures. So, it's hard to say if Beckham will be a 6' -210 SS or a 6' 3 -195 one. I think I'm looking a bit too much into it. :)

    • Starting point has changed.  Given the fact he has approx 1/7th of his season in the books at 1.139, to OPS just .780 for the season, he'd have to drop off to under .730 the rest of the way.  That sort of drop off wouldn't be acceptable to me. I'd like him to OPS .800 the rest of the way for roughly .850 for the season.  The more they use him in a platoon role, the better I think that number might be.
    • Can I ask how you timed it vs the DVR?  Did you use a stopwatch or count click with pause/FF, or something else?
    • I can’t fathom why anyone would want a Tanner Scott return. In 10 innings, he is 0-4 with a 1.78 whip. He was maddening before, and now he’s older. But I wonder if the Red Sox would part with Justin Slaten? He’s been pretty outstanding. Yeah, only 8 innings, but we hired Yohan Ramirez, and he’s been a catastrophe in 10. Yes, I know he’s a rule 5, and the Bosox are in the East. And their pitching is pretty thin, too. But they know they aren’t going anywhere in this division, and they might think getting a good return for a Free Rule 5 guy might be worthwhile.
    • This draft unfolded weirdly.  First with the *nix guys getting taken early and then how no defensive players got taken all draft, and then a bunch of teams reaching for OTs.  I'm pretty happy with how the draft unfolded because I think we got a player that I expected to be gone by the teens or early 20s.  I don't know what we're doing with our OL but hopefully we can maybe trade up from 62 to pick someone up.
    • I have it on dvr and I timed it four times. I got 10.75, 10.80, 10.74, and 10.78.
    • This is exactly what EDC said tonight
    • My guess is more of a safety profile than they preferred. They clearly wanted Wiggins. They ran that pick up fast. And then when you listen to the press conference, the love for the player was obvious.
