A couple of unusual September call ups

On September 1st, rosters expand for all MLB clubs to 40 players. Somehow, the Orioles are still considered an MLB club and fall under that rule.

Since this is a "lost season" anyway, why not call up some players that may not normally come up? See what they can do and, in some cases, give them a "thank you."

Here are a few players that could fit that:

Audrey Perez: The new version of Francisco Pena, Perez has been in the organization for a while. When Caleb got hurt a few seasons ago, Perez had a chance at being called up. However, Perez suffered a knee injury the day before and that led to Pena getting the call. If Caleb is traded on a waiver claim, as some people want him to be, the Orioles will most likely want a 3rd catcher with Sisco and Wynns. Susac is out for the season, Cervenka isn't ready, and Araiza isn't coming near the MLB.

Mike Yastrzemski: Believe it or not, at one time, "Little Yaz" was actually a high prospect for the Orioles. But after some slumping in Norfolk and injuries (along with some "where the hell did they come from!?" for Hays, Mullins, and McKenna,) the shine on Yaz kind of wore off. However, he has been consistent and putting up a good year in Norfolk. If Gentry is moved at the waiver deadline, Yaz could come up as a late inning runner and/or defensive replacement. He can play all 3 outfield spots too.

Drew Dosch: "Oh god, not him again!" Yeah, well...If Nunez gets a shot at 3rd, you might as well see what you have with Dosch too. Neither are going to win Gold Gloves, but might as well see what both can do in the MLB.

Garabez Rosa: "Mr. Baysox" before he was kicked up to Norfolk this year, Rosa has been in the system a LONG time. He even broke all of Caleb's records in Bowie. He can play in most spots, though none are "great." He has quick hands and can adjust with the bat, but this would mainly be his "gold watch" for sticking around. You might not get a chance to do this again moving forward.

This is it as far as position players. There could be a few pitchers to add to this list, but most of them have already been up (Fry, Meisinger) or should be up (Means). The only one that could stand out is Eddie Gamboa, but he has battled injuries this season.

I know, I know, none of these are "move the needle" moves. But there should be roster space (and can be roster space with a few moves on the 40 (Susac, Vielma recalled and moved to 60 day DL)) and none of these guys will be missed if claimed as DFA people right after. None will take away playing time from the newbies. If nothing else, they might make a memory or two.

I don't think Yaz was ever regarded as an actual prospect.

If his last name was Smith no one would know who he is other than you, Luke and Tony.

In 2015 he was the Orioles 9th ranked prospect.

Sorry, but I'd rather drive these guys to the airport than see them playing for the O's.

So you like watching the current crop now? I'm not saying they are the next wave of talent...Just that having them around for a few weeks might be interesting.

I don't consider #9 from 2015 a high prospect.  Or an actual prospect.

I think a lot of time he gets mentioned it's because of his last name.

Could be. But he also would be a younger Gentry and just taking his spot for a few weeks. Not advocating for him to be on the Opening Day roster next year.

I look forward to seeing Mullins, Stewart, Cisco and a few other real prospects coming up in September.

The guys I mentioned wouldn't be taking their spots. They would be in addition to.

Also, fixed the name of one of the guys you can't wait to see.

Because there is not enough room on the 40 man roster to call up the players the O's want to see and these  guys too.

Susac and Vielma are out, out. If they get recalled and 60 day DL'ed, 2 spots open.

If Gentry and Joseph get shipped out, 2 more spots.

Then you have Valencia and Trumbo who could be traded too.

Okay, but you asked me if I was happy watching the current crop. No, I'm not. That's why I listed those guys. The ones who should get playing time. I don't care how many "additional" non-prospect guys they bring up, as long as they never get on the field.

    • At cost considerations there is 2 players i'd rather have listed in that article over Crochet, Helsley leading that. Also Mountcastle to the Reds for a SP makes a lot of sense also.
    • Guilty. I'm working to be intentional to enjoy the day to day of a lot of exciting careers beginning, and not miss the moment as during say Peyton Manning's career in a different chapter of life when assured 14-2 or 13-3 seasons were four months of boredom while you waited to see what the playoff stumble would be this time.    SIGBOT's stuff works in the regular season same as Billy Beane's didn't in the playoffs. I don't follow Over/Unders, but would guess the 2025 Orioles are 1st or 2nd in the AL on early action.    My informal AL power rankings end of 2024: 1. A nonexistent Orioles team with a functional Adley Rutschman 2. Yankees with Soto 3. Tie between actual Orioles with broken Adley and end stage Astros that lost several series to hot Central teams 4. Yankees without Soto 5. Central I'm cheating Cleveland there for a joke, and hope they win, which they are plenty capable of doing.    It is an interesting matchup for the stuff the two teams are good at being very different.
    • I don't see the O's trading Mullins without getting a replacement for him from somewhere.  It's doubtful we have anyone in the minors yet ready to step in for him.  Maybe the same for Urias since he's the perfect backup infielder.  I think Mateo and Mountcastle are more likely to be traded.
    • I was clearly talking about the AL...
    • You mean like how the Os dealt guys like Hays, Stowers and Norby?  Yea, guys who are good depth but guys we can stand to trade are guys I want to trade….and obviously Elias feels similarly. These guys carry value. The level of value depends on the player and you can debate the value of return but yes, you absolutely should trade out of depth and trade guys that perhaps that don’t match your team philosophies.  That’s what teams do.
    • Who knows.  Lots of possibilities. There could be another trade like the Hays trade.  Or maybe you can get a ML ready arm that profiles as a high end reliever. I don’t think that you will get a proven lock down guy but that doesn’t mean you can’t get someone that will end up a big contributor.
