What to do at SS?

With Iglesias gone, the question becomes, where do you go at SS?

Some have mentioned Sanchez but that doesn’t make much sense.  He has won a GG at second and has limited time at SS.  Don’t try to fit a square peg in a round hole.  Keep him where he can thrive.

I don’t think the idea of trading assets for a young Ml ready SS makes sense because the Os have a lot of SS prospects right now, so that’s not really the best allocation of resources. That being said,  one of those guys are likely ready for at least one season, so you do need a stop gap. (Which of course is why Iglesias made a lot of sense)

Urias is a possibility but I don’t think we can believe he hits enough.

I think we can assume that the team won’t be spending any kind of real money on a player either.

What about Addison Russell.  He went to the KBo in 2020 and wasn’t good.  His stats haven’t been great lately but he has upside with both the glove and bat.  Of course, you have his off field issues.  Freddy Galvis is another possibility.

If I had to guess, Galvis represents the most likely option.  I would think he costs at least half of what Iglesias was going to cost.  He’s a vet guy with a lot of experience.  Makes sense to me.

I'll drive the '21 Profar bus.  I relish this concept enough to have looked up that in his Age 25 2018 he at least got about 60 out of 140 starts at SS before having had 2019 Semien and 2020 Tatis pushing him elsewhere.   His arm may be shot, but the Villar Path to FA riches lives here now, unless the Pirates beat us to it.

Agree Galvis likelier and I'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between the '20 and '21 shortstops in that scenario.

I'd consider Andrus for Chris Davis, and Amed Rosario unseated by Gimenez perhaps the true heir to producing Villar-ish gaga roto stats.   Getting Rosario for Kevin Smith might be a fun trick, but I like Smith and doubt Rosario any kind of plus for early Adley teams.

Galvis looks to be a logical option, Profar does, too.  But Profar made 5.7 million last year, I am not sure if he can get that this year but we know thi team doesn't come close to that.

I personally think (I'm not hoping for this) that Richie Martin now has a strong case to make the team as the OD SS.  That wouldn't be good.

I highly doubt that Elias is looking ahead to the FA SS class of '21-22 next winter:  https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/04/mlb-free-agent-shortstops-2021-22-lindor-baez-correa-seager-story.html

Lindor, Baez, Correa, Seager, Story.  Not a snowball chance in hell that we could get one of them as it stands but one can dream.  It's also 12:37 in the morning, I should know better.

The options as I see them:

1. Play someone who is unqualified to be a ML SS (i.e. Valaika, Martin)

2. Sign Freddy Galvis or re-sign Alberto to play SS. (not Profar)

3. Move Sanchez to SS (square peg, round hole as OP said) and let Valaika/Urias/Bannon fight it out for 2B.

Door #2 is clearly the best to me, but it also costs money so we'll see.

Daniel Robertson hasn’t put it together at the plate in the majors. He’s a .280/.370/.417 in the minors! One positive is he does sport a .342 OBP in about 800 MOB at bats so would probably be our best player in that category

Hes still only 23! I’d see if I could get him on a 2 or 3 year deal! Perhaps you could get him at 2-3 million per!

If he’s able to hit around .280 you’d have a real nice trade chip but he’s young enough to be part of the future.

Need more Nunez?

Not in the field, no.  Just a lot less Valaika and no Sanchez at SS.

Bannon at third is ok with me.  Rather him at second but I want the defense of Sanchez there instead.  I don’t mind if you keep Ruiz as a platoon guy but Bannon being your regular at third is ok with me in the sense of what this cheap team is doing.

I would still rather make a trade for a blocked ML ready third baseman though.

Valaika's best defensive position is 2B (.995 fielding in 330 innings) and he's no slouch with the bat

Sanchez doesn't have enough experience to draw conclusions with at SS,  but is generally considered a + defender... and club management mentioned him at SS.

Bannon 3B, Sanchez SS, Valaika 2B is what I'd go with barring an acquisition (which was what I said initially)
