Did you ever see Ortiz in a rage destroy a phone.  Why do you think that happened?

Two guys you never wanted to get angry on the baseball field.   Frank and Bob Gibson.   Frank definitely had another gear and Gibson would take your head off and you knew he meant it.

Gibson had 24 homer and 144 RBI in his career.   He also hit 102 batters in 17 years.   Jim Palmer, who no one ever accused of being mean, hit 38 in 19 years.

I don't think players feared Gibson's hitting as much as his pitching.

Frank

Frank was great in all situations, clutch or not.  .926 OPS overall, .920 in high leverage, .917 late & close.  So, it’s not that be ramped it up in the clutch, he was just great all the time.

Eddie was not quite the hitter Frank was, in any situation, but he did ramp things up in the clutch vs. overall.  .836 OPS overall, .872 in high leverage, .865 late & close.   And famously, 1.127 with the bases loaded.  (Frank was at .808.)

Frank is a HOF because he did raise to the challenge.   Knock him down and he would hit a homer on you.
