Why is it that the Orioles have off the day after the home opener so often?

After a quick check, going back 10 years the Orioles have had the next day off after the home opener something like 8/10 times. And if I am remembering correctly it has been that way since at least the 90's. Is there a specific reason for this? It doesn't seem that other teams get this day off nearly as often as the Orioles, but I have not actually checked to verify this.

Just a curiosity of mine

In cities that are colder and no dome or retractable roof they usually give the next day off in case if cold, rain or even snow. I think one year they did try to get most games in warmer weather and domes and retractable roofs.

On it's face that makes sense, but I don't think Boston or New York get the day off after their home opener nearly as often. In recent years when the Orioles have opened in those cities they were generally all straight 3 day/game series. I'd have to actually look to be sure, though.

This year both the Yankees and Red Sox both have the day off after their home openers Both also have the  day off after the Orioles and Tigers home openers. What has changed it seems is opening on a Thursday and getting Friday off. In the past it seemed most teams opened on a Monday. I remember I was at one game at Camden Yards when ESPN did the one Sunday night game opener. I think it was really cold that night.

I think you are wrong.   We open in Boston next Thursday and have next Friday off.

Everyone in MLB opens next Thursday.  And there are only 5 games scheduled next Friday:  in Miami, Houston, Seattle, San Diego, and Los Angeles   Three domes/retractable domes and two SoCal locations where rain is unlikely.

Nearly every team that is not in a dome or southern California location gets an open day after the home opener.   It is not unique to the Orioles nor is it more prevalent wit us than with any other outdoor non-SoCal team.

This is the reason for sure. Its not just the Orioles, it's most non warm weather cities.

The Orioles have habitually won on Opening Day...at least in my lifetime.......so I thought that day off after Opening Day was to give the players time to come to the realization that they just aren't going to win many more games the rest of the year.  But, the weather factor makes sense too  🙂

I am in fact wrong. Went back and checked the Yankees schedule over the past 10 years. They have made use of that make up day several times in just the past 5 years alone.

And if they didn't last year, it could be a byproduct of the lockout.   The first week of the season was postponed and the schedule picked up a week into the original schedule.   So last year the Orioles "home opener" was a Monday with Milwaukee with no off day the next day, but that was only because it was not going to be the home opener on the original schedule.   Same could be true of any team that didn't have the off day in 2022; you'd have to find a copy of the original pre-lockout schedule to see if they were supposed to.
